I've found that it varies from week to week, but I really like the recaps that the Onion AV club is doing. Here's the most recent one. It's a good way to keep tabs on podcasts that you don't listen to often, or to find some new ones you haven't heard yet. It's where I found Julie Klausner's "How Was Your Week?", which I like but won't be everyone's cup of tea.

I've started listening to the Slashfilm Filmcast podcast. Mostly about movies with some TV stuff, but not really in the comedy category. I'm listening to episodes from about a year ago so that I'm hearing about movies I've already seen. They save all the spoilers for the ends of the episodes, so if you're listening to a new one you can stop when they warn you. I'm finding increasingly that I prefer a well-produced podcast more than the actual subject material. I don't really care about sports, but I like Sklarboro Country because they run a tight program and keep it interesting. With the Filmcast, for interest, they keep imdb open to look up an actor or director if someone can't remember who it is. (I can't stand the shows where two or three people argue about something stupid, like "The capital of Japan is Beijing." "No it's not, the capital is Bangkok. It's where all the brothels are." And they go back and forth for fifteen minutes, and the next week someone apologizes and says that it's Tokyo. Kevin Smith is pretty awful about this, with his confusion over Helen Keller and Anne Frank, and estimating that the population of the US is about 40 million people, and other weird stuff.

Listened to the Brian Callen episode of Rogan Exp, it wasn't as bad as it was made out to be. Just usual Rogan being questionable, which I enjoy.

Also, a question: My office blocks anything off of libsyn, so I can't stream about 95% of podcasts. Is there an alternative, say, web-based streamer I could use that would pipe in my libsyn rss's to me so I don't have to access them directly? Otherwise, any ideas on how I can get around the libsyn block on those days I invariably forget to bring/refill my ipod with new shows and help make my soul-crushingly dull job a tad more bearable?

I'm pretty sure if you subscribe to them through Google Reader you can play it through the Reader itself, that should allow you to stream without being blocked.

I don't think I could number them in order but besides the ones most commonly mentioned in this thread (all of Earwolf, Doug Loves Movies, Pod F Tompkast), I like Smartest Man in the World and Judge John Hodgman. I also found You Look Nice Today funny but I need to listen to more episodes.

As of late I've been heavily enjoying The Bugle. Probably the best episode to start with is 99A which is a best of the first 99 episodes. You can find it at http://gamesplusone.com/thebugle/

Can someone explain Tig Notaro to me or maybe point me to something where she's actually funny?

Is it supposed to be an anti-comedy thing where it's funny because she's never funny?

In her latest CDR appearance she not only did her normal monotone thing, but the only time you really seem to get anything out of her is when she's trying to step on someone else's bits. I don't care if chupacabra mispronounced a word Ms. Notaro, stop getting in the way of my laughs!
Perhaps the most basic principle of humor is the alteration of expectation. A clear example of doing that is defying the understood rules of an improv game by, eg, 'stepping on someone's bit'.

Do you find it funny when Scott tries to throw Andy Daly off his game by grilling him about timelines and inconsequential details?

I think Tig live/stand-up is awesome. She's incredibly funny live and in-person. Cannot stand her on podcasts. I tried Prof. Blastoff and gave up after 15 minutes. But if you get a chance to see her live, go for it.

Tig Notaro seems like the comedy equivalent of cilantro. There's some sort of genetic marker that makes you love her or hate her, but there's no in between. It's like how I feel about Tim & Eric. I can accept that many people find them hilarious, and I don't argue with them, but I simply don't get it at all.

On a vaguely related note, while I love WTF with Marc Maron, I'm not a big fan of his standup. I've listened to a few of the albums, and his sadness/bitterness thing works better in the format of his podcast rather than on stage. You start feeling sorry for him at points while the crowd is letting out bits of nervous laughter.

I really love "How Was Your Week?" Julie Klausner is one of the two people I enjoy just bullshitting into the mic (Paul F. Tompkins is the other one). Her interview with Joan Rivers was amazing and serves as a good intro into the kind of stuff on the show (Jews, cats, Bravo television).

I think thats different. Scott knows Andy is a master improvisor so he grills him on details to try to gently caress him up. The episode with Jeff Garlin was an amazing improv gauntlet for Andy Daly. Tig stepping on peoples jokes come off as her being a jerk. I've also listened to her on other podcasts and she just doesn't come off as funny. Obviously the other comedians like her but I don't see it.

For anyone that's interested, Klausner plays Neko Case in The New Pornographers video for Moves. The video was directed by Tom Scharpling, host of The Best Show podcast, and it features lots of comedians or comic actors playing roles throughout, including Todd Barry, Don Glover, and many others.

Seconding the love for this podcast, it's pretty drat tight in terms of comedy per minute, and makes me wonder why I haven't seen Klausner in more things.

Ya know I haven't listened to Doug Loves Movies in a while. I think I figured out recently that most of the show is just the Len Maltin game, the necessary explanation of its rules, and the game itself isn't really that fun or interesting. I'm not sure why the game is such a big hit. I'll listen if a Pardo or Tompkins or whoever is on, but any new guests I skip right over.

DLM is really hurt by the fact it has a time limit and has to end for the UCB show to start. The Len Maltin game can be fun, but it's painful how they cram it in sometimes especially when the guests have no interest in playing/learning how to play.

I love listening to the Len Malton game, but then on episodes like the most recent one, where assholes won't SHUT THE gently caress UP *cough cough adam corolla* just piss me off as much as I imagine it pisses off Doug. I'd like to see an entire seperate podcase just for the Len Malton game, where he can bring in guests who really WANT to play and are good at it and understand how the game works, and maybe mix it in with some audience members playing.

I find it far more annoying (although it's not his fault) that Doug rushes rushes rushes everyone through the first part of the podcast and then rushes rushes rushes everyone through the game. He's had to cut off some great discussions.

I also really like the old version of the game, where Doug just picks a random movie and starts naming names till someone yells out the correct answer. It seems far more pure and also doesn't take an hour to set up.

The Len Maltin game sounds good in concept, but is actually pretty lovely in execution. What makes it fun is the interactions with the guests. Like Michael Rooker not even being able to remember any movie that he was in during the 80s. Bald Bryan is a prime example of someone who would mop the floor if given the chance, but gets screwed out by the other players trying to one up his over zealous bids.

I like Carolla but hate him on DLM because of his constant talking. Jerry O'connell is a good guest but hardly was able to get a word in because of Carolla. The same stuff happened with the other guests in the episodes with Jeff Garlin and Rainn Wilson.

I am glad that he is going to do the next tournament of champions as a bracket system. He had so many guests in the last one that it was hard to track who was talking, not enough mics, and fan favorites getting the boot too quick.

I wonder why Pang wasn't going to show anymore. He and Roosie were mentioned almost every week there for awhile.

The Len Maltin game during the live episodes is almost always more fun to listen too. I feel like trying to cram the game into 15-20 mins on the normal episodes really hurts it overall because they have to actually push through and play the game. Listening to the guests struggle with answers and riff in between is really what makes the game work for me. He should also really keep the number of guests down, not hearing certain guests because they just don't have a mic sucks and makes everything hard to follow.

Carolla's in the Kevin Smith territory for me. I can't claim he's talentless or unfunny, but he has a limited schtick and a finite number of entertaining stories, and between loveline, the man show, and the few pre-morning-zoo eps of his podcast I caught, I've heard it all five times over. He has nothing new or surprising to bring to the table.

I don't much like Carolla for a lot of reasons, but I can agree with this, when it was just him hanging out with another person and chatting you could easily ignore his random "AND THE FUCKIN WOMEN TRYIN TO TURN US ALL INTO QUEERS" and poo poo, but now that he is a ~radio guy~ he feels he has to turn that poo poo up to 11 and now he's an insufferable douche.

Carolla has a bad habit of not letting the guest speak, and constantly trying to turn the conversation back to one of his rants or stories about "swinging a hammer". He's got the clout to get some interesting people, but listeners already know his entire life story backwards and forwards. Let the guests talk, and learn to ask questions.

One of the strangest examples of this was when he had George Takei on, and Takei was telling the story of being put into an internment camp as a young boy during WWII. Carolla at one point interrupted him by trying to compare the internment of the Japanese to his recent firing from the radio show, his primary rant at the time. Takei was one of the few guests to ever call him on this BS, and said, "Adam, it's really not the same thing."
