I actually believe when people think of Iceland they will always think of it first as a frozen processed foods super market and not a small glacial Island populated by Norwegian and Gaelic peoples at the edge of the European continent.

I think the BBC should buy the idea to the show, had all the services and offices what left? dont think we had a petrol station yet. Only saw two episodes before I switched over for a movie I was waiting for and honestly I wouldn't mind seeing more, The guy recovering from a stroke and being takled to the ground was just Office cringe worthy, hell the manager is a bit like David Brent but more of a gently caress up. I think it could work well.

Thought there was a lot that didn't work this week to be honest, and I love Stewart Lee. Last week was up there with the best stuff I've ever seen him do, but his persona didn't fit with the (may as well spoiler it) "come and stay" bits very well and I'd seen the otters bit before so it didn't have the same effect. Sketch was actually great though, best Comedy Vehicle one by a mile. The pearly king outfit with the London postcodes was a touch of genius.

This was the first episode I have seen, and while I like some of Lee's material (and admittedly I've not seen that much), I wasn't really feeling this. Besides the Tramadol Nights dig, "bring coke" and "that's just precipitation" I don't think I laughed at all.

hey deadhead - take a bite of peach.
I love how Stewart Lee fans tend to become blinded and overly worthy due to their own superior comedic tastes and opinions. I know that I instantly dismiss anyone who has ever clapped eyes on Avid Merrion as an insignificant prole. Think I might move on to looking down my nose at Adam and Joe, casting them off as prosaic, banal, time-sinks of no value.

I missed Comedy Vehicle last night, went to see Attack the Block last night. It's very good. There were a gently caress-lot of 16-year old twats in the cinema, waggling their iPhones and talking about Pokemon or whatever. Last time I go at 7.30 on an Orange Wednesday.

This is a silly post with little news value.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/may/11/channel-4-live-drug-taking posted:

Channel 4 is planning to air live footage of people taking class A drugs and alcohol to show their effects on the body as part of a drive to "bring a sense of mischief" back to the broadcaster.

Science series Drugs Live will take place under strict clinical conditions, with programme makers working "closely with leading research institutes from around the world to bring much-needed clarity to a social issue often mired in controversy or confusion", according to Channel 4.

"The issue of class A drugs is something that I think is incredibly important and an area of social policy that Channel 4 can be on the front foot about and provide some interesting and useful data," said Jay Hunt, Channel 4's chief creative officer.

Hunt added you "can legally test class A drugs on an individual" but warned there were "huge duty of care and legal issues" surrounding the show.

"It will involve people taking drugs in a clinical environment live on TV," she said.

The broadcaster is billing the four-parter as a "radical new science series", which aims to examine "the claims and counterclaims made about the effects of recreational drugs by testing them on live television".

"Under strict medical supervision and in a controlled clinical environment, individuals will be filmed as they use different substances. Their physical and psychological effects will be monitored, as will their social interaction with others as the drugs enter their systems," Channel 4 said.

Drugs Live is being made by independent producer Renegade Pictures, with Alan Hayling executive producing.

"This subject is fraught with controversy and confusion – this series will provide viewers with unmediated access to a live drug trial. Viewers will be able to see for themselves the actual effects the drugs have in scientific detail. We will work closely with the leading research institutes from across the world. The aim is to bring new clarity to the facts of illegal drug use," said David Glover, specialist factual commissioning editor and the Channel 4 executive responsible for the show.

Drugs Live is one of a number of new commissions unveiled on Wednesday by Hunt, in her first major announcement about programming strategy since joining the broadcaster in January.

"I believe Channel 4's future lies in pieces that take risks. Risks on new talent, risks on difficult subject areas, risks with style and execution. It's more important than ever that Channel 4 is prepared to challenge the status quo, to provoke debate and, above all, to be brave," Hunt said.

It's like there is an office in C4 with whiteboard dedicated to brainstorming ideas to piss of the Mail. It must be a wonderful place.

I agree, there seems to be a a sense of smug, self-superiority that Stewert Lee gives off, not unintentionally I would guess and it certainly seems to have rubbed off on his fans. I thought twice about posting my thoughts on the show because I couldn't be hosed with the inevitable 'hurrr, go watch Peter Kay, Del Boy, Michael McIntyre...' reponses.

I got the impression that the material he did on last night's show would have been a lot funnier if you had actually been in the audience. The humour was meant to come from the excruciating repetition of the same material and that doesn't really come across very well when the audience are watching at a remove. It kinda takes the material out of its natural context a wee bit.

Particularly it's hard to see how the section where he scrutinised his own act with an imaginary person on the phone could translate well on screen. He even acknowledged this himself during the performance.

From what I seen last night I can tell he is a bit of a craftsman and is dedicated to his chosen art form, it was almost a kind of comedy minimalism. I can appreciate what he was doing. It's just that it wasn't that funny...

Is it possible to like Stewart Lee and Keith Lemon or do you have to choose? Because I like comedy vehicle and I like celebrity juice, what am I to do?

Also how can I sign up for that channel 4 show, it seems like a good way to take drugs without all the shame, and you probably get a team of doctors feeding you morphine for the comedown afterwards. And all for science!

I think a lot of Stewart Lee's stuff is really good, but I'm not gonna pretend that I don't get frustrated by his "talking really slowly" thing. I'm not convinced that it adds the kind of profundity he thinks it does, as if his style of delivery is going to transform a comedy act into some kind of aesthetic experience.

The material is great, but it's not that mind-blowing that I need 10 seconds of silence between each sentence to imbibe its complex meaning or whatever.

90s Comedian is one of my favourite ever stand-up performances for the way the entire set is so carefully constructed, with like 10 different callbacks occurring at the end along with the amazing vomiting into the gaping anus of christ routine. 41st Best Standup is also excellent.

After the first series of comedy vehicle I was kind of under the impression that his stuff must only work well in a fleshed-out 60 minute performance, but then I didn't really like If You Prefer A Milder Comedian either. I think I laughed about 3 times.

Anyway if you're like me and aren't finding a lot of Lee's recent work funny then I urge you to check out some of his older material if you haven't already.

I'm not quite sure why someone wouldn't love "If You Prefer A Milder Comedian". The last 20 minutes when he gets incredibly angry, runs off shouting into the audience and then later reveals that the entire tirade is mostly because of a small grammatical error is pure gold. Then we get "Galway Girl". I wasn't expecting much after how hit and miss the first series of Comedy Vehicle was, but I was blown away by that.

That said last nights episode was underwhelming, especially considering how amazing last weeks one was.

I laughed, several times. I don't mind the smugness and such as I see it as part of the character/him, joking about the smugness that he could be criticized for. It's like a self-aware feedback loop. Maybe. Someone posted this article the other day which I found gave me a better insight into his brain dome

http://www.stewartlee.co.uk/press/writtenformoney/2011-04-00-financial_times-slow_comedy.htm

Sometimes I wonder if I am laughing as I find it funny or if I am aware that I'm not laughing and want to seem in on the joke, even though I watch it alone. It's times like that I dislike the self-awareness as it takes me out of it a little when I start to question the concept behind stand-up comedy and the differences between live and televised comedy. But then, maybe that's what the pauses are for.

Crozier's revenge! Although yes as others have said, Taggart is produced by STV, all ITV have done is stop paying their share because they don't want it any more.

Media Guardian posted:

An STV spokesperson said: "STV is exploring a range of options for Taggart with number of broadcasters. We are committed to the brand and recognise the continuing popularity of this long-running series."

A spokesman for Taggart's international distributor, DRG, added: "Taggart is a hugely popular series internationally. For example, it is aired across three different TV channels in Australia and, the most recent seasons have achieved their best reception yet. It's our shared ambition to return Taggart to UK screens and we can confirm we're currently working closely with STV as we explore options to achieve this."
