I made an Inkscape drawing of a membrane keypad, including graphics and cutouts. I need to create a dimensioned drawing, showing locations of holes and stuff like that. Is it possible to dimension this automatically (as in, I don't have to calculate distances) in Inkscape? Or maybe I could import it into another program and draw dimensions there, assuming the units convert properly. Any ideas?

If you can get your hands on a copy of Bradbury's Anatomy and Construction of the Human Figure, it's got some decent full-colour references that breaks anatomy down into skeleton, musculature, etc. It's great for understanding not just how things look, but how they function Now here's my question for any fellow designers. Is there a decent PC equivalent of Font Book? I've got buttloads of fonts, and while I can put most of them to occasional use, there's a handful that I use almost always. It'd be nice to keep those organized somehow, rather than just writing their names down on a Post-It note or relying on my shoddy memory.

So I know that you aren't supposed to paint acrylic over oil however I have some canvases with low oil oil-paintings on them (mostly gamsol and straight paint) that have been sitting for about 3 years. My question is if it's okay to reuse these canvases by priming over them and using acrylic.

The reason people talk about not painting acry over oil is because they'll crack and deteriorate over time, but being frank, if you have to ask about it, you're not selling paintings for thousands of dollars, so who cares? just re prime it and go to town, and see what happens. But really, re-stretching a canvas takes like 20 minutes. So you could also do that, and canvas is cheap.

Yeah I know that you're supposed to put lean over fat so things don't dry wonky and you get cracks but these paintings are pretty thin and haven't been touched in years. Thank you for your input. Also apologies for making a thread with this exact question, I knew there was a mega-thread I just couldn't find it.

Where's a good place online to get things (business cards, namely) printed? I'm looking for an affordable place that also offers a choice of paper stock, and finishing options such as spot varnish or die cutting. Are things like this better (more cheaply) done through a local print shop?

I've been using them since around 2003 and the only complaint I would have is that sometimes their yellows (in large fields of yellow) come out tinged green but that's kind of life when you deal with gangpress printers. Drop the extra bucks for a proof.

I'm hoping this is the place to ask - if not then please point me in the right direction. I'm looking for the name of a contemporary painter. I'm fairly sure that he is American and his specialty seems to be clinical, minimalist depictions of empty public spaces. Shopping malls, parking lots etc. I remember seeing a brochure for one of his exhibitions last year and really liking his stuff. I looked up his homepage and everything but now, several months later I've forgotten his name. ... any takers?

Try save for web&devices as a gif with a very limited custom palette. Might be good to also change it to greyscale before you go mess with the palette, but not sure about that.

Not sure if this is worth it's own post for discussion, so I'll ask here first. What can you all tell me about shared creative workspaces? My ultimate goal is to have a warehouse space to hold photo shoots, but would other artists be interested in sharing the space for painting or something else? Are there easy ways of doing this? Is this a terrible idea? I'd like to be able to create a place where bands could play, people could have fashion shows, I could do photo shoots, rent out darkroom time, ect.

Pie in the Sky posted:Anyone have any ideas how to do this effect? Figured it out! For anyone curious: In photoshop, take the image you want and reduce the resolution/image size to a smaller level. Go to Image > Mode > Indexed Color... Reduce the number of Colors to around 4-7, then select Custom... in the Forced drop down menu. Pick some interesting colors. Make sure some are dark, some are mid-toned, and some are light. Pick Diffusion from the Dither pull down, and fiddle around with the amount until it looks right. I've found anywhere from 10-70% gives the best results. Voila!

Typography fans: Is there a way to measure font size from images? I've tried Googling it, but I just get results like "install this applet with so-and-so code" or "pick a font that looks kinda like it and change the size until they seem to match." Is there a more precise or easy way to do this? I'd like to be able to size fonts from physical print as well as digital images. Thanks.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Point_%28typography%29 I think postscript uses the measurement of 72 points to the inch, so you can always measure the physical size of the printed type and divide by 72 to get an approximate point size. It'll vary a bit from font to font but not that much.

Does anyone have experience with using the tile option in illustrator cs5? I am trying to print an image across multiple 8.5x11 sheets of paper, and it works well whenever I select the "Tile: Imageable areas". However, I would like a little bit of overlap since when I trim off the page borders to reconstruct the big picture, I sometimes don't have 100% perfect cuts and it looks a little funny. However, when I select the "Tile: Full Pages" option, the overlap box becomes available to use, but when I print out the pages don't line up because it looks like the print would go to the edge of the paper if it could, but the printer can't print there so there is either a white gap or misaligned big picture. What am I doing wrong?

In Photoshop CS2, is there anyway to constrain the movement while in the Color Picker? I know holding <shift> will make it so you can only move straight up/down/angled with other tools and I'd like to do the same thing in the color picker.

The best way I can think of is to use the numbers in the HSB values instead of actually moving the target with your cursor. With the S (saturation) field selected, you can use your keyboard up and down arrow keys to make the number go up and down, thus making your target go left and right on the color picker. Likewise, up and down in the B (brightness) field makes it go straight up or down. Holding down shift when you hit an arrow key makes it go in steps of 10 units instead of 1.
