Just started reading Vinland Saga. So far ('bout halfway through Ch.1? The kid and Hordaland have just met) it seems like the standard seinen "go on globe-trekking quest for vengeance" plotline, just with a crispy crunchy Viking exterior. But I like Vikings and Norse mythos, so I'll keep on it. Pretty badass imagery, too. Goes down great with some Tyr or Amon Amarth in the background.

If you are finding it badss now, I can't wait for your reaction when you get to the current arc. Absolutely stunning action scenes, and visceral, brutal violence to wheat far exceeding the early chapters when the mangaka was just finding his feet.

Arrrg that was way too short. How old is Thorfinn now? Like 20 or something? It's hard to be serious about the old man's death when he literally died mid rake.

Well that guy's never coming back.

I'm sure our characters are going to leave the farm one way or another soon, but if they were really going to get their freedom from their benevolent master for their hard work, they'd just get it. They wouldn't be told about it and given time to consider how that would play out if it was actually going to happen that way.

Yeah, unless he plans to play with it a little to subvert the trope, that guy is fuckin dead. Not to mention, the old man and the master are both going to be gone it looks like, so maybe a less kind slave owner will take over..?

The master's cruel elder son who just came back from the war, most likely. The one who wanted to cut off the kid's arm for stealing food from their farm.

I just know this is going to happen, especially considering how cute this chapter was -- the obvious calm before a storm. Still, it was so heartwarming to see these guys happy for 20 pages.

So the guy's awesome, but lays on the killing thing a Bit Too Much. His motivations for killing are totally understandable, so he's more than sympathetic enough to get a solid redemption story, though this maga's cool enough that he could stay as he is and not need to be explicitly condemned by the story structure.

Seems like perfect comrade material. Einar on the one hand offering a more moderate civilian perspective, and this guy on the other hand offering a relatively justifiable extremely bloodthirsty perspective.

Even if he's just a one story arc character he's definitely going to test Thorfinn's new found pacifism. The guy was in the exact same situation as Thorfinn and came up with a totally different way of dealing with it. There's going to have to be a confrontation of some sort eventually.

Yeah, I was thinking this too. I fear for any character in this story who talks about being happy and isn't also busy killing things. Especially if there is an unstable guy with a sword introduced at the same time.

Yeah this guy isn't really companion material, I think he'll be an antagonist seeing as the guy in charge of making sure he doesn't kill everyone is buds with our farmer-heroes now.

That has to include Thorfinn and Einar as well, you realise. They too were smiling and laughing throughout this chapter. But I agree with you that Arneis is the one most likely to end up dead by the end of the arc.

I fear for Einar every single chapter. I know it might not be soon, but I know he can die, and I know that because that would have such a profound impact on both Thorfinn and the reader, it's a real danger.

This manga has managed to persuade me that he doesn't have plot armor, and it scares the heck out of me. I just love that guy, and the thought of him dying is just :ohdear:.

Lately it's been pretty easy to see him being a longtime companion, so it's not as bad as it has been, but if ever the plot calls for Thorfinn's faith in the moderate path to be shaken, Einar's life is just hanging there by a thread.

Arneis was the one that mentioned it, though, and she was the main focus of that part of the chapter. But I see your point. We are clearly being lead to believe that something bad is going to happen to our protagonists. The only person with plot armor is Thorfinn.

I think that if anyone kills Arneis they most likely would also have to kill Einar.

My guess is that who exactly the mysterious stranger is hunting down will define whether he will turn out to be an enemy or companion. As far as general disaster is concerned I still think it's more likely to be due to the landholder's overambition as foreshadowed than due to the stranger.

As much as I am hoping otherwise I still can't see the Arneis and Einar thing having a happy ending.

Not as far as I know, but I haven't read a whole lot on the matter (just Wikipedia and some other stuff).

Interestingly, there's a famous sculpture of Thorfinn Karlsefni (in Philadelphia, for some reason) that was sculpted by someone named Einar Jonsson.

The answer is obvious. Einar is the Highlander, built that statue and then had plastic surgery to become Japanese so he could tell his life story through manga, and the lessons him and his best friend learned through life.

I've been reading Vinland Saga, and it's great so far. The farm arc is pretty good so far, but I want it to be gory again! Big battles are much more exciting than boring days on a farm, you know? The author's great at pulling off big exciting battles, so he should try to work them back into the story again. (But that's just me!)

So we're once again having image breaking issues in the OP. I rehosted what was left on my own hosting and replaced other pics from their source, but some I forget what the images were. You should see that there's a missing Vinland Saga pic and I have no idea. Also, could use some images for Cesare and Emma, as well as additional manga for it.

Trying to round out this OP since it tends to be one of my fave threads to link to people since it's so quality packed.

Also, didn't see anyone mention that a new Historie dropped

Dad of Frankenstein

Here are some Cesare pictures. I dunnnoooooooooo if they are good.

As for other manga... There is Joan, which I read a loooooong time ago and now I can't find a good version of online, but I think it fits in. It's the story of this girl who sort of relives the journey or Joan of Arc ten years after the fact. Memory is a bit hazy. I think the same guy also made a manga about Jesus, but I can't find that, either. :(

The only other things I can think of don't really seem to match in tone. Like The Ravages of Time, or The Rose of Versailles. There's like a billion god drat things if you start including three kingdoms stuff and shojo, but most of it is kind of bad. (those two are ok)

Of course there's no good reason to kick asses given the situation. Thorfinn and Einar want to be free, and kicking livestock would effectively kill their chances of making that goal.
