Argh! For the past couple of days my A4 was having a tough time starting, and at lunchtime today it just gave up. Fortunately this happened at the dealership where I was making an appointment to have that looked at (good thing I followed my instincts!) but it's still a bother.

Essentially, Wednesday morning when I started the car I was getting the same kind of "slow start" that you get if you forgot to turn off your headlights, or if you car is stored outside in -20 degree weather for a couple of weeks. There was no apparent cause for this, it's getting to summer here and the car had been in the indoor parking garage for a week and a half. I think nothing of it, maybe the charge on the battery is getting weak, whatever. When it did it again as I left the office I knew there was probably more of an issue as my commute should have been long enough to fully recharge it. It was getting worse this morning, but I still got it started, and a little bit worse at lunch. As soon as the engine got started everything was completely normal, the only abnormal thing was the start.

Now in the dealer's parking lot I got only one "rollover" and no start at all, and an ominous beep that seemed to come not from the dash (like most beeps) but from somewhere at the rear passenger's side  (mind you I have had a flu recently so my ears are a bit waxy). Well, at least it was at the right place for something like that to happen. This would have been a pain in the arse to deal with in the garage.

Thing is, I don't think it's the battery. I've had a battery go dead before (from the faulty brake sensor issue I mentioned here at length) and nothing electrical worked at all, but this time the radio was coming on, and the central locking still worked. It seems like more of an issue with some part of the starter. This is a B7 A4 with the 2.0T engine.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Yeah, it's the battery. VAG starters seem to draw a lot - when the battery isn't tip-top you can get a slow or weak crank pretty easily. With the engine running put a volt meter on the battery and see what the voltage is. If it's 12.9 V or less then you've got a charging system problem but I'm betting on a weak battery.

At what point do I cancel my order from ECS Tuning?....

I put in an order: 4/7/2011

Expected Ship Date was: 5/13/2011

It still says "Product Inbound", even though when I originally ordered it said all items were in stock. I had emailed someone about it, and he said that it's because of the EuroJet PCV kit or something... that they are slow at getting it to them, but to me it seems a bit ridiculous to have been waiting for almost a month and half.

Well, I happened to get another email today:

"I am writing to inform you that there has been a slight delay in receiving some of the items for your order. As of the current time, we are expecting them to arrive on 6.10.11.

Here at ECS Tuning, we work hard to make sure that we get your items to you in a timely manner. We are however at the mercy of our manufacturers and suppliers of the items. Please rest assured that your items are on order and as soon as our suppliers have them, we will ship them out to you as soon as possible."

So I ordered early April, and am told they are expecting them to arrive June 10th... Honestly, I don't know if I can wait that long. Isn't that kind of ridiculous to ask of a customer? I'm not ordering like a $20 part either, I ordered $600 worth of parts...

Is it ridiculous? We don't know... what parts did you order? If it was $600 worth of spark plugs, water pumps and tune up parts, then yeah. If it was $600 worth of some rare parts imported from Germany with a lead time and delays, then no.

Quick question before I do something silly...

I recently bought a vanity Euro plate for my B7 A4. My province doesn't require a front license plate so obviously I intent to put the plate there. It came with a "universal" mounting frame that looks something like this:

Obviously I'd have to remove the grille cover to be able to install the plate. At the same time I know that Audi also makes a grille cover that's made to house the plate, but ECS will only have that in stock in mid-summer. So before I go about removing the existing grille cover and probably break a plastic clip or three, would it be sufficient to use the "universal" frame or is the Audi grille cover really necessary if it's going to look good?

edit, in case someone else wants to do this: I actually need two parts, and they don't seem to be available from anywhere at the moment :(

I have that universal holder and its not that great, its kinda floppy and the ends don't follow the contour of the bumper. Might be worth the wait for the right bracket and I plan on getting the euro bumper cover soon for mine.

My car simply turned itself off at a stoplight yesterday. 2004 A6 3.0 Quattro with 99K miles. No funny noises, warning lights, or indication that anything was wrong. It was running fine when the engine just shut down. It has about 1/4 tank of gas in it. I put it into park and it started again as normal.

Most likely a bad ignition switch - I've done a few for that complaint. Did any of the lights stay on in the cluster when the car shut down?

Its pretty much the same for every bearing. You should be able to do it except that the races have to be pressed in (and out if you are reusing the drum). To set the pre-load all you have to do is tighten the nut enough (not very tight) to make sure the bearings are set in the races and then loosen it ever so slightly until you can just move the washer around with a screw driver.

Is it the bearings on both sides? If its just 1 side, it might be a bent rim. My dad trashed the bearings on both front and back on the passenger side from driving around on a warped wheel.

Remove the caps on the wiper arm nuts if you haven't already. I usually take the 13 mm nuts completely off, spray a little penetrant on the shaft and then rock the wiper arm off the shaft. Don't be afraid to use some muscle - there'll be some corrosion on the splines that you'll have to overcome. You can also try putting the nut back on and tightening it down very tightly - that can help break down the rust that's keeping it on there.

I'm growing a little suspicious of my dealership's service... I had a full inspection done last week and as I was setting off on a road trip yesterday my "check engine" light came on. Fortunately I have a bluetooth OBD connector so I was able to see what the fault was (P0299, loss of pressure in the turbocharger) and determine that it was still safe to go. Is this error common in cases of diverter valve failure? I hear it's about the most common problem for the 2.0T engine.
