There's some cool stuff coming out this week, firstly there's a new Renegade Hardware EP for first time in ages.

Secondly there's this from ASC (sorry no youtubes), which i believe is the new type of dnb people are calling autonomic; http://www.chemical-records.co.uk/sc/servlet/Info?Track=EXIT029

It's awesome the best release i've heard with this type of sound.

Actually looking at his video again for the first time in like 2-3 years it's actually a Ferrari 348. I just remember it was a dark green(but looking again maybe black? Christ my eyes are shite) wedge shape sportscar so my mind just went to Lotus originally. Either way that's just to make you jealous. Don't know if it was actually his or whatever, but possibly. Whatever way pretty impressive.

Man they made a lot of money in those days, even just on record sales alone. You'll be looking at probably what? Maybe 10-15 thousand units at least in those days? For a Photek release on Metalheadz anyway I'd guess(I'm pure wierd and I always loving finding out sales figures and stuff for old releases, so if anyone can shed some light let me know please). I saw a interview with Storm on that RBMA from the early 2000s and even then she said the average Metalheadz release at the time was 8000 sales. Now a vinyl release in any genre is a success if you can hit 500. When Z-Audio closed down I remember them saying some weren't even selling 300 copies. Ridiculous.

Nice one, glad you liked it. I use Ableton to mix. Unfortunately I don't have CDJs and only have the money to pick up the odd vinyl here and there, and usually I save it up for the random vinyl only releases.

For example, I know there's a lot of people that fondle Netsky's nuts in here and rave about his "new" sound but it's all recycled anyway. This track came out in 2004 on True Playaz and has many of the same elements:

Haha it is just not my kind of label at all. They really give me the vibe that they are the "cool kids" on the dnb playground. I don't mind a couple of tracks - I like that Tru Born Playa track with MC Fats that got released awhile back, but not a whole lot. Sub Zero's couple recent tunes have been poo poo. Just don't produce the kind of stuff I get into.

Older Tru Playaz stuff with Zinc, Pascal et al were wicked. I would kill to get the digital back catalogue. And Playaz has been on a roll recently (discounting a few tracks) - Busta Move, Tru Born Playa, Brighter Days, Food Fight, Proteus...all large.

Playaz 4 Real was a great LP that I still play, use these examples:

DJ Hype - End Situation
Just a really nasty and underplayed track with a great beat and languid bass. I loved the kind of trippy and laggy way it sounded in a set and I still play it when I'm in a more chilled or dub situation.

Zinc - 174 Trek
Pumps up the dancefloor and has the great kitchy drum roll that just comes in like a machinegun in the mix. Everybody recognizes it and goes "oh poo poo" and just gets down to it because it's fun and it's your bread and butter drums and bass.

There are a lot more on the album, not to mention the Real Vibes album before it which was less refined but really in that 98/99 era of dnb that made it great. Really, check them out as opposed to lots of the modern Ganja stuff.

Well many of you might not know but for me it's WICKED WEDNESDAY and so that means I have to post you 5 awesome tracks that won't fit into this week's Friday Five :v:
Regardless of that, it's drum and bass night on BBC Radio 1 Xtra, so that is always good.

WICKED WEDNESDAY
(Drumstep theme)
"Freak (Crissy Criss Drumstep Remix)" - Drumsound & Bassline Smith
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RK14qTO8Yzw
Everybody probably knows the original track - it's pretty amazing. But Crissy Criss trades a little of the song's speed and intensity for a killer sub-bass line (that this video doesn't illustrate well)and it sounds great.

"Dark Water (Dub Foundation Remix)" - Tantrum Desire
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDaVtcVEyjo
Tantrum Desire has been producing some pretty cool tracks on Viper Recordings lately (the original might pop up in my Friday 5), and this is one of them. It's pretty dark actually, and I'm pretty sure the samples are from Friday the 13th, so take that for what you will.

"Pasta Gangsta" - Dubsidia
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIZBmPQxPlk
I really like the Eastern sound to this track, and it gets awesome at the drop. Don't know a whole about these guys, but the other 2 tracks on the EP are dubstep. Probably my least favorite of the 5 I'm posting here, but still a very solid drumstep track if you are into that.

"Talk to Frank (J Rabbit Remix)" - Virus Syndicate
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nf9I0_VaGfc
I am in love with this track. I hate R&B music but if you put an awesome beat behind rapping, I'm all for it. I like that it kind of changes up speed throughout the song too.

"In Your Eyes" - Brookes Brothers ft. Jonny Osbourne
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4N9sle0How
I hate calling songs "chill" but I don't really know very many other words to describe it. The intro is just sitting back on the beach and soaking up the sun, but the drop is ridiculous. This is probably one of my favorite tracks right now.

Hopefully the last 2 weren't considered dubstep - I guess I am pretty sure they were drumstep but I haven't develop the ear to discern the 2 very well yet. I figured they both had a kick-snare pattern going on so I must be onto something.

'In Your Eyes' is dubstep. Notice how it's a whole shitload of a lot slower. Good track though, and I don't like much dancefloory dubstep.

Friday 5: Label Showcase Edition!

For this edition, I chose to showcase Ganja/Playaz.

"Don't Be Silly" - Original Sin (2008). I remember I got so fuckin' hyped up the first time I heard this track...this one let me know right out the gate that Original Sin was going to be a producer worth keepin' an eye on, and he hasn't failed me yet!

"Mr. Happy" - DJ Hazard & D*Minds (2007). Holy gently caress. This is a guaranteed "get down on the floor" track for me, I don't give a gently caress how I'm feelin'. Hazard and D*Minds always hit the spot for me when it comes to poo poo like that.

"Street Hawk" - Crystal Clear & Cabbie (2008). The only thing capable of making what was essentially "Knight Rider on a Motorcycle" badass. I definitely consider this one of my favorite Drum & Bass tracks ever.

"Good Times" - Bungle (2008). This dude right here...god drat. Bungle puts out some of the smoothest stuff right now. Definitely the perfect stuff for a lazy weekend.

"Super Sharp Shooter" - DJ Zinc (1995). Gotta give respect to the original sound...for a lot of people, this is a classic. I had heard it before when I was like, 14, but had no idea what this was until way later in life.

Old Town Road to EGOT

Hospital Records 5 8 (gently caress it, I'm posting 8 in order to cover my ground here)

For this week's Friday 5, we've each picked a label of our choosing and I picked Hospital, since it's the d&b label I'm most familiar with. Hospital's known for being on the frontlines of the liquid funk scene.

Let's get started with the guys who founded the label, Tony and Chris of London Elektricity. The duo launched the label in '96 and put out several 12"s as its first releases, both under the LE moniker and with their previous group, the Peter Nice Trio. The first proper album Hospital released was LE's Pull The Plug in '99. Chris departed the group in 2002, but Tony continued on using the LE moniker as the sole member, with a touring band to help him out for live shows. He's put out a few albums since, the latest being Yikes!, which was just released about a month ago.

London Elektricity uses a lot of live instruments in addition to sequenced stuff, and takes a good deal of influence from jazz, soul, and funk music.

1) London Elektricity - Just One Second (vocals by Liane Carroll)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LERwqzaZXA

In 2001, Hospital signed Lincoln Barrett, AKA High Contrast, who turned out to be one of their biggest acts. He's put out 3 albums, the latest of which was Tough Guys Don't Dance in 2007. He's in the process of writing a new album now.

2) High Contrast - Tread Softly
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5tizwSTxyI

Opening for High Contrast by doing a DJ set, Cyantific was discovered and was signed to Hospital shortly after. Like London Elektricity, Cyantific used to be a duo but split up in 2009. Now one half of the duo (Jon Stanley) is continuing to produce using the Cyantific name.

Cyantific released singles on Hospital for a few years up until early 2006, when they released their first (and only, so far) album, Ghetto Blaster.

3) Cyantific - Don't Follow (vocals by Diane Charlemagne)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnAwnGRJaEo

Danny Byrd, who signed to Hospital in 2000 and had been releasing singles for years, didn't release his debut album, Super Sized, up until 2008. The album contained a few of the singles he'd released so far.

4) Danny Byrd - Weird Science
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCuHfR1d8cQ

Mistabishi signed to Hospital in 2008 and released his debut album, Drop, in early 2009 to much acclaim. Though, later on in 2009, he was criticized by many after a DJ gig where he pretended to spin his own music. Hospital kicked him off the label for that,

5) Mistabishi - The Lights Really Bad
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xikZkS3xH8

I touched on these guys in last week's Friday 5, but Logistics and Nu:Tone are brothers that are signed to Hospital and used to perform together as a duo called Nu:Logic. They both signed in 2004 and have been putting out several releases since then.

6) Logistics - Eastern Promise
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLcszY2d2KE

7) Nu:Tone - Deep Old
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YObokkE3BQ

And finally, Netsky. If you've read the thread, you already know I love this kid. He got signed in late 2009 and put out his debut, self-titled album last year. He's only like 21, and I think it's awesome to see a young up-and-comer like him join the ranks of greats like London Elektricity and High Contrast, who have been doing this for over a decade.

8) Netsky - Let's Leave Tomorrow (vocals by Bev Lee Harling)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHFr-z4b6PY

So that's a brief introduction to/history of Hospital Records. There's definitely more to the label that I didn't put here. I just wanted to make sure I got to most of the big artists on the label.

If you're into liquid, I highly recommend you check out Hospital further. And I'll put a link to this and other Label 5 posts that come in into the OP, so newcomers can get schooled on this and other labels.

Older Ram Friday 5

Before I get into my list, I'll just go ahead and post Origin Unknown's Valley of the Shadows. This track really blew it up as one of the old school early dnb tracks. Made from the pre-programmed keyboard demo of a new controller and deep sin bass, it became an anthem on its release and is generally considered to be one of the originals when DnB was coming into its own.

Now to my list.

Andy C - Roll On
A true old school classic made when Andy C was still pretty much a teenager as I recall. Skittering old school beats and deep bass make it a real early runner for the genre. Released in 1995, it's one of those bridge tracks that was showing the form of a new genre.

Origin Unknown - Truly One
A classic, also from 1995, with brooding bass and oldschool beat. I liked this one but I heard it so much it's kind of worn on me so much as I prefer some of the remixes that came out in the mid 2000's. It's still a good song and deserves a listen, though, for originality.

Moving Fusion - Turbulence
Now we get to when I really started listening personally. The first time I heard this song, I HAD to have it on vinyl. Great driving beat and a bassline that just rolls and rolls. This song really defines the ram sound for me: rollers with basslines that are catchy, keep going forever in a hypnotic groove, and get your rear end moving. This song always ends too soon for me. A modern dnb classic.

Ram Trilogy - Human Future
I wish I could put the whole Molten Beats album on here, but I can't. This song has solidified Ram's sound of the time and is just a perfect example of what I love about them. A pleasure to mix as the bass rushes right in and you can overlap it making a surprise energy boost in your set. For me, this is what dnb was all about 98-00 when I started listening. I got this album at a used indie record store for 14 bucks when it used to retail for 50 usd. My prized crate digging find. (Take a listen to the other tracks on it including System Error, Both Worlds, and Flip the Traps)

Ram Trilogy - Titan
Simply one of the best dnb rollers of all time. Give it a listen and you'll know why. 2/4 beat using the subtle amen and funky bass make it never ever ever stop kicking rear end. Open with it. Close with it. Throw it anywhere in a set. It will kill. Has NEVER EVER left my bag EVER! One of my favorite songs of all time... obviously.

I definitely suggest listening to all the Ram Raiders EPs as well, great tracks like Believe, Elevator, and Fly Away. I absolutely love them as well.

For me, when I think about it, the turning point of Ram was probably upon the release of Bodyrock by Shimon and Andy C in 2001. Caused quite a stir when he kept closing his sets with it, and supposedly came from a demo drum sample on the new sampler they purchased. Just like Valley of the Shadows, this seems to have become a blessing and caused lots of "swing" dnb to be produced around the time by people like Twisted Individual and Fresh of Bad Company. Not my favorite song, but catchy. After this you see releases like Moving Fusion's album with Guy Fawkes (which I am in love with) and the new gen of Ram Trilogy releases. I like the new stuff, but the older stuff just really is what I got into when I started in dnb and it will be special to me forever.

No U-Turn

Ed Rush & Nico - Guncheck [1995]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7-CPqhjrQY
Very early techstep tune and probably my favorite. When the reese comes in on the second half I loose it. Crazy breaks and bass.

Ed Rush & Nico - Technology (Boymerang Remix) [1996]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTTQF7EanUs
Some proper sci-fi techstep. Distorted 808s and the Boymerang break.

Ed Rush, Trace, Fierce, Nico & Optical - EDTRAFIENICAL [1997]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3w7d9HxyfM
This was made in 1997 but wasn't actually released until last year. They only pressed 200 copies and unfortunately I wasn't able to get one. They do sell the mp3 on the online No U-Turn site though. Such a sick track from pretty much the entire line up of the label at the time.

Fierce & Nico - Crystal [1997]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSjmZdPbaAg
A long progressive techstep piece with massive subs. One of my favorites off of the groups album Torque.

Ryme Tyme - We Enter (Optical Remix) [1999]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngcjk_6TBwM
Remix of a track Ryme Tyme released on Saigon. By this time the breaks had pretty much gone and techstep was all two-step beats. A nice roller with a growling bassline.

So I'm a little late to the party, and i'm not even sure I will do Viper Recordings any justice but here we go.

VIPER RECORDINGS
I can't tell you a lot about the history of this label, as I only started listening to Drum & Bass about a year ago. I will tell you that it started out with 2 DJs, Matrix and Futurebound coming together to create tracks together. I'm pretty sure Viper Recordings actually existed before this, and was Futurebound's label, but I think that this the big game changer to get the ball rolling for the label.

So let's start it out with a tune from them right now.
"Coast to Coast (ft. Louis Smith)" - Matrix & Futurebound
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q23sJ-emqds
This isn't my absolute favorite M&F tune but it's a good song to illustrate how light and free sounding the stuff they produce is. It's got the energy, but it also has a friendly and fun sound to it.

"Polygon" - ShockOne
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAmC-bdkSSE
ShockOne is another Viper Recordings artist and is a pretty cool guy. This track and the Dirtyphonics remix of it both got pretty big and it's easy to see why. This one has a lot of energy. ShockOne has a new 2 part single coming out soon with Phetsta that looks to be pretty awesome too. Trailer can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Woipo0mnkg

"Uplifting" - GeneticBros
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gko2osws3Mg
The name of the track describes it all. This is a really happy and easy going track. It shows why Viper Recordings is one of the best liquid funk labels around - Hospital might be bigger and all but quality =/= quantity.

"Lightspeed" - Metrik
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuDyqdAjy7g
This is just an awesome track. Feels like you're out cruising on a friday night or something similar. This is the first track I heard by Metrik off of Viper Recording's 2010 Summer Slammers album. Metrik has produced a couple of awesome tracks in his span on Viper, T-1000 isn't liquid, but it is a killer track. Many of you probably know the singles of Futurebound vs. Metrik, which spawned Brave New World and Sabotage. Both are also great tracks.

"Feel So Free" - Smooth
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCU9ZfEmZRc
If you have seen my past Friday 5's you probably know that Smooth is one of my favorite producers to this day. He's just starting to get big, but his talents are amazing. He makes really energetic liquid funk, and does it well. This track is off of his first EP release and it's one of my favorites.

Yeah, that's me, had a pretty hectic few days. Here we go though!

New-school RAM Recordings!

Mostly avoiding the obvious tracks that everyone knows, no point putting them down here. Chase and Status - Take Me Away, Sub Focus - Timewarp etc etc. You should definitely check them out IF you haven't heard them before. In fact it's pretty much legally required.

Sub Focus - Swamp Thing
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luvBUrbSyFc
There's two stages to this track - that INSTANTLY recognisable lead hook coming into the mix, and then the UURRRGHHHHHH of the bass switchup. A perfect track - I can't think of anything you could do to this that would improve it. Pure fire in a rave. Destructive simplicity, one of Sub's best tracks ever and woefully unknown to people just getting into the scene. Certified classic.

Lomax - Artisan VIP
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASrHWEJBfl0
Killer sample, killer break, and above all the MOST killer of all killer basslines. This tune destroys crowds so hard Andy C had to sign it somehow even though the original came out on a whole different label. This will blow you away on a system.

Noisia - Deception

Sheer energy in this one. Fantastic buildup, signature Noisia impeccable production, then aggressive-as-gently caress bass stabs when all hell breaks loose and it drops.

Culture Shock & Furlonge - Surprise
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrRDn97E3tQ
This was actually the B-side to Bad Red, which was the bigger tune on release, but I believe this is actually better (and it seems to have stood the test of time better with DJs). I honestly believe Culture Shock is one of the absolute best producers in d&b today, and this track showcases his unbelievable ability to to absolutely nail production - notice how 'spacious' but tight the whole track sounds. Big hands-in-the-air buildup, funky bassline, great melodies and synths, he got it spot-on with this one. See also: Culture Shock - Footloose (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgfxLeld_yA)

Ram Trilogy - Lunar Bass (Commix VIP)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Tn1Bv7MjIo
It's kind of hard to describe tracks like this. Clean break, perfect rolling bassline with an ENORMOUS sub-bass. I love this track to bits, you just can't go wrong with it. Great change-up in the bassline after a while too, to keep things interesting.

Sorry, slackin', busy weekend and haven't been around a computer til now. Also listening to this old stuff has me going "why did I sell my EMU e6400 Ultra" and thinking about buying one again, and trying to relearn how to use it. Also, I omitted the 'Wormhole' LP, just focused on singled, but that album is incredible.

Virus Recordings

Pretty much all of the singles from VRS001 to about VRS010 are essential for me. Universal Project's "Vessel" is another huge personal favorite. After the Sonic & Silver single (VRS011, which I love the intro to "Rocket Launcher"), the label got a little hit or miss for me. I also wish they kept The Plainclothesman (the youngest brother of Optical) as the label photographer, working with Jon Black of Magnet Design, but Optical wanted to have full art control I guess, and went with the 3-D modeling stuff.

Personally I like the original way more. It might be because it came out when I was more in to neurofunk but this remix just seems to stop and start too much to me. Still pretty awesome, I love that hoover sound waaay too much. Always used to mix it with Magnetic by Telemetrik and BSE.

Buying another old Emu sounds great, until you go to hook it up and remember,"SCSI... poo poo." What the gently caress has even use SCSI anything in the past decade? On saying that there is a site that sells mods to turn the onboard floppy drive into a memory card reader. I have an old ESI-2000 I've not used for years and if I actually had the money to burn I'd be very, very tempted as that would turn what is sadly basically a paper weight into something really usable again.

That's a nice list there, comprising a couple of the only Virus tunes I actually don't mind listening too. As well produced and all that as they are I've just never really enjoyed them(or most D&B after about 97-98). It's funny you should stop your list after the first half dozen or so releases, it really shows how most labels just can't keep up the quality. Most don't last past the first few releases(V Recordings 1-12 and after that thumbs down), some can keep it up for dozens and dozens of singles before fading, like Moving Shadow #1-70 or so(now how come no one did a 5 on them?) and the first 50 Formation Records releases. Some are just very hit and miss all together - Sub-Base. And some I've just never really liked anything on them - going to speak heresy here and say most of the Full Cycle/Bristol lot, just never liked them at all.

Still I like that Matrix remix, and bizarrely I liked a lot of the stuff on his Metro label. No idea why really as it's not normally really my cup of tea. But his favourite stuff of mine he did was probably his earliest I'm afraid.

The whole sound of the Emu comes from the preamps I thought. I've got enough memory in mine I can just record a whole bunch of samples in way too loud and go from there. I've got a SCSI CD drive to go with it but I never mess with it. Just hook up anything to the input and sample away.

The Emus are all pretty famous for the fancy ZPlane filters.

Sure just priming and sampling is probably the easiest way to do it. But the problem with most hardware samplers I think is folk just realised it was easier to cut and edit and all that on the PC. It's why having a memory card input would be great, you could have the best of both worlds. Either sample and edit direct if you want, or pull stuff up from a PC. Beats saving/loading to floppy(here's hoping your bank size fits on one floppy or else you'll be there all night!). Or god forbid Zip disks. You'll need to do something though as soon as you turn it off the samples will be wiped from the onboard memory.

Really hardware samplers probably wouldn't have died such an early death if they followed PC specs more closely, with USB and IDE hard drives etc. There's a reason those later Akai S5/6000, Z4/Z8 and the Yamaha A series command better prices on eBay than say these Emus. They're actually more usable in a modern technological environment with their USB links.

I have a SCSI CD drive as well, though I can't remember if it reads CD-Rs or not. Actually I can't remember if the Emu will actually read .wav files. I know it will luckily read the Akai format, and I know the sample CDs I got with it are in Emu's own file format, just to make things that little bit more difficult. There are some programs out there that can read and convert it all for you though, but it's kind of ridiculous it's like that.

My old roommates is selling his, offered it to me for $200 US, but right now I don't even have a soundcard for my production computer, which is an old G5 running Logic 8. I pretty much just want it for the Z-plane filters, and the pre-amps (808 kick and +50 dB boost to the sample, possibly sound like an old Dillinja bass).

I was trying to think of solutions sans SCSI, and do what Stationlost suggested, just sampling in, and then I'd probably just re-record in to the G5. I had a SCSI CD-ROM and Zip drive with the old set up, plus an extra eight outputs. That floppy to memory card reader sounds interesting though; if you have any links to info about that, please post them up.

And as for the tunes, I could do a Metro five, that's another one of my favorite old labels. V Recordings, Full Cycle, Moving Shadow (I'm on MSXEP035), etc. I probably didn't even know about until they were on to their second phase of releases, although if I was in a second hand shop and saw anything on those labels (plus Metalheadz, Ram, Liftin Spirits and maybe one or two others), I'd pick them up just to have. If I did a Charge Recordings five, it would have been the first five releases, only bought a couple random releases soon after those five. When I got in to dnb I was very much a tech step fan boy.

The site is http://www.scsicardreaders.com/ . The guy who does it all has only just reopened this past month, after selling his old site (SCSIForSamplers.com) to MPCStuff - which if you can't tell does only MPC stuff! It's just a small garage operation I think but it seems to work fine as a couple of people on gearslutz seem to rave about his products, and they're not too bad price wise. If I'm reading right you need their card reader drive + their install kit which in total comes to like $130-140 which is only about £90 so not too bad really. Considering it could potentially breath new life into your sampler. The guy does stuff for Akai, Yamaha, Roland and more too, not just Emu.

Can't hot swap the card though, need to turn off to swap cards but that's not really that big a problem if they can take 4+gb memory cards(the maximum seems to vary by sampler). I mean most old SCSI HDD were only 4gb anyway!
