I am interested in historical spacecraft and rockets and want to get into building models of them. I'm in an information-gathering stage right now regarding construction and painting.

One thing that I'm not sure about is how to paint a model like this http://realspacemodels.com/html/atlaspg.htm which has a lot of shiny silver parts. The manufacturer of the model recommends Bare-Metal Foil but that seems like it would work better on a model like this http://realspacemodels.com/html/72gtpg.htm which has smaller silver sections. Is it possible to use an airbrush to get an even shiny-metal-looking finish?

Fake edit: Just want to note that I plan on doing some cheaper plastic models first before spending the money on the resin models, though those are my goal since they look most accurate.

Excellent, a "Sink the Bismarck" boxset.

Featuring HMS Cossack, HMS Suffolk, HMS Hood, Bismarck, HMS Ark Royal and Prinz Eugen.

http://www.airfix.com/airfix-products/new-models-for-2011/ships/a50120-sink-the-bismarck-waterline-battleships-a50120/

This reminds me somewhat of the Tamiya Pearl Harbour boxsets with all the Pearl Harbour attack carriers and another one with all the Escorts. I wish I could find a shop that would sell them.

Took the top image, screwed around with it in photoshop so it just had the graffiti at the right scale then printed out on this stuff:
http://www.craftycomputerpaper.co.uk/productdetail.aspx?productcode=151

Then varnish it for waterproofing, then stick it on the sides of the APC. It comes out rather thick so I actually covered the entire side of the thing with one piece, which eliminates any edges showing.

(Sounds pretty easy, but that's the fifth or sixth attempt. And the reason I'm not showing you the other side is that it's not as good as that one.)

Here's a (Zvezda?) ISU-122 in 1:35th scale. Since I got it partially completed with no decals, and I don't even have a printer with me right now, let along fancy decal paper, I did my own period-accurate inspirational slogan on the sides. Came out kind of crooked, but good enough. The figures are from a bunch of manufacturers. The tank crewman is Zvezda, the infantrymen with shoulderboards are MiniArt. The ones with PPS submachineguns are Tamiya and the remaining two are Dragon.

Sometimes you get lucky and get a box with little to no grease. Otherwise, cut the top off another box and line it. That gives you greater thickness for a cutting surface, too.

The 50th Annual Shizouka Hobby Show started today and i'm going to post some of the stuff that was on show. I won't post any of the Gundam stuff Cause this is not really the place for it:

Hasegawa's new Su-33, for the masters of masking tape!

http://twitpic.com/4wginy

The new Tamiya super Sherman. This a post-war Sherman tank used by the Israeli Military. Apparently everything in the kit is new except the tracks.

Fine Molds Jeep in 1/20 scale. Apparently they bought a real one to refer to when designing the model. It is the earlier, less common slat grille jeep.
http://twitpic.com/4wg2br

Remember the huge fire at the Oil Refinery after the earthquake? THanks to tomytech you can recreate it in your N scale model train layout.

Tamiya P-51D Mustang in 1/32. Judging by the removable engine cowlings i'm guessing it will be just as good as their spitfires.

Thats all for now

The detail on it is very nice, and it's going together pretty well, too. It's a nice size, too...about a foot long, I guess? I'm planning to do some battle damage on the hull when I paint it.

Isn't it recommended that you paint on the sprue then assemble it? Or am I thinking of another Galactica model?

Edit: yes it says on the first page of the instructions to paint the basic colours on the sprue before assembling.

Really looking forward to seeing the BSG I've always fancied trying some of that range out.

Despite the fact that I still need to finish the Pz.Kpfw IV and the ISU 152 on the previous pages I couldn't resist little bad boy. I've always loved them and think this is a spot on little model. (Tamiya again.)

And yes I have fixed the mold line on the side of the barrel.

They can say whatever the gently caress they want, but I'm not going to paint parts on sprues. Bear in mind that these instructions are coming from people who put lovely adhesive decals-stickers, really-in the package. The plastic is good quality but I won't be using those.

I've made my first AFV, a Jadgpanther. I think it turned out well. Italeri kit, 1/72.

This is the first time I've 'washed' a kit, too. I think it turned out well, though the color patch you can make out is a place I had to repaint. Rubbed too hard with the Q-tips.

The hash marks for the lower glacis plate were missing, so I faked them with putty. Also you can see my half-assed silver drybrushing for wear tread-marks.

88mm killah

Also: Box post

Got a box from the Ukraine a few weeks ago from HobbyTerra. Got a box today from the Sprune Bros.

Ever since I got back into this hobby I wanted to make this kit; I have a strange interest in cargo planes.

Came with some photo-etched details, which I've never had before.

Also got this kit, which just started production. It also came with photo-etched details.

So since I was ordering, I picked up 2 1/72 Rodan kits for just $7 each.

8-rad armoured car

Stalin tank with the hemispherical turret. I feel like the guy on top should be going

From Sprune Brothers, I got this, another kit I've wanted to make for a long time:

$20 off what it is locally, but it cost $20 to ship. The advantage is that I also got to pick up this:

Which is a favourite weirdo aircraft of mine.

Thanks! I've been considering exactly that, but I'm kinda hesitant. I'm worried that I'll mess things up. I even bought a snow weathering stick for that purpose, but still. The IS-3 and the 8-rad are definitely in, though, for the next phase of weathering treatment. My access to modelling supplies is somewhat limited right now; can you grind up any old properly colored pastels to get the proper effects? I've read a little on how to prepare that stuff.

No, but this was:

Anyway, pictures from the raid on Osama bin Laden's compound showed remnants of a modified UH-60 Blackhawk with some limited stealth/quiet approach capabilities.

As a former Engineer at Sikorsky, I can confirm they never built anything like that on the line at Stratford, but that doesn't mean the Military doesn't have them.

Like Jack said. (So Jack, how do you quiet down a helicopter rotor anyway? I'm looking at the Dragon model and what comes to me is larger blades = more lift = slower rotation speed?)

The look of the things is still mostly conjecture, though. All anyone has seen so far is the tail.

I'm remembering all the Stealth Fighter and Stealth Bomber models we had in the mid-80s and I'm sure we'll see the same stuff here. Dragon had the first good models of both if I remember right, that 1/144 two-pack.
