If a DSLR and two lenses are back-breaking for you, I think you need to hit the gym and work up to a more average level of strength. Either that or get a better strap and bag combo. Or stop using a 400 f/2.8 as a walkaround lens.

The "this is too heavy to handhold" is the biggest :psyduck: complaint I see here. My usual wedding combo is ~13 pounds, and I carry that all day (usually at the same time as another camera weighing about the same). I don't really think I'm the beefiest guy in the world, but some pushups could do wonders.

However, if I was hiking through the mountains or something, I would consider leaving the L zooms at home and carrying a light prime or two just for ease.

It's a radial!
Get a R-strap or a Chinese ebay clone, carry ONE camera, ONE lens. You really don't need a telephoto lens out on vacation unless you're specifically planning to go bird watching or something. Just get a good normal focal length zoom lens and you're set.

Alternatively get a big camera bag and have your wife sherpa it around for you.

If you're going to Europe where taking a rolling suitcase is easy then a DSLR is no problem. If the backpack gets heavy I just chuck it over the suitcase.

If you are backpacking then you can get the backpacks which connect onto a bigger backpack. Just make sure you can't open it easily. Or just carry the smaller one on your stomach.

Its a pain but not that bad..

X100 if you want to travel light and easy.

Anyone around here got any good/bad experiences with any of the online lens rental services? I want to try out a few Canon lenses this summer before buying one, and want to make sure I avoid problems.

I got a friend who recommended borrowlenses.com, but they're based in California while I'm in Chicago. I'd like to go local if I can, just because it makes me nervous shipping expensive lenses long distance.

Oh hey, I work at borrowlenses.com. Don't worry about long distance shipping since I personally make sure those lenses are packed appropriately. I just got promoted to shipping dept, but I keep a watchful eye on our boxers and make sure they keep their poo poo on top of things. If something breaks during shipping (the receiving guys could tell if it's shipping damage or customer damage) they usually overnight you a replacement. Just call and ask!

I've seen how fedex man handle those boxes first hand and our larger orders would sometimes come in in boxes that are beat to poo poo, but our gear casualties are surprisingly low. Most of the 70-200/2.8s (canon and nikon) are shipped in their little pouch things, so its double the protection.

The number of suitcases you are traveling with is huge. As Fists Up said, if you're carrying only a backpack, I would personally leave the slr at home and go with an x100. I travel 100% for work but have plenty of suitcase space and hotels to act as home base. When I go out on little trips, I always take my XA and a few rolls of film and sometimes I take my 5d2 and two out of three: 35/2, 50/1.8, 135/2. But I would be miserable if I had to carry it around on my back for 12 months.

Lens rental places in the UK seem horrendously overpriced compared to their US counterparts. I'm looking into hiring a 70-200L IS II for a three week trip to the Vancouver area, and it's going to wind up costing me about £300.

Could you rent locally in Vancouver if that's the price it would cost you to take the lens from the UK (I'm assuming that's the case because of the GBP)?

I've done two trips now with only the X100 and now I'm planning to do my 3 week trip to Moscow/Mongolia with only the x100. I love it. If you aren't some kind of specialist liking photographs of building gargoyles or birds or something requiring a long lens, and you just like general photography, the X100 is simply amazing.

The fact you cannot change lenses is just so freeing, on top of the benefit of not carrying a ton of crap, but you see something you want to shoot, and just frame it as best you can, and crop down later if you need to. I was planning to shoot for an entire year with only the X100, and wasn't sure how I would find it, but it's honestly amazing, and I can't recommend the one-camera-lens for a year approach enough.

Plus, I'm a literal gym bunny, and could easily carry lots of gear without becoming tired, but there is more to it than just the weight. There is the hassle of traveling with extra cases, having a way to carry it easily when you're out (verses the X100 just around your neck at all times), and having to change lenses.

Yeah, I would say don't give it much thought and see where the technology is when you're getting ready to leave. I'm doing a road trip across the US in a couple of weeks (so no real need to pack light) and I'm probably just going to bring my NEX and friend's Hasselblad.

edit: make the USA your first stop so you can buy whatever it is cheapest :D

edit 2: if you're looking for a medium format travel camera, the Mamiya 7 is pretty awesome (albeit pricey).

Whenever I go backpacking I just carry my 40D with the 17-50 2.8 and my S90. The S90 is good for when I want to leave my stuff in a hostel or something and go out with just my jeans, or when I don't want to worry about being jumped in a Favela or something.

I also refuse to carry anything larger than a 22L pack in the summer and I haven't found the camera wrapped in a t-shirt to be much of a hassle. Definitely not as bad as books, which can get ridiculous.

I have tested it against my 5D+35L and feel zero reason to use that combo over the X100. I am only keeping the 35L for when I eventually upgrade to the 5D III or IV as I'm sure it will outresolve the X100 at that point, but it's a pointless combo at this period for me. Gathering dust in my closet.

And this one is a full body shot at f2 and still has a blurry background. Not by a lot, but enough to give a nice foreground/background separation while still showing you what the scene is (which is what I love about 35mm)

I and several other goons rock the Kata DR-467i that's very reasonably priced. I love mine. The body and lenses will fit in the bottom compartments, the gorilla pod should fit in the top, and the three small middle pockets will hold the various other bullshit. Fun bonus: will fit up to a 17" laptop in the back pocket.

(Click the black one, for some reason it's way cheaper.)

I do the camera-wrapped-in-a-towel thing myself. Wife gave me some nervous looks the first few times, but once she realized how impact resistant DSLR bodies actually are she came around.

My default backpacking load is my 55-250mm. It's a cheap lens, but has huge flexibility.
