Ahh. I guess I meant more as a lead cast member, though there is a great lack of enlisted in these shows regardless. I guess maybe the idea being that SGC is high-clearanced enough that your average Joe isn't trusted enough, yet we have butter-bar Scott slutting around Icarus Base, so who the gently caress knows?

Slightly better than Starship Troopers where Rico just keeps getting brevetted higher and higher as everyone is dying around him. He might still be getting paid like a Private at the end of that film. :v:
Scott was a first lieutenant not a butter bar (Greer called him a butter bar in anger once and he got rightfully pissed about it). Of course he was hooking up with James who was a second lieutenant so your point pretty much still stands.

And an awesome character! But yeah, she was also the most beautiful person to probably ever be cast in the entire franchise, with the possible exception of Sharee. God that sounds like such a lovely reset of the finale. It's a movie, you don't need to return to the status quo. Plus you'd think the ancients would have put in a return to Earth option in their security program.

The Lucian aliance sucked, Stargate command can defeat the Goulds, Wraith and Ori, but it's the space mafia that can finally sneak nukes into earth. Just binged though the second half of SGU, it became a much better show. They formed a cohesive ongoing plot that wasn't lame. I wish studios/networks/cable had more faith in their shows to build a fan base. If you look at season 1 ratings of shows like Cheers and Seinfeld they would be have canceled by today's standards. It's cool though I can now catch up on wresting to get my ScyFy fix.

If there is one thing I know from watching Stargate it is you never can expect the ancients to have done anything logical. I still don't understand why the ancients didn't just fly Atlantis back to earth when they abandoned Pegasus.

Not that I think their intentions have much merit, but it seems like the producers were trying to compare the Lucian alliance to terrorists (it's applicable to real life! somehow!), so there was no clear Central Bad Guy/Organization To Defeat. Compare that to the Goulds, Wraith, and Ori, which were much more centralized, organized, and coherent enemies, so relatively more "straightforward" to do effective battle with. (They're like the US's enemies in the world war!)

Or maybe I'm trying to be kind to the writing staff, because yeah, seasons 9 and 10 were filled with some awful plot holes, way beyond the fun, campy "hey wait a minute" moments of seasons 1-8.

This is the main problem I had with it. Other than that SGU was beginning to grow on me. The second season was much better when they stopped the overemphasis on the drama and started doing something more scifi.

I'm not far enough in my rewatch to see the space corn mafia introduction, but wasn't the Lucian Alliance a pretty centralized organization? They "owned" several planets and a bunch of ships, and it was pretty easy to identify and find them.

SGU could have used the Lucians in a better way - Earth establishes an uneasy treaty with the Lucians (Afghanistan!) but a splinter group goes rogue and attacks both sides in terrorist attacks to break the treaty (Taliban!). That would have at least made a bit more sense, rather than a tiny fringe element of the galaxy attacking basically the sole superpower, for no apparent reason. They could have reworked the Lucian attack on Destiny as well so its a rogue group trying to find massively superior weapons - jokes on them though, Destiny is a piece of poo poo!

Haha, now that I think about it, did Earth get ANYTHING out of Destiny/SGU, or did it just suck up a metric rear end-ton of resources?

In season 4 now, just saw Lt Troy as a russian scientist! Now we just need Riker!

Totally possible. I was so bored with seasons 9 and 10, so my recollection of the Lucian alliance as being a bunch of scattered terrorist cells could be completely inaccurate.

I think the only episode I enjoyed from S9 and S10 was the one where those bugs attacked SG1 and Woolsey (they were like the beetles from The Mummy). But the only reason that episode was so much fun was because it made me feel all fuzzy for The Muumy.

Carter was so badly used. Amanda Tapping was obligated to be there x amount of episodes, but it felt like the writers didn't really want her there. Carter is supposed to be the only person even smarter than McCay, but during a technical crisis she never teams up with Rodney to solve it, instead relegated to paperwork and administration bullshit. It's like hiring Einstein, but all you have him do is make coffee.

That doesn't sound as cool as the idea I heard them floating back when Atlantis was cancelled. The broad idea was that the IOA was gonna bring in a bunch of science and engineering specialists to start figuring Atlantis out; after a few weeks they'd decide to start gutting the city to better study its tech in Area 51-type labs, and maybe build more drone outposts like the one in Antarctica. The Atlantis crew thinks that's a terrible idea because it'll deprive the Pegasus galaxy of its only real defense against the Wraith (and besides, if the Wraith could find and adapt a ZPM to their hive ships once, they might be able to do so again), so they hijack Atlantis and take it back to Pegasus.

I know the writers wanted her to be the only one smarter than McKay but from just re watching all of Atlantis and sg-1 MaKay's exploits blow her out of the water. Eh. I still wish they had to struggle more with it. I know expecting realism out of scifi is silly, but the only real problem they had at first was a nearly-dead ZPM forcing them to surface lest the shield collapse and kill them all inglouriously. Even something like an inch of water in the gateroom and the lights not turning on when they arrived would have made it much better, imo.

The be fair most of the time McCay was working with Ancient technology, while Carter was working with the equivalency of stick and stones, McCay most of the time wasn't doing so much invention as in understanding Ancient technology (which buttons to press).
