Can you guys recommend me a quality BD player with Netflix streaming capabilities in the <$150 range? I had a PS3 and it kicked the bucket on me, and I don't feel like dropping the money on a new one since I don't really play ps3 games anymore.

I don't mind admitting part of my collection is made up of broadcast versions. I got 'Slap Shot', 'The Taking of the Pelham 123' and 'The Warriors'. To my knowledge these aren't actually out on Blu-Ray, and in the case of The Warriors there's no way in hell i'm buying that terrible loving Director's Cut.

I'm finally getting a chance to watch some of the Criterion blu-rays I picked off of Amazon a few weeks back and Blow Out may be one of the finest restorations I've ever seen. I was absolutely stunned by how pristine it looked, especially considering it was filmed during an era where most movies had a hazy, dirty look to them. The movie itself was amazing, too. Definitely a blind buy that paid off in every respect.

Oh no, Blu-Ray.com confirmed in their review that the Stanley Kubrick boxset uses the poo poo Universal disc of Spartacus. What a shame. I was really hoping that Warner would clean it up. http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Stanley-Kubrick-Limited-Edition-Collection-Blu-ray/20820/#Review I guess I should just grab the standalone of Dr. Strangelove/Lolita/Barry Lyndon and call it a day. I already have the others on HD-DVD.

I'm quite interested in this. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Stanley-Kubrick-Visionary-Filmmaker-Collection/dp/B004MW57KA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1307002694&sr=8-1 It's a Kubrick blu ray collection. It is missing one or two movies, notably Dr. Strangelove but still seems like a decent collection. Does anyone know how the transfers are? Any good?
|
# ? Jun 2, 2011 09:20 |

They're (almost definitely) the same transfers as can be found on the Warner discs, which are pretty good transfers. You can see screencaps on DVDBeaver or Blu-Ray.com. Nothing to get excited about (except for 2001 Kubrick's films are pretty grainy) but a big improvement on the DVDs.

Bought the Alien Anthology off Amazon.co.uk, and it came in an actual case, not the paper sleeve thing like I thought it would, which is a pleasant surprise. Another bonus is that it cost $33 US shipped, which is as much as it would have cost off amazon.com for just Alien and Aliens, so I'm getting all the bonus materials and Alien 3 and Resurrection for free. Sweet deal. Have only watched the first two so far and they look fantastic, and the disk swapping feature that skips all the menus and stuff at the beginning of the next movie is awesome, I hope they put that in every movie series from here on.

It ended up being the exact same master as the existing Blu-Ray. Also, Kino-Lorber confirmed Eisenstein's Strike and David Holzman's Diary for August. Also, also, I picked up Once Upon a Time in the West and it's one of the best HD transfers I've ever seen. henpod posted:I'm quite interested in this. My advice: Buy the standard releases a la carte. They're mostly around $10-12 in stores, and you can pick and choose which ones you want. I already have Strangelove (digibook) and Clockwork Orange, and plan on buying Eyes Wide Shut and 2001. Then, if I end up seeing Criterion's Paths of Glory on sale, I can grab that, too. The full set is only worthwhile (to me, anyway) if you're a Kubrick completist or something. Or if you see it at a great price. I feel like the set is nice, but it doesn't offer anything mind-blowing, and is largely a cash-in on the Kubrick name.

Steve Yun posted:WTF. I think most were scanned half a decade ago at 2k and could benefit from a modern 4k scan since the tech has improved a lot recently.

For anyone on the fence, Legend looks absolutely phenomenal, especially the theatrical cut. The production design on this thing is ridiculously opulent and over-the-top (which is really the only reason it has any fans, I think) and the transfer is just gorgeous. I've seen this movie probably a dozen times and on bluray it's like someone wiped vaseline off the camera lens and you can finally see all the crazy detail in every scene. That said it's still a terribly silly movie, a relic of pure multiplex cheese from the mid-80s (especially with that Tangerine Dream score!). I can't help but love it though.
