Dmitri Russkie, go follow your own recommendation: Yojimbo for you!

I really liked Rosemary's Baby. The directing style is pretty similar to Chinatown. Polanski seems to like low angles and muted colors that make the brighter colors stand out more. The casting was perfect: everyone was creepy when they were supposed to be and shifty when they were supposed to be. I thought it was interesting that the question as to whether all of this is real or not is only definitively answered at the end. Polanski does an excellent job making the mundane scary or intense.

Das Boot: I've seen just enough of this to know it's a lot better than it sounds. Jürgen Prochnow is so, so awesome.
The Dead: I'm interested in the interplay between John and Anjelica Huston, even if they're on opposite sides of the camera.
Fish Tank: (2009) I do not know a thing about this movie except that everyone who sees it apparently thinks really, really hard about it afterward.
Kiss of the Spider Woman: Julia Carpenter's such a badass! I'm so excited about seeing this movie where Spider-Woman takes on such foes as Doc Ock and… This isn't what I think it is, is it?
Mishima: Pretty to look at, directed by the guy who wrote Taxi Driver, and insanely controversial in the country where it's set. Not a hard sell for me.

My Left Foot: Coming to Netflix Instant very soon, and I only know Day-Lewis from his mustache roles.
Raise the Red Lantern: Randomly-picked movie that coincides with my interest in Chinese cinema.
Splendor in the Grass: I have seen zero films by America's Tattletale, Elia Kazan.
Uzak: I've never seen a Turkish film.

Enjoy this thing that I haven't seen.

Days of Heaven - My favorite of the 3 Malick movies that I've seen. The story manages to stay emotionally involving despite the sparse dialogue. It's not super complex or anything, but it works. Meanwhile, the images that appear throughout the movie are just stunning. I'm glad I watched it on blu-ray.

1. Persona - No clue what it's about.

2. Tokyo Story - I think I might have a problem appreciating muted emotions in movies. I might have a hard time watching this.

3. Some Like it Hot - Wilder is pretty great.

4. The Night of the Hunter - Actually had this for a week but never got around to watching it for some reason. :zombie: Has been on list the longest. :zombie:

5. Rio Bravo - John Wayne seemed like he was a real rear end in a top hat. Maybe I'll enjoy some of his films anyway.

6. The Graduate - I can't really get excited to watch this for some reason.

7. The Rules of the Game - Ranked as one of the very best movies of all time, I think it's a about class warfare or something. Ooooh, a war movie!

8. Schindler's List - I never go out of my way to watch Holocaust related things anymore. It's just too drat depressing.

9. Days of Heaven The New World - I'm going to guess that The New World has little dialogue, amazing images, and lots and lots of wildlife shots. Anything else would be a radical departure.

10. Le Samouraï - This sounds...interesting.

You know when you hear about a movie and all the acclaim that goes with it, and you think "Man, that movie cant be THAT good" then you watch it and you are totally blown away in every aspect? Well, that was The Seventh Seal for me. Goddamn that was amazing.

Battleship Potemkin - No excuses
Dr. Mabuse the Gambler - Lang has never let me down, but this is kinda 4 hours long
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly - Seen the beginning, parts of the middle, and the end. But never all the way through in one sitting.
Midnight Cowboy - Never in the mood
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind - I love Miyazaki but never had the guff to watch this
The Wild Bunch- Ultra-violent western? Yes please.
Raging Bull - Never in the mood...again.
The Sting - This is a cool movie, right?
The Man who Fell to Earth / Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence - Cheating here, but David Bowie is the man
Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters - It looks beautiful, and with Glass doing the music you can't go wrong

Loved every second of The Treasure of Sierra Madre, and I'll add it to the list of best movies I seen so far thanks to this thread. It's so exciting, so much adventure and mystery right till the end. Bogart going slightly insane towards the end was a brilliant piece of acting, and so is everything that Walter Huston does during the movie. It was also unexpectedly funny and found myself laughing plenty of times. But at it's core it's quite a dark movie, and the way Bogart gets killed off, even if we don't see it, was quite brutal. and the tension between characters is palpable trough out most of the movie.

Favorite scene, when they are buying the burros and Howard tells the other two to get going, adventure theme song kicks in and we get...almost a minute of Bogart, Huston and Holt packing donkeys. Not sure why, but found the whole scene funny and completely self aware due to mixture of the music and what they were doing.

And now I know where the "badges" quote comes from. Always thought it was from Blazing Saddles. During the movie I was also reminded of There Will Be Blood, which seems to be not a coincidence, as it this was the movie that PTA watched every night while filming TWBB. This connection alone makes TotSM and TWBB twice as better. :colbert:

My shame list:

The Asphalt Jungle There seems to be plenty of Noir on this list.

Stray Dog Another Kurosawa Noir.

The Great Dictator I haven't seen this Chaplin.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance Return of the western spot.

Strangers on a Train CSI did a remake of this episode of sorts. It was terrible.

L.A. Confidential Big expectations for this one.

The French Connection Only know the car chase scene.

Bonnie and Clyde Been avoiding watching this for some reason.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture Love the TV show(Both the original and TNG) but never found the patience to watch the movies. Even the ones that are suppose to be good.

A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies Martin Scorsese talks about cinema for 4 hours.

Have seen so far: Mulholland Drive, The Departed, 2001:A Space Odyssey, M, The Trial, Vertigo, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, On the Waterfront, Magnolia, Brazil, Days of Heaven, The Shining, Throne of Blood, The Searchers, La Grand Illusion, Ladri di Biciclette, Tokyo Story, À bout de souffle, Once Upon a Time in America, Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain, Boogie Nights, The Wild Bunch, Dial M for Murder, Network, La Dolce Vita, American: The Bill Hicks Story, Le Samouraï, Bande à Part, Solaris, Singin' in the rain, Infernal Affairs, Notorious, The Maltese Falcon, Touch of Evil, Some Like it Hot, High and Low, To Catch a Thief, Modern times, The Bad Sleep Well, In the Mood for Love, The Apartment, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Punch Drunk Love, Stalag 17, Dog Day Afternoon, It's a Wonderful Life, Forbidden Planet, Double Indemnity, Gojira, Woyzeck, Badlands, The Night of the Hunter, M*A*S*H, Lady from Shanghai, The Big Sleep, History of Violence, The Treasure of Sierra Madre.

I know that ST:TMP is often considered a very slow/boring movie, even for Star Trek, but I kinda already know Wrath of Khan. The Internet spoiled all the good scenes so I'm in no hurry to get to it.

You're going to be watching this, if only so you can watch the following trilogy afterwards. The first movie isn't really required watching for anything other than novelty reasons, atleast in regards to the following trilogy, but I have a hunch I'm not going to see Wrath of Khan on your list until I knock this one off.

So I watched Hitchcock's Psycho, and frankly, didn't much care for it. I did like the directing, but not the pacing, the screenplay and least of all the dialogue. Whatever this movie was when it came out just hasn't kept, providing me with a disappointing experience when watched today. It was also the first movie on my list I've fallen asleep watching. Tell a lie, I also fell asleep watching Apocalypse Now. 7.5 for not being a bad movie.

#5. Citizen Kane This is a movie I've almost watched like 5 times, the first times I just couldn't find a copy anywhere but as of late have been spoiled abit and don't want to finish watching another hailed classic with a reaction of "meh". Last remaining entry of my original list.

#8. Ran Despite liking Kurosawa's B/Ws, this movie has always flown under my radar.

#9. Rain Man For the longest time I thought I'd seen it, turns out I had it mixed up with another movie.

#11. Amélie A movie about a french girl which is supposedly very sweet. Oh boy.

#12. The Birds If nothing else came of my lukewarm reception of Psycho, it did get me to want to see more Hitchcock "classics" I've missed, if only to see wether they are as disappointing.

No longer shameful: The Shawshank Redemption (9.0); The Good, The Bad & The Ugly (9.5); 12 Angry Men (8.5); Apocalypse Now (7.0); Singin' in the Rain (9.0); Schindler's List (9.0); Psycho(7.5)

My Neighbor Totoro - This started a little slowly but got better. The first third of the movie was just basically Mei and Satsuki chasing around dust bunnies and acorns.

Totoro had some funny scenes. I liked the umbrella/Catbus sequence at the bus stop. Animation was good as well.

IMDb list:

#112 The King's Speech - Now out on DVD. New best picture. I saw some clips of it on the Academy Awards show. 4/27/11

#129 Witness for the Prosecution - I've liked every Billy Wilder movie thus far. I don't know anything about this. (added 1/7/11)

#167 Finding Nemo - Saw some of this on TV and it seemed decent. 4/2/11

#170 Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels - Is this similar to Snatch? 4/23/11

#171 The Secret in Their Eyes - Recently acclaimed foreign movie I heard about on TV. 5/2/11

#172 The Best Years of Our Lives - One of 25 films to win 7+ Oscars. 4/23/11

The Bourne Identity - Technically not on the top 250 but I need to watch this before The Bourne Ultimatum (which is currently #173). 4/7/11

#183 Gandhi - I believe this was the first movie I added to the Netflix queue when I got that service. Then I added another 300+ movies and this vanished somewhere into ether. 5/18/11

#186 Judgment at Nuremberg - Vaguely remember hearing of it but never got around to it. 5/25/11

#188 The Night of the Hunter - Never even heard of it besides the references in the thread. 6/2/11

O Lucky Man was certainly different. I've been trying to find a way to describe it and the best I can come up with is that it's the type of movie Buñuel would have made if he had been British. The mixture of surrealism and dry British humour doesn't always work, but it makes for a lot of very enjoyable moments in a somewhat uneven film.

Updated list:

La grande guerra I get the feeling this is one of those overlooked classics.

Plein soleil Clément is another director from whom I've seen one magnificent film and never got around to watching any others.

Un homme et une femme Don't know much about this, a romance of some sort.

Muerte de un ciclista Been wanting to watch more Spanish films, this seems to be near the top of the list of the ones I haven't watched.

The Last Command Another silent I need to get around to.

The One-Armed Swordsman This seems like the next logical choice.

Lagaan One of the big ones from contemporary Bollywood. Why is it 4 drat hours though?

Fat Girl From one fat girl Criterion to another.

Riget Time to add another miniseries I haven't seen. All I know is it's made by Lars von Trier.

The Andromeda Strain I hear this is good, I've been meaning to watch more Sci-fi flicks.

The Andromeda Strain I hear this is good, I've been meaning to watch more Sci-fi flicks.

There aren't enough American science fiction films like this one.

Scenes from a Marriage: Let me start by saying that this movie has some drat fine Volvo action going for it, something that I feel Wild Strawberries completely screwed me on. It's second only to Peter Weir's The Last Wave, but Bergman should be drat proud for showing off such a finely colored 145 station wagon. Now, with regards to everything else in the film (I know, the car stuff is really the crux, but still), it was an engrossing drama with legendary performances by the two leads. My favorite sequence was easily "Paula," wherein Liv Ullmann experiences such an incredible progression of emotions so seamlessly that I'm hard-pressed to cite a better acting job in any movie. The way she reacts to Johan's confession of an affair, dissolving into a sort of catatonia, only to be hit with the reality of the situation like a freight train while in bed, completely breaking down, was phenomenal. If any reaction of mine to the film was less than of the utmost adoration, it was, through no fault of the movie's, merely due to the fact that my ability to identify with any of the situations is hindered by my relative youth and inexperience. That alone prevents it from being a true favorite of mine, but that certainly has the potential to change with time.

1. The Great Dictator: I've only seen two Chaplins (Gold Rush and Modern Times) and thoroughly adored them both.

2. The Color of Pomegranites: Not much of an idea of what to expect here, but a trusted friend of mine recommends it with the highest esteem.

3. Shane: I'm trying really hard to get through the majority of these classic Westerns.

4. Forbidden Planet: I feel especially bad about this because I am really into science fiction.

5. Nashville: There's got a lot of classic Altman I haven't seen.

6. The Hidden Fortress: Kurosawa movies tend to put me in a nice glow after watching one of his movies, and I gather that this one is no different.

7. M: I'm confident that it's a good idea to watch the majority of Lang's stuff.

8. Tokyo Story: Might as well start banging out these They Shoot Pictures movies. I really want to check out Ozu.

9. Satantango: Lot of love floating around this forum for this movie.

10. Red River: I'm pretty sure I've seen this, but I was probably 6 or 7 and don't remember a thing about it.

Watched - The Godfather Part II, City of God, Paths of Glory, North by Northwest, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Fanny and Alexander, 8 1/2, The Rules of the Game, His Girl Friday, The Wages of Fear, Rashomon, Stroszek, The French Connection, Singin' in the Rain, Cries and Whispers, Grand Illusion, Gaslight, Aliens, Wild Strawberries, Scenes from a Marriage

I kinda liked Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Okay I'm lying it's a very boring movie and there's a a lot wrong of wrong in it. But I did find the story interesting, even if it's a repeat of one of the TV show stories, and the runtime is far to long for what it's telling. But it's okay. Spock, Bones and most of the crew are fun to watch back together. Kirk was the weak link of the cast really. Not sure who's fault, the script or Shatner, maybe a little bit of both. The music was also excellent and sneaking the old theme into some of the score was a great move.

What I didn't like was that it was too long, and it looks boring. The sets are dark, the clothes are all beige, white, brown and dull blue. It lacks the color contrast of the 60's show or the shininess of the later TNG series. It just makes the picture look dull.

But the movie wasn't horrible.

Electronico6, enjoy The Great Dictator.

The Andromeda Strain is a great film, though its plodding technical nature does make me want to nitpick some of the decisions made in the film like the epileptic scientist who is left alone to just stare at a screen when there are clearly a bunch of other people at the base who could be there with her. They're ultimately peripheral issues to the larger whole, though, so I didn't mind too much.

How cool is that split-screen tracking shot while they investigate the town? It's such a clever way to keep the momentum up while showing the corpses.

I still can't decide if it was really cool or cheesy, maybe a bit of both. It's a really nice conceptual idea, and it works, but I'm not sure why there needed to be so much blank space, which I felt drained some of the tension.

I thought the blank space was pretty striking. It felt appropriately bleak. I didn't like a lot of the split-diopter shots, though. Too many used without any real reason. That killed some tension for me.

Peaceful Anarchy, my Dad woke me up at 11 at night when I was a kid to watch The Thing With Two Heads on HBO (or one of those pay channels). I don't remember a thing about it but you get to watch it!

--------

Back To The Future. Hokey but enjoyable. I get why people like it so much. It has so many details packed into it and Micheal J Fox is extremely charismatic (same with Christopher Lloyd). Product placement is extremely blatant. The mom subplot is extremely strange, I actually thought they were going to have Marty sleep with his mom due to the Futurama episode and erase his older brother/sister. Also the Marvin Berry thing was beyond lame and didn't need to be in there. The ending had so much tension. Gave it a 78/100 on Critcker.

--------

My list:

The Seven Samurai: I rented this one from Blockbuster Online a few years ago. Tried to watch it at 3 in the morning and fell asleep. Thought the picture looked lovely and I decided to wait for the HD-DVD Blu-Ray instead of holding up one of my BBO slots to watch the movie later.

The Great Dictator: I guess I'll make this my Charlie Chaplin slot until I run through the movies I have of his.

8 1/2: Mix the reasons for The Seven Samurai/The Seventh Seal (It sounds lovely but "deep" movies tend to intimidate me before I force myself to sit through them.) together and you'll have the reason why I haven't watched 8 1/2 yet.

*new* Head: I don't know how good this is suppose to be but I want to start digging into my America Lost And Found: The BBS Story Criterion boxset (I've only seen The Last Picture Show out of it)

Midnight Cowboy: I don't know much about this one besides it being the only X rated movie to win Best Picture.

The Maltese Falcon: Never got around to watching it. I've seen three Bogart movies so far (Treasure Of Sierra Madre was one of the greatest films I have ever seen, In A Lonely Place I liked, Casablanca I didn't) but I have never been a big noir fan.

El Topo: I was going to list The Holy Mountain but this one came first and I heard it is good to watch as a way to ease somebody into Alejandro Jodorowsky.

Black Narcissus: I actually imported this from the UK way before the American Criterion Blu-Ray release. I kind of forgot about it but watching Peeping Tom reminded me how I need to get off my rear end and watch it.

Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid: I'm still not a big western fan but I have been steamrolling through all of the greats in this thread. Been meaning to watch this one so I could read William Goldman's Adventures In The Screen Trade. A book I have also been putting off since at the end, it has the screenplay to this movie.

Solaris: I haven't seen any Andrei Tarkovsky yet.

Woodstock: No excuse for this one. I own it on Blu-Ray, I've watched some of the song outtakes but I've never sat down and watched the whole thing. The runtime always make me grab a different movie over this one.

Watched: The Seventh Seal (83/100), The Man With No Name Trilogy (79/100 - 80/100 - 79/100), Once Upon A Time In The West (79/100), Alien (69/100), The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy (70/100 - 67/100 - 69/100), Annie Hall (79/100), Lawrence Of Arabia (92/100), Dazed And Confused (67/100), The Third Man (86/100), Aguirre: The Wrath Of War (85/100), City Lights (88/100), Paths Of Glory (69/100), Back To The Future (78/100)

Wait, there's an X rated movie that won Best Picture?

I saw Rain Man, an 80s movie about an idiot savant and a "normal" guy. The movie is largely ruined by Cruise's mediocre performance. Honestly not much to say about this one, it wasn't bad, it just wasn't.. Anything in particular at all. 7.2

#11. Amélie A movie about a french girl which is supposedly very sweet. Oh boy.

#12. The Birds If nothing else came of my lukewarm reception of Psycho, it did get me to want to see more Hitchcock "classics" I've missed, if only to see wether they are as disappointing.

#13. The Great Escape Steve McQueen escapes (probably) from a prison camp. Not my favourite of plot lines, even with Steve.

No longer shameful: The Shawshank Redemption (9.0); The Good, The Bad & The Ugly (9.5); 12 Angry Men (8.5); Apocalypse Now (7.0); Singin' in the Rain (9.0); Schindler's List (9.0); Psycho(7.5); Rain Man (7.2)

Yeah although it isn't X like pornographic and was later given a R rating.

quote:

Upon initial review by the Motion Picture Association of America, Midnight Cowboy received a "Restricted" ("R") rating (Persons under 16 not admitted unless accompanied by parent or adult guardian). However, after consulting with a psychologist, executives at United Artists were told to accept an "X" rating (Persons under 17 will not be admitted) due to the homosexual frame of reference and its possible influence upon youngsters. The film was released with an X.

(...)

There was controversy from critics who felt the MPAA "X" rating for the film was too harsh. The MPAA later broadened the requirements for the "R" rating to allow more content, and in addition raised the age restriction from sixteen to seventeen. The film was later rated "R" for a reissue in 1971 with no edits made. The R rating for the film remains to this day.

Red Riding 1974 was pretty good. It was pretty and well-done, but I just couldn't get into it. It was miserably bleak and I guess that was the point, but I wasn't really feeling it on a gorgeous June day. There didn't seem to be much at all unique about it. Oh well. I may watch the sequels but honestly, probably not.

Hra Mormo, Citizen Kane.

Two Thousand Maniacs! Is this any good? I wasn't thrilled with Blood Feast.

Rapt Menilmontant kicked rear end so I guess it's worth giving another Kirsanoff a whirl.

penismightier, Grand Hotel is wonderful I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

The Thing with Two Heads was both a pleasant surprise and an underwhelming disappointment. The concept is one that can either make for a great thoughtful Sci-Fi film or a cheesy exploitation film, I was expecting the latter but instead got a mediocre, but not terrible, attempt at the former. The first half is actually pretty solid, all things considered, a great concept with decent execution, and acceptable production values. Nothing mindblowing, but the kind of thing that makes you think, this could have been great with a bigger budget and a little more thought. Then, a little more than halfway through, after we finally get the transplant it seems like the producers decided they weren't gonna have any of this plot or character development stuff so we get a tiresome chase scene and a quick wrap up with huge holes. In between we get at best 3 or 4 funny lines, but mostly it's still played straight. The tones don't match and it all just falters with a whimper. With such a great premise this outcome was a disappointment, but I still kind of liked it.

Thing with Two Heads is okay but Watermelon Man is basically the same movie but way better.

Peaceful Anarchy- I recommend "The One Armed Swordsman", but also want to say that if you like it in any way (even a little) you should check out the sequel which is so much better. Part 1 is like an origin story, while part 2 is when he's really mastered his skills.

I finally watched "Lawrence of Arabia", and thought it was pretty good. The movie is the very definition of "epic", and it was interesting. I'll admit to stupidity and say that I knew nothing about this story or Lawrence prior to the movie, so I had no idea what was coming (and for some reason I had thought the movie took place in the 1800s or so, so the more modern setting was not expected). Also the run time wasn't bad at all.

My new list:

1. 8 1/2:
Watched the first 5 minutes, and turned it off for some reason, I think I wasn't in the right mood that night.

2. The Lives of Others:
I have never heard of it before, but it appears to have a high rating on IMDB.

3. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid:
More Paul Newman

4. The Great Dictator:
Now that I've seen some Chaplin, this is one that always interested me.

5. To Kill a Mockingbird:
Honestly I don't know much about it other then that it's a movie that exists and is supposed to be good

6. The Elephant Man:
It's Karl Pilkington's favorite movie, which is enough reason for me to check it out sometime

7. In Bruges:
I know nothing about this, but it seems to be highly rated.

8. Network:
I seem to keep hearing about this lately, but don't know anything about it.

9. Ben Hur:
Another long epic I'm afraid of

10. The Treasure of Sierre Madre:
I like some Bogey, but never saw this one.

Already watched: Jaws, Scenes From a Marriage, The Searchers, Fanny and Alexander, Sawdust and Tinsel, Stagecoach, Silence of the Lambs, Modern Times, Do the Right Thing, Schindler's List, Mr Smith Goes to Washington, Magnolia, La Strada, Die Hard, Persona, Aliens, The Great Escape, Cool Hand Luke, 400 Blows, Lawrence of Arabia

Then you gonna love this one.

The Great Dictator is quite the brilliant movie. I knew the speech at the end, but it was the rest of the movie that surprised me in the good way. It was extremely funny, intelligent and tragic. I thought this would be two hours of a Jewish Barber being mistaken by HitlerHynkle but that only happens in the last 10 minutes of the movie. The description that it usually gets lumped cuts the movie short in my opinion.

Hope this lives up to your expectations!

Finished Lawrence of Arabia and I was summarily impressed. It was a beautiful movie, and didn't feel as long as it was. The score was amazing, the acting fantastic, the cinematography breath taking. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Here's my updated list*:

1. Barton Fink - I'm actually a pretty big fan of the Coen Brothers so how this got away from me, I don't know.

2. Mad Max. Here's something interesting. I didn't know this was three movies. I thought they were all one movie. So if this isn't the first one, let me know and I'll watch the first one instead.

3. Metropolis. I've never seen a silent film, at least not in it's entirety. This will be something new to experience.

4. The Seventh Seal. Have not one clue what this movie is about, who's in it, or who directs it, but it keeps popping up in everyone elses lists and the reviews people come back with are good, so I'm adding it.

5. The Deer Hunter. Don't know a lot about this one, just that it has a young Christopher Walken in it and there is an intense Russian roulette scene. But I hear it's good, so I'm adding it to the list.

6. The Kite Runner. I've heard nothing but amazement over this movie, but I really don't like the Middle East wars and I think this would just make me unable to appreciate the movie? I hope I'm wrong.

7. Singing in the Rain. I love musicals and I hear this is the one to beat them all so I'm a bit ashamed this has always passed my by.

8. My Neighbor Totoro Don't know too much about this one. I like the director and enjoyed Spirited Away, so I'm hoping this one will be good.

9. Rabbit Proof Fence. My dad has been trying to get me to see this one since he saw it, saying it's fantastic. Just never got around to it.

10. It Happened One Night. Heard it's a very good early romantic comedy? Also, I've only ever seen Mr. Gable in Gone With the Wind, so it would be nice to have more exposure to his other movies.

* Two movies have been sitting on this list since I first started this thing almost a year ago: Grosse Point Blank and The Usual Suspects. I've now removed them because I figure if no one has picked them now, they may not be worth seeing. I might add them back in a long way down the line though. We'll see.

Finished movies: Die Hard; Dr. Strangelove.; Chinatown; Citizen Kane; There Will Be Blood; Do The Right Thing; The Graduate; Rocky; The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly; A Streetcar Named Desire; Apocalypse Now; Children of a Lesser God; City of God; The Pianist; The Red Shoes; Eraserhead; Vertigo; Raging Bull; 2001: A Space Odyssey; Tombstone; Seven Samurai; 8 1/2; Dancer in the Dark; Lawrence of Arabia

I am the math man.

Bodnoirbabe, I think both Grosse Point Blank and The Usual Suspects are very good films and worth watching. I'd even rate them above half the stuff on your list, but they aren't must sees like most of what you've seen for this thread, or your next assignment Metropolis.

The One-Armed Swordsman was a really fun film with good fights and an interesting story. I don't see what about it makes it such a standout but it's good enough to solidify my desire to watch more Shaw Brothers films and check out Return of The One Armed Swordsman in the next few weeks.

Lagaan One of the big ones from contemporary Bollywood. Why is it 4 drat hours though?

Fat Girl From one fat girl Criterion to another.

Riget Time to add another miniseries I haven't seen. All I know is it's made by Lars von Trier.

Possession Not sure why I have this on my need to see list actually. Maybe someone here recommended it? Seems like it could be brilliant or terrible.

The Wind Will Carry Us The last Kiarostami movie I saw, Ten, really soured me on the guy, but considering I've liked his other features there's no reason not to give this a shot.

For the hell of it, here's what I've seen so far:

LA Confidential did live up to my expectations. Quite a good noir, if a bit action packed towards the end. There was something that did bother me: Exley just bangs Lynn. It felt that it came out of nowhere and a bit to artificial to just get the last third of the movie going. Maybe I just read the character wrong, it didn't feel right me. But everything else was great, could use maybe less Crowe and Basinger(She won a oscar for this? What the gently caress?), and more Spacey. Defiantly more Kevin Spacey. Either way I liked, it's no Chinatown but its good enough on it's own to standout.

Grand Hotel was very good, but I'm a sucker for pre-Code stuff. Joan Crawford was GORGEOUS! Who knew??

Electronico6, it's time for you to learn about The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

New list:

Two Thousand Maniacs! Is this any good? I wasn't thrilled with Blood Feast.

Rapt Menilmontant kicked rear end so I guess it's worth giving another Kirsanoff a whirl.

The Champ I do love my boxing movies.

Naked City Been watching, and ADORING, the TV show.

I Know Where I'm Going! Really gotta get to work on P&P.

The Ninth Configuration I keep getting real adamant about watching this, and then it fizzles out in like ten minutes.

Toto, Peppino e la malafemmina Italian comedy doesn't do it for me, but Terrence Malick of all people loves this one. Certainly worth a try.

Les rendez-vous d'Anna The only one in the Chantal Akerman Eclipse set I haven't gotten around to yet.

New: Red Beard You would not believe how long I've had this sitting around unviewed.

Barfly I'm a big Bukowski fan which, actually, is why I keep avoiding this.

penismightier, never heard of Rapt, but I liked Menilmontant a lot too, so maybe you can tell me if it's any good.

I was beginning to think no one would ever choose La grande guerra. Classic is maybe a little too strong for this but it's the best film I've seen in a month. A wonderful black comedy set during the first world war with two very enticing leads, some strong moments and great banter. At times I felt it was missing that extra something to make it truly stand out. It's harsh but never scathing, dark but never shockingly so, creative but not unique. Of course, in 1959 this would have been more impressive but it still packs a punch and I'm very glad I watched it. Certainly a hidden gem.

Updated list:

Plein soleil Clément is another director from whom I've seen one magnificent film and never got around to watching any others.

Un homme et une femme Don't know much about this, a romance of some sort.

Muerte de un ciclista Been wanting to watch more Spanish films, this seems to be near the top of the list of the ones I haven't watched.

The Last Command Another silent I need to get around to.

No, just looked it up. On the one hand John Ford comedy is not exactly an enticing proposition. On the other hand Edward G. Robinson and Jean Arthur in a screwball crime comedy does sound like fun. We'll see if I can get my hands on a copy.

It's a very weird outlier in the Ford canon. I wouldn't have any idea it was him except for the credits.

Let's see if you're right!

Enter The Dragon was largely entertaining. I was kind of surprised, it felt more like a James Bond film than your typical Kung-Fu fair. The film lacked the emotion that Lee was talking about at the beginning, but oh well, people get punched in the face and in the end it's just a fun movie. I really wish I could have watched this in a crowded theater at midnight though. The time flies by but maybe watching by myself didn't give me the full experience. Also, the final fight was very interesting to watch, dragged a little bit but the effect was very trippy.

#25 The Magnificent Seven - Might as well watch the Americanized version now. Plus I love Eli Wallach, Steve McQueen and Charles Bronson.

#31 Labyrinth - Is this a movie that had to be a part of your childhood to really love (such as The Goonies) or will I still enjoy it regardless? Either way, David Bowie.

#64 Man Bites Dog - I hear this is really, really violent. Am I gonna regret putting this here?

#65 The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo - Promised a friend I'd watch this eventually. This is the first one in the series, right?

#66 The Conversation - This is supposed to be right after Apocalypse Now and The Godfather for Coppola's best so let's have at it.

#67 Aliens - Forgot I haven't seen it. Update: Now going to just prepare for a completely different movie.

#68 Metropolis - Probably about time I watch this.

#69 Man On Wire - Been meaning to watch this for a good while.

#70 Peeping Tom - This looks cool.

#71 The 39 Steps - I have a good amount of Hitchcock to start making up for.

Seen so far:
Pan's Labyrinth, The Wild Bunch, The Warriors, Chinatown, Dr. Strangelove, American History X, Barton Fink, Apocalypse Now, Eraserhead, The Maltese Falcon, Annie Hall, Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?, Casablanca, M, Seven Samurai, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, The Godfather, The Seventh Seal, Mulholland Drive, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Silence Of The Lambs, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid, Wild Strawberries, High Fidelity, Goldfinger, The Bicycle Thief, The Thing, Bonnie And Clyde, There Will Be Blood, 8½, Spirited Away, The Big Sleep, A Fish Called Wanda, The Man Who Wasn't There, 12 Angry Men, The Elephant Man, Once Upon A Time In The West, Moon, The 400 Blows, Rosemary's Baby, City Of God, Dog Day Afternoon, Breathless, Saving Private Ryan, Network, Persona, Mean Streets, Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song, The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari, The Rules Of The Game, The Outlaw Josey Wales, The Killing, Punch-Drunk Love, Rebecca, La Strada, Bowling For Columbine, The Virgin Spring, Wild At Heart, Mad Max, Enter The Dragon

The only one I've seen off your list, but certainly one of my favorite action movies ever.

Platoon is nothing too new after watching a few similar movies about Vietnam, although it certainly isn't a bad film. The battle scenes were done really well and it never really got dull at all. Overall a good film.

New List:

1. Annie Hall - Never seen a Woody Allen movie.

2. To Kill a Mockingbird - I've seen a few bits but never the entire thing.

3. Nikita - Same director as Leon, all I know is it's action and has been recommended to me by my father (I love a good action movie).

4. Slumdog Millionaire - Most recent best picture movie I haven't seen. If I can watch it I would finally be able to argue why Wall-E deserved it! I have heard great things about this movie.

5. Rebecca - Hitchcock's best picture film. Like most everything else that's not recent on this list, I'm going in blind.

6. A Streetcar Named Desire - More Brando I haven't seen.

7. How to Train Your Dragon - Goon favorite. I guess I'm making this my animated slot.

8. City Lights - Highest top 250 movie I haven't seen and a nice reappearance of Chaplin.

9. Harvey - Know nothing other than it's another James Stewart movie that was well received. I've enjoyed everything I've seen him in so far.

10. Patton - One of the more shameful war movies I have yet to see.

What the gently caress, marioinblack, you've never seen a Woody Allen movie? Let's fix that with Annie Hall.

Vamos a matar, compañeros was no Great Silence or Django, but it was still a wonderfully enjoyable Spaghetti Western. Franco Nero was great, but I was actually more impressed by Tomas Milian and the small role by Jack Palance. Lots of creative gunfights and revolutionary spirit, although the violence/non-violence thematic isn't all that well executed, but that doesn't matter much.

Well that's why I'm here. I'm amazed after watching so many great movies this past year that there is still a deep deep well of great movies I haven't seen. I've never really grown up watching older movies outside of 80s action and a few others. Not only has this thread taught me I knew nothing about movies, but I've learned so much about different actors and directing styles. I wish I could describe my experiences with these movies better, I don't think I've watched a film I would consider poor so far as I have them all rated above average.

This is by far and away the best thread I've encountered on SA.

Though I'll admit, I don't think I "got" the movie. In the sense by the end of the movie I don't get what Ford was trying to say with this movie. There was a lot of subtle criticism to a couple of subjects, like racism but what's the bigger picture? I though the movie was going to end up on "The educated man trumps the savage and the lawless" but Stewart's character in the end resorts to the gun. Maybe it's the irony of it all I dunno...

Either way I enjoyed the movie cause of Jimmy Stewart, Lee Marvin and the great B&W cinematography.

The Asphalt Jungle Cause my list doesn't have enough Noir/Crime movies!

Stray Dog Another Kurosawa Noir.

Cape Fear I did not care much for the Scorsese remake. Hoping this will be better.

Strangers on a Train CSI did a remake of this episode of sorts. It was terrible.

The French Connection Only know the car chase scene.

The King Of Comedy Scorsese's overlooked gem?

Bonnie and Clyde Been avoiding watching this for some reason.

Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan KHAA-no not doing that joke.

Django The Italian Western kind now.

A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies Martin Scorsese talks about cinema for 4 hours.

You got it.

I don't entirely agree with this review, but it's a great starting point for thinking about it:

http://uashome.alaska.edu/~dfgriffin/website/libertyvalance.htm

"That was until Liberty Valance, anyway, in which Ford finally prints the facts. Godard, of course, said that the greatest form of film criticism is to simply make another movie, and if we didn’t know that the man responsible for this film was John Ford, it would be tempting to construe it as a cutting denigration of the great director’s legacy."

You're looking for a simple moral in a complex movie, by the way.

Stoddard’s triumph, however, is ironic. He will go on to a glorious political career on the strength of words, the publicity that his vanity has won him, that he is “the man who shot Liberty Valance,” words that in the sense intended, are in fact not true. But no matter. Stoddard has made himself the tool of words; and in place of his apron gets a spiffy suit.
Doniphon, through the “letter” of the law, has absolved Stoddard of conscience pangs just enough for his ambition to trample his scruples. Here Stoddard exercises free will: he lies. He scoots back into the convention hall and goes on to fame and power on the strength of a lie; goes on too to get Hallie, thus robbing Tom.

I wasn't expecting The Furies to be what it was. What it was was awesome. Almost no character in this movie had redeeming qualities. It was entertaining basically to see people back stab each other for two hours over this piece of property, jealousies (the father-daughter relationship was kind of disturbing), and what they felt was rightfully theirs. You almost wish every character would get what was coming to them in the end. I loved it.

1) Carrie- still working through the horror list
2) The Asphalt Jungle- love those heist films
3) Metropolis- it's time I saw this
4) Battleship Potemkin- I've only seen silent comedies and it's time to expand my horizons. This seems like essential viewing
5) It's A Wonderful Life- always avoided it because I thought it seemed cheesy, but I keep hearing good things
6) Lady Vengeance- hear this is better than Old Boy
7) Captain Blood- let's have some fun
8) Pale Flower- this looks interesting
9) Sherlock Jr.- let's keep the Keaton going
10) Winchester '73- let's watch some more Anthony Mann
