Holy gently caress. I am kind of scared at the moment because my iTunes is throwing me the "iTunes cannot read the contents of decypher's iPhone. Go to the summary tab and and click restore while simultaneously bending over to be hosed in the rear end in a top hat," error. I found an article via google which stated finding and deleting the iTunesDB file on your iTunes will fix the problem. I did that, and it didn't work! Anyone here have any experience with such an error? iPhone 3GS running 4.3.3 jailbreak via redsn0w. edit: SOLVED Well I'll be hosed harder than an antelope. Deleting the iTunesCDB file in the same directory worked for me. Problem solved....strange though. Never had this problem before. Oh well. My guess is it was possibly a permissions issue???? edit2: I remember now what probably hosed everything up. It was this loving MewSeek Pro application I bought which lets you download music. That's fine. It was the feature I tried which supposedly added the song you downloaded into your iPod library right there from the phone so you don't have to sync. Well, it didn't work. And this is the first time I plugged the phone into the computer since trying that app. So, that musta corrupted my iPod database or some file read by iTunes when you first plug it in. decypher fucked around with this message at 03:47 on Jun 7, 2011 |

Is jailbreaking on 4.3.3 possible at the moment? I downloaded the 4.3.2 ipsw (latest listed on jailbreakmatrix) and redsnow to update my friends phone yesterday but apple wouldn't verify the update (he's traditionally run stock, so no hashes are saved for his phone)

Yes, the current redsn0w release will JB 4.3.3.

Not that you weren't saying this eames (and I think you knew this), but for others out there that don't know. Moving forward, all iOS versions can be jailbroken for any current device EXCEPT the iPad2. All of them have a bootrom exploit and the bootrom isn't updated (hence the name ROM). This allows for arbitrary code execution and a way to get their payload in there and root the device. The big questions now are the iPad2 jailbreak and a (current) baseband unlock as we have no clue how either of those are going.

So I'm taking the dive. I don't really have anything to do today and since I'm jailbroken and my SHSH's are saved I can downgrade back to 4.3 if need be. Or maybe I can't...either way I don't care that much. Currently downloading the iOS5 ipsw (600mg!!) and backing up my phone. I'll let you know how it goes and if it's worth playing around with or waiting.

A lot of people take My3G or 3G Unrestrictor for granted when they jailbreak and then forget about it even being turned on (unlimited data HEH) - but this is also a big reason to jailbreak still.

On top of that is SBSettings. I really only use it for Airplane mode, bluetooth, and wifi but still...that's almost a full row. Plus, when I'm doing development I use it to clear the syslog a shitton. Oh well.... Considering there is a jailbreak, I'll probably still do it. There's a few minor tweaks I'd still like to have.

Ok, with iOS 5.0 installed, I immediately starting missing these things: - MyWi (used with my iPad 2 and Nook Color). - ByteFont's Ubuntu font. - Barrel's "Inside Cube" transition. - BiteSMS's improved chat client. Simple things like "touch the chat part to hide the keyboard" are just brilliant compared to what happens by default (hint: nothing). I'm so use to all of those, going without them is like using someone else's yucky phone. I know a tethered jailbreak is possible (i0n1c says the untether from 4.3.x has been patched), but since the phone has locked on me once since installing the beta, I'm assuming I'm going to end up someplace where I need to reboot. And of course, the memory situation on my 3GS with 5.0 may be more painful than it was in 4.3.x. I'm not sure yet, it could just be an "unoptimized beta" issue. Or maybe I just need to turn off notifications to get some speed back. I keep thinking that I'll just go back to 4.1 on my 3GS. It had the best performance of the 4.x releases.

So one thing I've always wondered. If your jailbroken data is saved when you restore and all you have to do is reinstall the jb apps, doesn't that mean there could be a bunch of junk floating around in the filesystem? All I really use is SBSettings and I just updated to 4.3.3 from 4.3.2, so it occurred to me that there could be years of poo poo clogging up my iPhone from jb apps I no longer use.

That stuff is all left behind, but unless you were doing something unusual like carrying aroud huge video files it probably isn't taking up a huge amount of space. The "Other" category in iTunes is where all the jailbreak stuff gets counted. But not all of "Other" is JB stuff. If you wanted to you could probably get rid of most of it by manually uninstalling everything that you can from Cydia before doing the update where you don't want to JB.

International calling? what's that? I can't hear you over my international video chat/facetime calls with my3g enabled on both ends Seriously I think I've saved a bunch of money by using this feature alone, and it's even more convenient than other voip stuff as it's tied to the phone app. Even if your coverage is a bit slow or spotty, pressing the home button and turn facetime into a audio-only call will smooth things out a lot more. This plus iMessage will save the user a lot of money. DaNzA fucked around with this message at 09:51 on Jun 8, 2011 |

I'm tearing my hair out trying to get Wi-Fi Sync to work properly. I upgraded my iPad 1 to 4.3.3 ( from 4.2.1 ) using the latest redsn0w yesterday, in the process of getting everything back in order. I'm on my second round of uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes, I foolishly upgraded to 10.2, tried going back to 10.0.54 and am now installing 10.1.1. Does Wi-F Sync even work on 4.3.3? I tried googling but it's an absolute mess of results.

I literally cannot stand using the iPhone without all the jailbreak features I've become accustomed to over the years. Not only for most of those apps mentioned above (biteSMS, SBSettings), but things like Activator and small stuff like Five Icon Dock/Rows, FolderEnhancer, SwitcherMod, having ssh access to customize little things here and there.. I wouldn't use the iPhone if I didn't have access to all of these comforts and conveniences. Just tried iOS 5 now and I couldn't take more than 20 minutes of feeling so restricted before I switched back.

I've been trying to use Backgrounder to tame the memory usage on my 3GS. I leave on native multitasking, but by default most apps have "Fast App Switching" disabled. All the apps I like to keep open (Notes, Safari, etc) stay open. Stuff like games close immediately. Anything that *needs* to run in the background (Pandora, etc) is left alone. This keeps my memory mostly clear, and I haven't been getting any slowdown that usually comes when my device runs out of RAM and iOS struggles to close background apps everytime I open something. It seems like a great thing - unfortunately, it says "The developer no longer has time to properly support this project." on the Cydia page. The last update was in April (which isn't so bad), but I was hoping something like this gets updated to work in future versions of iOS, such as 5.0. It's really helpful on low-RAM devices (anything not an iPad 2 or iPhone 4).

Is there any way to make it so I can go into airplane mode and still keep GPS on? I will be traveling overseas to Europe in a few weeks. Last time I kept my phone on airplane mode and used it as a wifi device only the entire trip. But, this time I purchased the app CityMaps 2Go, which uses GPS to navigate their maps. Dev's website says to turn off Data Roaming and not go into airplane mode. But, won't I still get texts messages? I have unlimited on AT&T, but I think I still get hit with fees overseas? I get a lot of text messages and I don't want to get hit with international fees. I'm trying to warn people not to text me but I'm sure I'll still get some.

I've never been charged for receiving. It's terribly expensive to send though. Basically, just disable international data roaming in the settings and you should be good to go. Here's my initial feedback of iOS 5, specifically how it compares to jailbreaking...otherwise I wouldn't post in this thread. Notification Center is great but there's really 2 different notification groupings: 1 for lock screen notifications and one for the regular notifications. Lock screen notifications only show up on the lock screen while it is locked that time. As soon as you unlock it, all notifications that you got while it was locked are dismissed, regardless if you actually did dismiss them. They all stay in the notification center. The second you lock your screen back, the notifications are gone. Clearing notifications only clears them from the notification center and not the actual notification. For instance, if you get a text message and hit the "x" by it in the notification center, the badge is still beside the iMessages application. Widgets are only in Notification Center and not the lock screen. A lot of these I'm comparing to LockInfo and I definitely miss the functionality but this is more of a comparison with what the jb scene has done vs. what apple has implemented. I actually like the native notifications but it's just inconsistent and doesn't really provide the functionality I want. Something like NotificationCenter+ seems like it may need be in the works (and as soon as they release a public JB I'm going to start looking into it).

Thanks for the post. LockInfo is a lifesaver for me, but I always try to prefer the stock apps. Sounds like there's just enough missing to annoy me though, and I'm probably going to wait around for the jailbreak options.

I didn't want to have to call and cancle and miss any important texts.

Disabling data roaming disables web access from any app including mail. Also, calling over wifi using Talkaton + GV is very useful.

Also, no way to dismiss notifications on the lock screen other than simply unlocking. Regardless, based on how it handles other notifications It wouldn't actually dismiss them. Also, holy crap is the new safari buggy as hell. This post took forever because the second I got out of the text area it froze. Froze a bunch with autocomplete.
