Are there any good bands still churning out that lo-fi, energetic, twee pop that was so popular in the early 90s? Stuff like Tiger Trap, Tullycraft, and Bunnygrunt - not so much fuzzy, shoegazy, Black Tambourineesque stuff.

Well, I dunno about lo-fi, I guess I can't ever tell when bands use lo-fi as an intentional aesthetic and when it's incidental, since I've no attachment to it. But anyway, Allo Darlin. Listen to them. They're the best. And beyond that, maybe stuff on the How Does It Feel To Be Loved label, they've put out some good stuff and their site has loads of links to bands and things. Fortuna Pop too, obviously.

Thanks for the recommendations, guys, already checked out a few. Fairport Convention in particular is fan-loving-tastic. Already moved on to another obsession, though: Give me acoustic indie rock along the lines of R.E.M.'s Automatic for the People or Nirvana's Unplugged album. They're not current at all - they haven't been together since like 1991 - but I assume you've already checked out Beat Happening? If you haven't, do so right now. One of the best bands of the 80s.

I really, really like Ali Farka Toure and most any other Malian blues that I've heard. Someone recently told me that while Mali music was a big root of delta blues, Nigerian music was a big root of the more notey, finerpicky Appalachia/Carolina blues (Rev Gary Davis was cited as an american example). Any recommendations of Nigerian blues music?

Does this make sense? you're probably looking for K.C. Accidental, as this is the band Broken Social Scene grew from and the sound of KCA is evident in most of their post-rockish songs. Besides that the only similar band I can think of is Dirty Three.

Some good solid labels are 12k, Touch, Line, Room40, Type, just browse around on youtube and you'll probably find a bunch of stuff related to the vids I posted that you'll also enjoy. edit: Maybe even dub techno stuff, like anything Moritz Von Oswald or Rod Modell are involved in. This is a huge category, but I'm just going to mention out a few of my favourites. I might also check out the ones you mentioned Tito Puente and Celia Cruz are awesome mambo/salsa type musicians. Also if you want some weirder stuff, Lhasa de Sela (I only know the album La Llorona) is sort of like a latin female rain-dogs-era Tom Waits, but without the gravel in the voice?

This is pretty much like saying hey dudes recommend me some bands that sing in English. You've got Argentinian ska, rock en español, rumba and salsa listed here. Yeah some of these have similar stylistic influences but it's still a pretty huge range. I'd recommend youtubing these styles to see what else sounds like what you like and why you like it. I know poo poo all about latin rock so I can't really help you there. For salsa groups like Buena Vista you can take a jazz session players approach. Look up some of the solo albums of members (the Ibrahim Ferrer and Rubén González records are great) and then look up who played on those, etc. To confuse you further by adding more genres to this, check out Cumbia: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHlS-3bvDHY Y Ranchera (dude has sold 65 million albums): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0peANtDLVdI

May I recommend, to start, the Doc Watson / Clarence Ashley 2-cd smithsonian folkways collection. You might also like old ragtime/country blues. Also I really like the ones you posted, thanks.

I've recently started watching The Boondocks and am surprised with the awesome types of music in the show. They even have MF DOOM and Madvillain, which are some of my favorite hip-hop acts. On a recent episode they were playing a beat which incorporated chinese instruments into it, and I was instantly hooked. I've been desperately trying to find some more hip-hop infused with chinese instruments. Any ideas?

Not sure if this is the thread to ask but i can't seem to find the "Where do i start with X" thread. I want to buy my Dad a couple of those Remastered Beatles albums from a couple of years ago (they are good yeah?) but i shamefully know nothing about the Beatles. What are generally considered the "good" Beatles albums? I know this is highly subjective but i'll try to narrow his tastes. He seems like a bit of a boring man so probably wouldn't like much of the hippy/LSD induced/experimental songs/albums. I know for a fact he owns the Sgt Pepper album. I think he has the rest of their stuff on copied cassettes. He also owns that "Number 1's" album from a few years back. So yeah, i'm probably looking for the albums that are a bit more mainstream, but maybe the more earnest/rockier albums as opposed to the uber-hippy albums or the early/bland/pop/boy band type stuff.
