Besides the fact that he doesn't use digits in his handle (comex), he's actually been one of the most straightforward and helpful jailbreak developers in the scene, and he's already dropped two great jailbreaks with a lot of potential for the iPad2 one as well. He's talented, and hasn't actually done anything to deserve the reputation you're trying to give him here.

Yeah, Spirit and then JailbreakMe were my first jailbreaks, and they were both incredibly easy. The subsequent jailbreaks haven't been difficult, but they weren't nearly as straightforward. Comex spoiled me with those two. I've kinda tuned out all the scene drama over the past six to eight months with this stuff, but I don't remember Comex ever being bad about it.

More like a replacement for/aborted baby of SBSettings and LockInfo. I'm just happy we don't have to use LockInfo anymore.

So this is the second time I've been screwed over by iOS devs ;)

Press button to turn on phone, swipe to unlock, swipe down to check mail list (if you have some sort of jailbreak that enables mail info on the notification screen).

Hell at that point it'd be just as quick to open the mail app anyway.

The point of lockinfo is to display various important informations on the lock screen of the phone so that it's quickly visible at a glance without having to unlock the phone.

Those of you saying that the notification center will finally get rid of you using LockInfo haven't used Notification Center.

Notification Center is a piss poor replacement of the functionality that LockInfo gives you. You can't see constant updates on the lock screen with notification center, only what you get while the phone is locked at that time. You can't bring down the actual notification center screen from the lock screen, only show lock notifications (no widgets, like twitter or calendar). The notifications go away. Notification center also doesn't actually clear notifications/badges. You actually have to open the application to do that.

Personally, I like the look/feel of the new notification center but it's implementation is about as bad as modal pop-ups. It's useless in it's current form, but a lot of that I expect is because it is a beta. At least I hope so because if not, I don't see how anyone thought that solves the notification problem.

A: Sadly, probably Twitter. Some of the major contributors include @MuscleNerd, @comex, @saurik, @chpwn, @i0n1c, @rpetrich, and @iphone_dev. Sources outside of Twitter include ModMyi, Redmond Pie, the iPhone Dev-Team Blog, and various other gadget sites.

Also, it is almost a 100% guarantee that there will NOT be an iPad 2 jailbreak released BEFORE iOS5 comes out. Now that they have a general release date for iOS5, why would they waste a userland kernel exploit when they could possibly wait.

This is pure speculation but that's pretty much on-par with what they've done in the past. The only time they don't wait is when there's a minor/point release of iOS coming up with no real date. iOS 5 is pretty major and I don't think they'd want to waste a userland exploit when it could mean that there would be an untether available for ALL devices on basically the release day of iOS 5.

Plus...my first gen iPad is jailbroken...you're not missing much.

My girlfriend got an iPhone 4, and gave me her old 3G, except it's for a different carrier than mine.

I'm on windows 7, trying to jailbreak it using redsn0w 0.9.6rc16 and I need to use the iPad firmware in order to allow me to unlock the phone and use it on my carrier.

When I try doing this by checking the option for "Install iPad baseband" and "Install Cydia" the program crashes when downloading the iPad baseband and can't finish. I understand through this page that I can't do Cydia and the iPad baseband at the same time. So, which should I install first?

I was able to install the jailbreak with cydia fine on it's own before and everything was fine, I could do everything but use my SIM card to connect to my network. I did a fresh restore and tried installing just the iPad baseband, and all that did was cause it to hang when booting up, and now I get the unable to restore error (1015) and I appear to be stuck in recovery mode, even after using tinyumbrella to attempt to fix the error.

I feel I'm in way over my head, and I would appreciate some advice.

Installing the iPad baseband on your iphone is a horrible, terrible idea. For one, it completely invalidates your warranty (or applecare or whatever), two it means you can never do a restore to stock firmware in itunes, and three it'll probably cause some weird issues with your phone.

edit: Just re-read your post, you can try using iReb (http://ih8sn0w.com/index.php/products/view/ireb.snow) to kick it out of recovery mode

If iReb doesn't work you'll have to restore to a custom IPSW because your baseband is already likely at 06.15, you'll need to use sn0wbreeze or redsn0w to create an IPSW that you can shift-restore to

I downloaded a custom IPSW firmware from here.

Would this be something I could use to restore it?

I'm not worried about warranty or applecare, and they wanted $50 to unlock the phone, which I didn't really want to pay. That's why I went this route to unlock the phone. Everything made it out to be a fairly simple thing to do, clearly I was mistaken.

Dude you are making a really bad mistake. If you can't figure out how to do this on your own to start with you shouldn't mess with it. Not only as it was said before it will mess up your phone with no way to go back you also will have to jump through hoops to update or restore it.

If you have the option to legitly unlock it do that and save yourself a ton of trouble and a hosed up phone.

Geez you guys, he's talking about a 3g, that he needs to unlock on a different network. The value of the phone is mayb $50, and if he can't use it it's less than that. Who cares if it can't be updated, and y'all are seriously worried about a warranty on a 3g? :wtf:

TBH, the iPad baseband unlock on a 3G is fine, and it's the only model I'd recommend it on. It doesn't even get iOS updates anymore, so it's basically a permanent unlock, and not a bad travel phone.

I've been out of the jailbreak loop for a long while. I have a jailbroken iPhone 4 (NOT unlocked) at 4.2.1.

I wanted to reformat my phone and be a bit more harsh on what apps I put on this thing, and thought this week would be a good day to do it. Will it be easy for me to stay on this firmware, or go on whatever firmware is the newest and also able to be jailbroken, and will me downloading the newest iTunes do anything bad?

Should I just follow jailbreakmatrix's guide and I'll be good, or has something new happened recently that will screw me up?

Thanks a lot guys.

e: So update to 4.3.3 stock, set up as new phone, then jailbreak using the dev team blog's instructions and I'm good?

Yep. Just make sure when you're running redsn0w you run it as an admin in XP compatibility mode if in Windows.

You used to need to set the CPU affinity to 1 if you had a multi-core but not anymore.

Also, iTunes version doesn't matter. I did it with iTunes 10.5 beta last night, although this beta is a piece of poo poo.

Sorry to butt in on the iOS5 talk but I have a quick problem with restoring my iphone (I had a problem last time and posted it but I pretty much bricked my phone and got a replacement at an Apple Store). So I jailbroke my phone again and it was working fine but something got weird with Cydia and all my packages and repositories went away and everything is blank and it's kind of weird now. So I thought it would be a good opportunity to upgrade my 3GS to 4.3.3 and rejailbreak. However I can't seem to restore my phone. When I try to restore and update, it gives me an error 3194. I've tried DFU mode and restore too but it gives me the same error. It happens when the bar says verifying iphone restore with apple. I'm already using the SHSH blobs with Cydia or something (I added the 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com line on the bottom of the host file) but it still doesn't work. I've also tried doing it after deleting that line but I get the same error. I also tried restoring it with the 4.2.1 ispw but I get the exact same error. Any advice?
