I'm almost positive I had my D3 SMC modem hooked up to a 100Mbps port and I still had channel bonding (blue light on the modem was lit up). GigE stuff is dirt cheap and any good router has GigE on it anyway.

Still, at this point I now wish Rogers was offering something similar to the Shaw plans.

Yeah that just seems BS. The LAN speed should be auto-negotiated on its own side and completely separated from the channel bonding stuff. The modem should sync even with the LAN cable unplugged. What if you plug in a 10Mb ethernet? modem falls back to DOCSIS 1.0?

Same sort of thing happened to me with Teksavvy/Bell when I moved awhile ago, I eventually had to get Cogeco instead. Then out of the blue I got like $200 in bills from Teksavvy that were "diagnostic charges" and poo poo from Bell visits that never happened, not on my end or theirs. Teksavvy ended up backing down after doing an "investigation" that took another 3 months to come to its conclusion. I think word has gone out at Bell to basically screw with resellers as much as possible within the confines of the tariffs. So I'm stuck with lovely, expensive Cogeco until Teksavvy comes to Cogecoland which is probably never at this point because the TPIA contractual terms are so ancient that Cogeco is using them like a loophole.

Its so tempting to switch to Shaw @ 100Mbps...I would be paying double what I'm paying right now, and I would be switching away from my local independent ISP that has treated me well, but I'm getting about 8Mbps now. WHAT DO I DO?? (plus I have trouble trusting Shaw)

Considering most web servers are running on a 100mbit port for the entire box, you're not going to get that throughput aside from CDN networks and the largest web sites. (Facebook, Google etc.)

Yeah I get that. I'm more thinking about in terms of Newsgroups - will that bandwidth be sustained, or is it like the Shaw at my work connection which bursts high at the start, but then falls into a stable 900k/s

I believe if you're using a newsgroup, you can max out your connection unless it's restricted somewhere down the line. You can increase the number of threads too so I would assume you can max it out. That would be amazing seeing 12MB/s.

I managed to get a solid 11.5MB/s downloading the latest Slackware ISO, which is mentioned ..somewhere on the uTorrent page? As a good test, since it's centrally seeded and has lots of seeders all the time. It's a pretty nice feeling. I was uploading at almost 500kb/s too.

I just switched to Teksavvy recently but I'm being tempted to go back to Shaw with the promises of 100Mbps internet for only slightly more than what I pay now (since I already have cable).

It's something that TekSavvy wants figured out so they can provide faster internet. Right now, the small ISPs who wholesale are limited. My boss is the director of G&PR so she's been on the road for the last while, hitting up the Conservative Convention and other trips in Ottawa and Banff to make the case for TekSavvy and everything we're fighting for. So yeah, I haven't heard anything concrete yet unlike VoIP but I do know that we paid close attention to what Shaw did and I don't doubt once more gets figured out about UBB and how much our speeds get increased to, they will get increased.

It would be nice to know if Teksavvy has a plan in general when it comes to all Cogeco controlled territories or if they're just basically screwed due to the tariff. Rocky said something awhile ago about how the tariff was restricting them but didn't mention if they planned to address that with the CRTC at all.

Fun alternative quote for your database (sorry, guys): I'm on Teksavvy and moved from the unlimited to the 300GB/month plan. I realized in vnstat2 that the household was using less than 300GB per month and we're not even being very conservative with our usage. HD downloads, steam usage, etc. However... we would be going over if my housemate wasn't a satellite TV subscriber with a DVR as well. That accounts for two people not using the Internet much. I think each person in the house needs about 50-60GB each if there wasn't a TV subscription, so caps can gargle my balls. Fake edit: Put that last line in your Db too.

I originally applied to just be a temporary part time CSR and I was instead moved into a more suitable position on my first shift. If you laid out your experience as a network engineer and something was open you'd have a great shot. Just remember you would have to move to Chatham. It's probably the biggest drawback to the job.
