The reason why so many networks are going for safe stuff like reality shows are because they're cheap to make and so investors can be reassured, but Lucas was always going to self-fund the live action show anyway. Also I think the slew of recent well written shows like Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, etc etc, would contest McCallum's notion that quality TV is dying out. Then again, he is Rick McCallum who lives in his own little world. As for the premise of the show from that interview, I actually think it sounds awesome. A mix of political and crime drama in the Star Wars universe? Assuming it's well written, sign me up. That was what Coruscant Nights was billed as being and I still wish it went that route instead.

Wouldn't any cable network be extremely interested in a serious Star Wars live action series? I guess Lucas wants complete control, so maybe that's keeping them from getting a deal with a network. The idea as laid out by McCallum actually sounds interesting. Going with the rise of the Empire instead of Jedi stuff (which would have to be about Obi-Wan or Yoda, unless they start bringing out other Jedi, which of course is a distinct possibility) at least brings us closer to the OT in terms of content and atmosphere. I would love to see a well-written Star Wars show aimed at adults. It all depends on how deeply involved Lucas is going to be, obviously. If he cedes just a little control to writers and directors with genuine talent, it could be decent. I'm not getting my hopes up, though. They've been talking about it for years now, but there haven't been any definitive signs that it's happening any time soon.

The criminal aspects of the show make sense, given that pretty much the only solid piece of plot info so far is that Boba Fett is going to be in it.

Speaking of the live-action show, the first screenwriter attached to it has been identified: http://www.denofgeek.com/television/941379/exclusive_writer_for_star_wars_tv_show_revealed.html It's Matthew Graham, best known as the creator of Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes.

Going as a guy who only played like 10 minutes of a beta or a demo or something, but kinda followed the game off and on because I'm a nerd shutup, Basically, the original Star Wars Galaxies was sort of...lacklustre. It was put out by Sony Online Entertainment, who made Everquest, the original #1 MMORPG. SW:G was very...EQ-like in its concepts and rationale. For example, the path to become the Jedi character class was convuluted and an incredible timesink for a player. If I'm remembering right, once you became flagged as a Jedi, your character could also be perma-killed. Combat and such was clunky and awkward, and it wasn't really the game's strong point. What did end up evolving was the game's crafting and merchant systems. Sometimes horrifyingly so (there were some screenshots in the last Star Wars megathread that were basically some sort of bizarre Star Wars fetishists bargain-o-rama center, for example.) I never really got this poo poo, but if you read Penny Arcade, Star Wars Galaxies was very 'Tycho friendly' in terms of having 'alternate' methods of advancing your character rather than shooting a million womp rats in Beggar's Canyon. If you wanted to sell Bothan-fur lined dildos in Mos Eisley, welp. Some people really like this sort of thing, to different degrees. Even in games like World of Warcraft, there are folk who try and control the local economies and make poo poo loads of money. Others are just in it for the 'roleplaying' efforts. I guess being an intergalactic purveyor of baskets or water basins is what some folks dream of. Anyway, with WoW's subsequent explosion and curbstomping of every other MMO on the market, a lot of 'competitors' adjusted their game to be more like WoW. EQ and FFXI become less games where you signed your life away in some sort of masochistic endeavour and adopted some WoW elements, like making it easier to solo poo poo or making EXP for your characters easier to obtain. SW:G tried to make the game more action packed and BIFF! POW! BANG! exciting for players. The only real big overhaul that I recall was making it so that you could make a Jedi character without having to run your dick through a meat grinder. With the 'core' group of people left playing that game, who liked being a moisture farmer or a craftsman or whatever being told that there game was becoming more action savvy, well, they were cranky about it. That was way too many loving words devoted to a game I never played. Yikes. Also, my favorite thing about SW:G was when players started protesting some bullshit in the game (I think it was server downtime/connectivity issues) and started a mass in-game protest. SOE's response? They mass-teleported characters into deep space.

SWG's shutdown is absolutely about LucasArts wanting to ensue maximum success for The Old Republic. There were rumors from months ago that LA was going to make this move. It's a shame they're closing SWG ten days before Christmas, though, I always liked the ridiculous SWG Life Day event. Have a heart, LucasArts! That article did remind me that the Clone Wars Adventures game exists, though. Has anyone here actually played it, or have any information on how many players it does get? I always assumed it was a blatant cash-grab attempt by LA that will close the minute the show ends.

That's kind of sad. I had some good times in SWG, but pulling the plug was pretty inevitable with TOR coming out.

"X-Wing" is a nine-book series, the first four of which (Rogue Squadron, Wedge's Gamble, The Krytos Trap, and The Bacta War) are specifically about Rogue Squadron. Then the next three are by a different author and about a different squadron. You should pick those up, too.
