Well I picked up new u-joints for my front wheels today. Going to give it a shot tomorrow. I never did them before but it seems simple and straightforward enough from what I read in the FSM and this picture guide I found online. Are the bolts holding the wheel hub on 1" or are they bigger?

It was pretty cool though, I online ordered them for in-store pick up but when I got there they only had the one u-joint in stock. The parts guy gave me the upgraded super duty pair for no extra cost. I only paid for the cheapest ones they had. I win!

Did you see Regis this morning?

I have a very very slow drip coming from the front axle. Crawled under this morning to discover that the bottom most bolt that keeps the cover on is missing...and also where the drip is coming from. Where do I get said bolt and do I need to torque it?

It's an 01 XJ with a Dana 30 for the front axle.

Pull one from the top edge, go to a hardware store, buy one that matches. It's not a highly stressed bolt so you don't have to get grade 8.

There is a torque spec for that but I don't know what it is. Not very high though.

25 ft-lb on the Dana 30 bolts, but its not that big of a deal. Just make sure their snug but not squeezing the gasket material out.

I may have had a moment of feeling horribly over my head today when I removed the head from my 2.2L 4-cylinder L-head and found 2 of the pistons apparently seized with rust. I guess there's no turning back now.

Well, gently caress. Turns out that the mounting spots for the liftgate studs on the XJ are really just a nut welded to the inside of the body. Unfortunately, there is no way to get to it to weld it back on when you inevitably break the lovely little factory spot welds because of how the stupid Jeep was assembled. Ended up just MIG welding the gently caress out of the stud.

In other news, 4.0L injector swap has been added to the list of things.

I rode in one not long ago. It was comfortable, but unless you're going to do a lot of off-road, I'd probably look into a RAV-4 instead.

I just looked at that thread, there hasn't been turning back in a while. Why don't you get a repro tub?

My Jeep drives so much nicer now that I replaced the front wheel u joints. Everything went smoothly for the most part, but holy gently caress was it hard to get the old joints out. Had to use lots of penetrating oil, the propane torch and my big rear end hammer. Lots of beer too.

Looked into it- the cheapest one I could find was:

http://www.xtremeterrain.com/steelbodytubfor1942-45willysmbfrom3-1-1942.aspx

Not technically a 2A tub but it would work. $2281 with free shipping. It's still a bit more than I would want to spend on a tub. That said, I feel that I can safely work on the frame and getting the engine going for now and worry about the logistics of getting a good body later.

I helped a friend do some work on his SJ yesterday. It started its day out like this:

But then we drank a case of beer and this part fell off:

We couldn't figure out how to get it back on, so it looks like this now:

It still needs a ton of finishing work, and we need to figure out some kind of bikini-top for when it rains.

What should I get?

You can pick up EFI/high pressure line clamps at any auto store. They are the type with a short bolt/nut as the clamping mechanism, rather than the typical worm gear clamps used on low pressure lines such as the cooling system.

Can anyone suggest a decent seller for used tires? I want to try a set of 265/75/16 before I go for new ones and see if that will be big enough. It's an 05 TJ unlimited with moto metal 951 wheels. I haven't had great luck locally, but I really don't want to pay shipping either.

Ebay is ok, but if you know specific vendors it would help greatly.

How quickly are people who are skilled at it able to put a stock jeep top up typically? I've only done it a few times so tonight it still took me about 10 minutes to get the top up, the soft doors in, quarters installed, and then rear window installed. I'm hoping with skill i can get it under 5 minutes.

1) The top I have for the jeep is the factory top, not a supertop, which is MUCH more frustrating to put up. The supertop isn't accurate to the jeep, so I can't have it!
2) I just want something to throw on in less than 5 minutes when I park for work or when the jeep is in the garage so it doesn't get filled with saw dust.

I had a supertop originally, and it was awesome. But it had to go.

true the supertop is harder to put up- what I was getting at is that I dont consider it hard.

I don't know what you mean about it not being "accurate". Mine was made for (and thus correct for) my range of years. As long as you don't go out and buy a JK top you should be fine.

I'm assuming that the light bar and windshield frame have a gap between them the majority of the way down. A besttop all weather trail cover will fit if you can pass it between the light bar and windshield down to the height of the wiper blades. Goes on/off in less than a minute. Order from Amazon if you can, they're very accommodating with returns.

Yeah the space between the lightbar and the windshield frame completely goes away about halfway down the windshield, much higher than would be practical for a cab cover.

The amazon idea is good, though. I'll try a few out and see if I can make them work in a way that's acceptable to me.

Yeah, I could see how that would be more frustrating. My buddy has a TJ with factory hardware and it is a breeze going up and down (remove quarters, throw levers above the windshield, fold back and secure) and so I assumed the YJ hardware would be too.

edit: I can't imagine the discomfort of being stuffed in a fold-and-tumble rear seat with Jeff Goldblum
