Apparently both Harry Brown and I Saw the Devil are on netflix as of today, the former consisting mostly of Michael Caine murdering the poo poo out of chavs, the latter being a korean revenge deal that is straight up one of the most violent movies I've ever seen. If you liked the revenge trilogy you'll dig it.

The win of a lifetime, twice.
So Netflix seems to have a response to all the complaints

quote:

Hi, Tom Willerer here from the product team with an update for those of you who post reviews on the site. We’re removing avatars, nicknames and bios associated with reviews, as very few Netflix members use them. We’re constantly working to improve the Netflix experience, and by removing these little-used features we are simplifying the review process.

remove more from the website! While I dont really care about the avatars/nicknames/bios ...now i dont really care about this but total anonymous reviews sounds like people will leave much worse reviews, not better ones

Watched Black Death with Sean Bean last night thinking it would be straight-to-DVD dreck (I mean just look at that loving cover), but it was actually a quality product. Great atmosphere, nice acting and action scenes, and an interesting exploration of morality.

It's set against the Black Death, of course, so there's boils aplenty if you like that.

I watched that a few days ago and really enjoyed it. I went in thinking it would be some kind of mindless action movie but it was kind of like The Wickerman/Witchfinder General but with broadswords. Speaking of which, Witchfinder General is up if you want some good ol' Vincent Price torturing people and being Vincent Price-ish.

I think most people here probably know about it- The Good, the Bad, the Weird is up and is a fantastic non-traditional western with lots of fun fight scenes, cool setting and a bunch of badass characters.

Sorry if this is a repeat but I just noticed a movie the other day called Jack Goes Boating starring Philip Seymour Hoffman was available on instant and, true to form, it's weird as poo poo but I find myself grinning at my TV screen for long periods of time when I watch it. It's neat.

Not a movie, but I figure it's worth a mention for the sheer size: Every episode of Power Rangers except for the currently running season is now streamable.

It would take over 10 days to watch every episode back-to-back! :aaaaa:

Speaking of TV episodes, I've been watching George Gently, a British crime drama. I don't know anything about it really, but it feels like Columbo meets Sherlock Holmes so far, and it's pretty entertaining. If you like CSI, MI:5, NCIS or stuff like that give it a look.

What really bugs me is that TV shows aren't separated by seasons any more. So it basically takes 1 rating and applies it to every season of that show. It's not like there's drastic changes in seasons or anything sometimes...

It also has no results whatsoever for a show called Dual Survival on Discovery channel. Survivorman is on Instant Watch though, I've never seen it, but maybe I'll try that.

I see your point about the ratings, but I was pretty happy when they consolidated shows into a single entry. It's nice not to have separate seasons in my queue or have to search out the next season when I'm done with the current one.

I dont know if it was mentioned in this thread before, or if I got the recommendation from this thread, but watch Dogtooth.

I really dont want to say much about this film because I dont want to give spoil anything. In an intentionally vague description this film is about a family that lives secluded in the woods. I enjoyed it quite a bit and think it is an extremely good movie.

I watched two pretty good movies (by my standards anyways) recently. One was Leaves Of Grass starring Edward Norton, and the other was Shrink with Kevin Spacey. Norton and Spacey are two of my favorite actors so if you like them, I imagine you'd probably like the movies too.

It's 24 episodes with one storyline, about a photographer who meets a girl who can make some people's innermost desire come true. The less said the better, but the first two episodes end with the same climax told from two viewpoints which I don't remember any other tv show doing. From there it's up and down but it kept me engaged.

And if you like Iron Man, the cartoon they added awhile ago just got a whole bunch of episodes. It's surprisingly solid, with a cel-shaded animation style. It's up and down, not the best cartoon of all time, but way better than I thought it'd be. I dig it.

I started playing a few of these and I'm kind of really pissed off about that show now.

Nowadays, even kids' shows seem to be trying hard to make good stories and have competent writing. Like, any popular show lately isn't complete poo poo.

Power Rangers is from a time where it seems you could just heap poo poo on kids as long as there were flashy colors and funny noises. I think if my kids watched a show like that, I would write the producers a strongly-worded letter.

A while back someone mentioned that Oldboy (a great film btw) is part of a pseudo-trilogy created by the director for the revenge genre. Does anyone know the other two titles? I think Lady Vengeance was one of them.

Also, I Saw The Devil was a great film, I wasn't really expecting the level they took it too.

Korean movies have really been going amazing places lately, it seems to be some kind of wave of new directors who are just blowing it up. I can't wait to see what else comes from there.

The trilogy is very loose and you don't need to watch them in any order, but in order of release dates its Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, then Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. They're all up on Netflix now but I think they're dubbed.

I liked the first one the most, it's fantastic and gets overlooked because of Oldboy.

Yeah I'm watching Lady Vengeance now and the subtitles have one on screen and than the next line in the cropper area. It's really annoying when the background of a scene is white.

An in-depth and very personal documentary on the life and work of Keith Haring, one of the more influential figures in graphic design and general pop culture in the late 80s/early 90s. An excellent watch if you're interested in that kind of stuff at all. Even if you don't recognize the name, you've probably seen at least a hundred Keith Haring pieces in your lifetime. Amen. The series does start off very slow, but about the fourth or fifth episode it really finds its legs. I think they've also tacked on the Gods of the Arena prequel, which is a six episode orgy of violence, sex, violence, more sex, more violence, and just a bit of scenery chewing.
