Seriously, when I read "'After waiting this long, this just isn't acceptable,'" my first thought was "Holy hell, what a self-entitled rear end in a top hat you are," then "If you ever said that in a restaurant they would tell you to get the gently caress out immediately."

The only thing I got from that analogy is that the cook makes up all of the burgers before escaping into the night. All that he leaves his his trail of overpowering spices.

Never preorder anything from HMV, if you are in the UK. Nothing on Monday, nothing today. My preorder is late and I have been looking forward to this for weeks :(.

If my preorder was a burger, it would be like smelling the burger and seeing it, but not being able to touch or taste it.

I agree, I'm not seeing the sickly green coloration that I saw in the screenshots. The color balance still looks correct (i.e. skintones, skies, etc.), even if there is a bit more blue/green added to some shots.

The Big Country, though a Walmart exclusive, looks fantastic. I only skimmed a few parts (haven't seen the entire film on Blu or otherwise), but the detail is ridiculously high. In a few panoramic wide shots, it's possible to see individual blades of grass flowing in the wind.

It's weird that Fox/MGM would opt to make this an exclusive since it's obvious a fortune went into the restoration and remastering.

Let me see if I can convey our position and feeling in an analogy that you'll understand.

Imagine one day you go to your favorite pizza parlor. It's called Chef Mario's To you, they're known for the fact that they make pies with bacon, Snickers, and then deep fry it.

One day they announce big changes are coming to customizable pizzas. You can't wait. You wait a very long time.

The day comes and you go in. You take a whiff of your inhaler and you announce to the lowly, pathetic cashier, "ONE EXTRA LARGE WITH THE USUAL."

But the idiot informs you that they have REMOVED SNICKERS AND DEEP FRYING FROM THE MENU, as they are making :airquote:healthier choices:airquote: They have altered Chef Mario's original vision for the sake of attracting a few new casuals that won't care about the love that went into each DFSB (Deep Fried Snickers Bacon) Pizza.

Finally, you exhale in frustration, and tell him where he can stick their new "healthier options" as the entire restaurant stands up and cheers you.

THAT is what the change in aspect ratio from 1.85:1 to 1.78:1 is like on this new release you uncultured tard.

I got through The Fellowship of the Ring. I found the colour changes are noticeable but it looks better in motion and I agree that it improves the skin tones and vegetation. The contrast and darkened shadows look great in most of the dark shots, especially Gollum's cave and some areas of Moria.

The transfer really is amazing and it's great to have a good display that I can appreciate that with. I could see things I never noticed before in the environments and it really goes to show how much detail went into the sets. Unfortunately due to that detail some effects do show their age in a few terrain shots and other areas. Even so it's amazing how well these films have aged after so many years.

Sound is truly outstanding and I heard some of the movie in surround and with headphones, this is a movie you want to test your sound on.

I did have a few issues with some parts of the movie, but most of it appears to be the source material at fault.

Holy poo poo LOTR is green. The trees and grass that is. Looks fantastic, lovely colours, great set and I can't wait to watch it.

I am new to this Blu-Ray stuff and this question will no doubt seem dumb, but home come all blu-rays have the black bars on the top and bottom? This is normal right? It just feels like the screen is not being used fully. I know it is something to do with how it has been filmed, so how come when movies play on TV, there are no black bars? Are they just chopping out the sides?

Dumb question I know.

This is why there are such things as (shudder) full screen dvds. People seriously with 4:3 tvs seriously thought they were losing part of the movie and were complaining about it. This is a common problem that's hard as gently caress getting people to realize they're idiots.

Fox has announced It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Season 6 for a blu-ray release on September 13. Despite (from what little info has actually gotten out) the disappointing sales of The League and Sunny Season 5 blu-rays, Fox has nonetheless decided to just keep going releasing those series on blu. Good on them, it's about time Fox stopped abandoning tv shows on blu-ray.

One thing I don't understand is that the fullscreen DVDs seemed to be specific to the US. The studios had no problem dictating that it was widescreen or nothing in most other markets. You would think there's be a proportional number of those "idiots" in Europe, the UK, Australia etc.

Yeah I have the first Harry Potter UK DVD in full screen and we had a lot of flipper discs with different crops on either side.

Only time I get irked by a/r is if I'm watching a comedy in the theater that's 2.35:1 and makes no use of it. Then films like Battle LA or whatever it's called that has about 99% of its run time in medium close up or even tighter, which looks absolutely ridiculous at such a wide aspect. Crap film by all accounts so won't be adding to my collection when it comes out.

A lot of people forget that DVDs and large, affordable home theater systems came around at about the same time. I would never by a full-screen movie, but I can understand the appeal to someone who still has a 4:3, 20" television as their main unit.

lovely older discs with 4:3 transfers and flipper discs don't count. I'm talking about separate Fullscreen and Widescreen releases, released simultaneously. The first Harry Potter is the *only* release I can think of with separate versions outside the US. In Australia, Warner decided to only release the 4:3 version. There was a large backlash on that one with many people having to import the UK disc.

Regardless, it seems odd that half a decade later, Disney still felt it *had* to release fullscreen versions in the US. (It was kinda funny buying 'The Incredibles' and having Brad Bird thank me for 'choosing the widescreen version'. What did he say on the fullscreen disc?)
