Has anyone really dove into FCPX's interface? I'm using it on a small project right now and it is SUPER frustrating. I don't know how people can call this iMovie Pro - I would much rather be using iMovie! The thing that confuses me is the whole "storyline" business. It looks like to get any kind of normal editing tools like ripple/roll you have to nest your clips in a storyline? How do I link multiple video/audio tracks into an existing storyline? Every time I try it just seems to displace things on the timeline. And once I'm there, I'm still not sure how to toggle between slip/slide and ripple/roll.

Awesome, thanks! Now for a different question - I have a client who wants content delivered over these: http://www.corndigital.com/products/digital_signage/ceres-88v.html Thing is, I don't have access to a good MP4 or WMV9 encoder, so I'm scratching my brain as to how to deliver footage. I could do MPEG-2, but I'm not sure what bitrates would be optimal for 720p footage. Anyone have any ideas here?
|
# ? Jun 30, 2011 18:07 |
|
Just use Handbrake to encode to MP4?
|
# ? Jun 30, 2011 18:37 |
|
QuickTime or x264 if you're feeling fancy to an h.264 MOV then use QT's MP4 with the "pass-through" option to make it an MP4.
|
# ? Jun 30, 2011 19:47 |
|
Should I limit the bitrate/frame size on the h.264 before doing the passthrough? According to the MPEG-4 wiki the L5 profile has a max bitrate of 8000 kbits/s at an SD resolution.

# ? Jun 30, 2011 20:00 |

The passthrough option will not re-encode the video, it just changes the container. Your settings should be made to spec when you make the MOV. QuickTime h264 can't do anything higher than L 4.1. 8Mbps is lots of bandwidth, you could get away with less. I often use a version of x264 that can be used like any other QT codec. As long as you start with the "component" preset and don't gently caress with anything other than the framerate, bitrate and maybe adding a gamma tag, it should play everywhere. You can definitely get yourself into trouble if you play around with all the settings. The results are faster than QT's h.264 and higher quality. http://www003.upp.so-net.ne.jp/mycometg3/

You can also try MPEGStream Clip which can change containers and re-encode as well. http://www.squared5.com/

I'm using Canon HF200 and a Canon HV30 which I set to shoot at 24p. The HF200 is just drag and drop clips and I captured the HV30 footage over firewire. When I drop it into a premiere timeline, it's telling me that the clips are 29.97 fps? Is it really not recording at 24 fps?

I'm not too experienced with the Canon HV30 but my guess is that since it's mini DV and fairly cheap, it's probably recording at 29.97 or 60fps since doing a true 24p would mean puting in the gearing to run the miniDV tape at different speeds. It's most likely using pull-down to give you 24p while still recording at 30fps. This sounds like it might be helpful http://eugenia.queru.com/2007/07/13/canon-hv20-24p-pulldown/

There should be a capture preset for HDV 24, it will remove the pulldown on capture. Are you sure you shot HDV, not DV? I guess I've never had a problem with FCP recognizing the correct frame rate when capturing HDV.

The HV30's implementation of 24p is really atrocious and you shouldn't use it, and there are no flags set on the tape that tell your NLE what fields to throw away either. Not the same at all as the 24f mode on the XHA1.

The Canon HV20 and 30 store 24p in a 60i transport stream so you need to remove pulldown to get the 24p video. Because Canon doesn't have certain flags set, many NLE cannot automatically remove pulldown. For example I use Sony Vegas Pro and it cannot do it. However, Cineform can remove pulldown, Cineform Neo and Neoscene can do this. Plus you get Cineform intermediate codecs to work with. So for me its HV20 HDV capture to Cineform to Vegas for my cheesy hobbyist workflow. Also I just got a Blackmagic Hyperdeck Shuttle and a OCZ Vertex 3 SSd to attach to the Canon for direct full 1080P capture in uncompressed pixel perfect format.

Anyone have Compressor 4 and figure out how to put on JUST an H264 conversion? Compressor 3.5 had a great H264 for intranets/LAN preset but I have Compressor 3 & 4 at home, neither of which has that. I'd be happy sticking with 4 and just dropping on an H264 preset then changing it, but they removed the regular H264 preset as well. Right now I'm going to 4 to convert to PreRes 4444 for stuff out of after effects, then switching back to 3 to export to H264 to send to client. Ridonculous.

Huh, apparently Compressor 4 will open Compressor 3.5 projects and render them. Not sure why you would want to do this since there's apparently no difference in performance between the two, but there you go.

The way I understood it was that Compressor 4 is the bridge between FCPX's AV Foundation underpinnings and QT Kit, which lets you use all the codecs you're used to. So, most of the functionality is probably the exact same.

This really isn't a tech or workflow question, but at the moment I'm stumped and I'm hoping I can get some ideas here: I'm supposed to edit a half hour mini-documentary for a corporate client that is basically about a road trip across America where artists are interviewed. It seems pretty straightforward, but after diving through 1tb of DSLR footage I find that there are: -Almost no establishing shots of any locations that were visited -Very little in the way of usable b-roll. Most shots suffer from horrendous rolling shutter issues or just plain not in focus I don't really know how to tie anything together since I have next to nothing besides interviews and more interviews. I was thinking of maybe hiring an After Effects person to create an animated driving map, but that only goes so far. Should I look into buying stock footage for this?

If you need to pitch it to the client, explain that it would cost less to buy stock than to build in the extra hours needed to untangle the horrible mess left by production. unless you were responsible for said mess in which case you eat the cost of the stock also, if you can get releases, get lots of stills of the artwork in question and stretch that poo poo ken burns style Dr. Fishopolis fucked around with this message at 02:10 on Jul 20, 2011 |

If I was responsible for that poo poo I'd just kill myself, all the footage looks like it was shot on an 85mm lens and there's like zero sense of location in any of the shots, everything was shot at the highest ISO possible (hooray noise in daylight shots!), and the aforementioned rolling shutter and focus problems. I didn't consider the stills of the artwork though - releases were signed by everyone interviewed, so I'm pretty sure I can get those.

So now Avid and Premiere are offering 50% off discounts. For anyone thinking they can transition into Avid easily, think again. I am tempted to buy it, since I love editing on Avid, but all my jobs have been using FCP lately. The reverse compatibility issue is my biggest pet peeve, I'm confident they are smart enough to listen to the complaints and fix the other changes accordingly, but I'm not sure the compatibility with older versions is going to be one of those fixes.

I just got my 3.4ghz i7 iMac set up and oh my god is it fast. It ingests AVCHD/h.264 in FCP7 roughly as fast as the Nehalem-based Mac Pros I've worked with. I'm sure the current 12-core Mac Pros would spank the poo poo out of this iMac, but it is still a nice upgrade for me.

I'm a sound editor currently working on a new demo reel and am extremely indecisive about what should be on it since I've seen everything so many times. I know the 4 shows/shorts that I would like to include, but I can't figure out which clips are the best. I would greatly appreciate any feedback at all, particularly which clip is best for each show (in terms of sound effects/dialogue and even just general interest as people won't want to watch it if it's boring). Even overall which clip you find the "best" so I can put that one first, or clips that you think definitely shouldn't be included. Obviously the in and out edit points are still rough, but the overall context of each clip is still there. I know it looks like a lot of clips, but they're only about a minute each.
