Baron Bifford posted:Most videogames can't seem to render perfect darkness. If you turn up the brightness level, you can see just fine; some games ask you to set your brightness to an optimal level and rely on your good faith not to cheat. Doom 3 is the only game that I know that can render true darkness that forces you to use the flashlight. Why is this the case? What is the great limitation of 3D technology that makes true darkness so difficult? It's not a limitation on technology, it's more like a decision. Doom 3 forces things so certain parts of the screen (those not illuminated by the flashlight? I haven't played the game) are pitch black no matter how high your brightness settings are. Since different screens will show things at different brightness levels, unless you want to absolutely mask certain things from view, it's unfair to those with darker monitors to force a certain brightness level in software.

Pretty much. Most games don't really want the player to be utterly blind, so they just make seeing where you're going a surmountable challenge. Doom 3 tends to show pitch black areas because its lighting model neglects global illumination; most games do try to show GI (via various means of faking it) both for the above reason and because it's more realistic to have a some level of ambient light everywhere.

Why would a dude wanna move to America anyway? Isn't there some sort of special agreement between former Commonwealth countries that lets citizens move between them? I dig a lot of American cities but if you can more easily move to a cool spot like Vancouver or something why not just do that?

Almost definitely the head. Bottles, tables, furniture, etc. are generally pre-destroyed in movies and then put back together so that they'll break properly. Or they're fragile stunt versions.

I am going to buy a new bike for my six year old son. He's big enough for a 20" wheel bike, but he hasn't learned to ride without training wheels yet. There are two types of brake systems I've found: a hand brake for the front wheel and backpeddling to stop the rear wheel. The other type uses two hand brakes. Which way is better? I was planning to get one at Walmart or some other big store. Should I shop elsewhere? Where can I buy training wheels?

I grew up with the backpedaling and it really confused me all the time when I switched to a "real" bike with only hand brakes. Bikes that size should come with training wheels if you go to Wal Mart; alternatively, I think you can buy them separately there as well.

Actually, they don't. Smaller wheeled bikes all come with training wheels and these don't. Walmart, Target and TRS don't sell training wheels separately.

He's going to outgrow it, so you could always get a bike with a coaster brake (would backpeddle to brake) and then add a handbrake. See which he uses more, then buy the next bike accordingly. It's going to be a thousand times cheaper if you get the training wheels online. Alternately, check out a bike shop. I'm sure they'll order it if they don't have it.

The book thread has been going on 6 years where we had no book coming out and very little to expect (until the book finally comes out on the 12th). The last book was somewhat of a letdown so its really been 11 years some people have been "waiting" and the author is really annoying on his "blog" about the reasons for this. That was just a cesspit of poo poo for a while until the TV series. Now you have a whole new bunch of people who are getting into it and unfortunately due to the nature of the series there are lots of spoilers and stuff which can ruins peoples viewings. Its one of those things where its really difficult to have read the books and discuss things with people who have only seen the first show so the non spoiler thread always has stupid fights about what constitutes a spoiler. Mentioning that a character is alive in later books and stuff like that. Realise that the first book came out about 15 years ago and the series is only just past half way or so. Many people are very bitter and jaded cause its quite an awesome series.

I own a Blackberry, and as such have access to the Blackberry IM service. If I wanted to add the Pin code of someone in Canada, with me being located in the United Kingdom, would this work as a normal IM service or would it be restricted to the network differences and such, and possibly cause myself and the other person to receive additional charges? None of the BBM stuff is explicitly stated in my contract and I'm somewhat clueless as to how it actually works correctly - part of me thinks it's similar to the likes of MSN and such and relies on the internet, but I'm not fully convinced and don't want to incur charges on my contract that I may not be able to afford. Basically, can BBM send messages across continents without being restricted by roaming charges, etc?

I've read about restless leg syndrome and I feel like I have something kind of similar. Rubbing my feet together or on fabric feels really really good -- like to the point of literally doing it for long periods of time (15-30 mins) -- especially when I'm trying to go to sleep or relaxing. However, unlike the stuff I read on RLS, I don't have any "discomfort" to relieve and it doesn't affect my whole legs, just my feet. Does anyone else have this? What is it? I don't even feel like it's a problem, I'm just kinda curious.

I don't even feel like it's a problem, I'm just kinda curious. Maybe you just find the feeling of fabric on your feet relaxing. There doesn't need to be anything special to it. When I was a child I used to rub the satin lining of my blanket with my fingers to help me get to sleep because it felt soothing. I have RLS and I can assure you that you do not. I don't experience pain, but keeping my legs still if I'm trying to settle down in bed feels really uncomfortable (and in some cases makes me feel insecure; it's god drat weird) and the discomfort goes away when I move them. It's something my family has noticed for years before I became aware of it. They pointed out that I used to wiggle my feet when taking couch naps as a teenager. If I'm just laying down without sleeping I don't do it. I feel the discomfort only when I'm trying to get to sleep.

Around Christmas I bought a copy of Norton 360 4.0 on sale, but never opened and installed it so the code is still unused. Flash-forward to today: A family member's current AV subscription ends in about 2 months and was just going to install the 360 4.0 for them, but I see that Norton 360 5.0 is currently out, already. If we go ahead and install the 360 4.0 now, will they still get a full year of coverage from it? Will it still even authenticate?

Sizzlechest posted:I am going to buy a new bike for my six year old son. He's big enough for a 20" wheel bike, but he hasn't learned to ride without training wheels yet. You are referring to hand brakes (usually caliper brakes) and what's called coaster brakes. The reason many kids bikes have coaster brakes is because kid's hands are not strong enough to grip the lever enough for caliper brakes to come to a complete stop, if even slow it down. Also, if you get caliper brakes wet at all they are pretty much useless. Since coaster brakes are sealed from the elements and are dead simple to use, they are better suited for kids bikes. If you want the best experience, go to a bike shop. You'll pay more than Walmart or Target, but any good shop should be able to find a bike that suits your kid (there's more than just wheel size, there's top tube length, seat and head angles, etc..) and be able to try out multiple bike styles to find out what he likes best. Many shops will throw in free maintenance for a year or so which you will need (the brake cable stretches out, spokes need to be tightened, chain needs to be replaced). If you feel he can handle the hand brake kind, get him that. It'll be more natural in the long run and he will be able to adjust his feet for better balance if he has a freewheel as apposed to a coaster brake. If he wants to do bitching skids though, he needs the coaster brake.

A cab driver told me his name was (spelled phonetically) Frada with a trill on the r. I told him I was pretty sure he was loving with me and that it had to be a cuss word in his native tongue. He just laughed and didn't confirm or deny. Problem is I'm not sure what nationality he was so I can't look it up. I think he might have been Sri Lankan. Some sort of Indian decent. Does that sound like a name or a cuss word to anyone?

Getting followers to a blog is harder than people think because the market is saturated with blogs about absolutely everything. Your stuff has to be on point to gain a real base.
