What's the point of using BiteSMS on an iPad? Serious question, I don't have a clue.

Don't they have the service that lets you create a number and buy packages to text through the web? If you always have your iPad with you, and always have a data connection, might be worth it to have all of your communication on the tablet.

I wouldn't, but I can see the case.

That's why I'm asking.

I didn't realize so many people would use biteSMS with their iPads. You can jailbreak 4.3.3 fine with the other tools on any other device and biteSMS works.

I don't have an iPad at all but I used the new jailbreakme to upgrade my iPhone 4 to 4.3.3 and if it won't work, that's kind of a pain.

Because it's easier? Why would you use redsn0w or pwnagetool when you have Jailbreakme as an option?

Redsn0w and pwnagetool are better tested, and don't have oddities like BiteSMS not working.

I understand using jbme for an iPad2 where there's no existing jailbreak but it's not like redsn0w is very hard to use.

Yeah, I hate to bandwagon this, but redsn0w and pwnagetool are both very easy to use - tedious? Yes. But there are very clear and easy to follow instructions so it is not difficult.

The reason I used jailbreakme was pretty simple: My iPhone had been working just fine running 4.2(.2 I think) so I never bothered to research or stay up to date on new jailbreaks. Along comes old reliable Comex/MuscleNerd/jailbreakme.com so I figured why the hell not and updated/restored last night.

Sorry for trying it the easy way I guess?

What is my best option for a tethering app? I have an iPhone 4, 4.3.3. I won't be tethering very often, and it'll mostly be my wifi iPad2, and the occasional laptop.

I've never tethered, and I don't really understand the difference between using bluetooth and wifi, except I think I've read that bluetooth is easier on the battery?

With the addition of the native wifi hotspot, I'm leaning towards TetherMe, along with a SBSettings toggle for the hotspot. Does MyWi offer anything that TetherMe doesn't in my case? With TetherMe, will it end up being as simple as SBSettings->toggle hotspot->iPad automatically connects to wifi?

Here's about the best explanation I've found as to why BiteSMS (and limited other apps) aren't working correctly: http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=12895815&postcount=49

I'd imagine those jailbreak applications that aren't working because of the new type of jailbreak--and especially BiteSMS because of its active developers--will all be updated fairly shortly and begin working.

In the meantime, if you jailbroke with JailbreaMe.com and absolutely can't live without BiteSMS, just follow the how-to in the op and install redsn0w. The potential for better performance & fewer stability issues with a UnionFS-type jailbreak seems like it's worth putting up with BiteSMS not working until the developers fix it though.

Yeah, this right here is pretty much why I decided to just wait it out until BiteSMS is updated. I can live with Messages.app for a few days.

The only advantage to MyWi over the cheaper TetherMe app is "MyWi OnDemand" which lets the tethered device (say, a wifi-only iPad) automatically turn on MyWi tethering on your phone when needed, then turn it off when done. This feature uses bluetooth, which does seem to use less battery, but is also a tiny bit slower than wifi. It costs like $10 for the phone and another $2 or $5 (it varies) for the tethered device (iPad, in my example.) With TetherMe you have to go settings -> TetherMe -> on, then remember to turn it off when done or your battery will poo poo itself.

MyWi also does normal wifi hotspot-tethering like TetherMe and has more options: you can set the transmit strength, so you can trade of battery usage for wifi transmit distance (30% power uses about 1/3 the power of TetherMe and goes a good 10 feet.) And you can set it to use a status bar icon when on instead of TetherMe's giant throbbing blue bar which (1) uses way more battery and (2) fucks up some apps so you can't really see all of the screen on the iPhone when you're tethering. It's like that red "return to call" bar you've probably seen, but you can't turn it off as long as any device is being tethered, and it kind of sucks. But it may not be an issue for you if you don't care about tethering battery usage or plan to use your phone much while tethering.

Worked fine for me, but that maybe because I already had a license from way back. You might want to consider that the iPad2 jailbreak just came out so auth servers are being hammered as tons of iPadders are JailBreaking and buying apps. You can email the dev for help, or just wait and retry in a day or so when things settle down. Or demand a refund, restore, and go back to how things were working "beautifully" before (with lovely pixel doubling instead of retina assets on your pad.)

So a late 'reply' to the "People excited for Jailbreaking only want to Pirate" argument, as well as something that I think NEEDS to be recommended Jailbreak App 101...

Browser Changer.

Nothing gets my goat more than having and using iCab Mobile, only to have my Youtube shortcut, anything I open in Mail, etc... all open in Safari.

This allows you to pick your default browser that EVERYTHING opens to. It is glorious!

One thing I'd like to ask of anyone who has used this app... can you make it so when you open something it does NOT hijack your existing tab? It should create a new tab, but it doesn't. It changes the tab you left your browser on.

To answer my own question, this in fact worked, although some of the stuff doesn't seem to apply. I managed to install XBMC and get that working, and performance was ok at best. Definitely worth it for a second bedroom, but I'm not sure I could stand it as a full time HTPC.

Display weather in an otherwise wasted piece of screen, as well as the ability to move the menus around and remove stuff you'll never use.

And obviously SSH access.

Like I've said before what would make JB ATV2s even better is if there was a tweak to allow MLB.tv to run thru a proxy to avoid blackout BS.
