Saw an aircraft carrier leaving port on the coastline by my house last week or something, so I took some photos. Not sure which one it was, only that it's very British (and kind of poorly armed for a Carrier). I thought it was awesome and in general carriers are the modern day naval definition of badass.

Sorry for the poor quality, phone cameras are a bitch.

I'm pretty sure there's only one British aircraft carrier in service right now so odds are it's the HMS Illustrious.

This is an Australian built weapons system, consisting of a multi-barrel firing unit. Each barrel contains a stack of bullets paired with an electronically detonated propellant charge (kinda like a roman candle). The charges need to be electronically detonated because it's designed to fire like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEu9LLQpOF8

One of the proposed uses of this system is to shoot down incoming missiles by filling the air with a hail of bullets. You can see the effect at the end of the above video, it's like a shotgun blast using 9mm pellets instead of buckshot.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zx_9_RgMPCE
They also developed a version that shoots 40mm grenades.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyAjzowYP1o
And they've developed an autonomous system that allows it to track and fire upon perceived threats in an defined area. (They also put it onto a robot and have made a version small enough to be carried around and fired by soldiers.)

Depends on the shell. is it slug or pellets? (Or are they the same thing?)

Eventually, but not for years at this rate. Until then there are certain things we used to do in space that we will no longer be able to, like ferry people to and from the ISS (Russia is taking that over).

At present it looks like the next American manned launch vehicle will be the aptly named Space Launch System, but it's not projected to fly until 2016. Until then Russian Soyuz capsules will take over all duties of sending men and supplies to the now-complete ISS.

With the ISS complete there's not much reason to keep flying the Shuttle. It's an orbit-only platform whose primary function (placing unusually large payloads into orbit) is now no longer necessary. It's been excellent at its job, and the lessons and technology we got from the program will have a lot of influence on the next generation of space exploration, but the time has come for the end of the program.

A mixture of the government doesn't want to give NASA funding and most of the engineers and designers leaving for the private sector where there's more money and less bureaucracy.
