He just cleaned house too easily with characters that seemed like they could have lasted at least a good ten issues more to actually build up some sort of giving of a poo poo when they did die. But again, this isn't news to anyone as it seems that Kirkman knows how to set up interesting ideas and then completely avoid developing them. I'm not done with this comic, even though I walked away from it for a time after Lori died, but by god man. This was just sloppy all around.

I would've preferred they stayed in the suburbs for a good long while and see how a normalized co-existance with the zombies would've worked out. That place had existed for years before Rick and Co. got there and supposedly improved the security and construction and yet it falls apart almost instantaneously? In the long run the zombies are always going to break down any refuge, like entropy, but this feels less like inevitble mounting horror then Rick just having incredibly lovely luck.

Regardless of what happens with Carl, I hope they try to salvage the town and not just walk away. Watching the Rick and the gang go on wandering aimlessly does not seem very appealing.

I don't think that there's any possible way to construe the following as spoilers, but if you want to know nothing at all about the new issue, turn back now. Read the current issue, and I am unimpressed. The "big event" of this arc, complete with a two page spread and bubbles worth of hollering, really only effects a character that has been uninteresting and largely static since his introduction; nothing points to any change for him/her because of the incident. This whole series has been sliding into mediocrity since the prison/eye patch guy story. Fear the Hunters was filler, the drama with Rick and the telephone is/was uninteresting, and no matter how Kirkman pushes her, I will never be engaged by Michone's passive agressive angst. I think we can assume that No Way Out has had its climax. The pillow talk for this arc is going to have to be dang good to get me to come back for another five issues of formula writing. Also, anyone agree that Rick's transformation into a "shocking" character kind of leaves the reader wihtout any attachment to the story as a whole? The only other character that I really liked was Dale, both because of his unusual relationship with andrea, and because he was just an unusual survivor. Old man with one leg saves the day with an RV? Pretty cool. Edit: the incident with rick's gal pal and the axe maneuver WAS pretty good stuff. I really liked this weeks issue and felt it was a total 180 from what people come to expect out of this series. There were a lot of bad rear end moments and I can totally see a time jump coming. Also, I want Rick as a blue lantern now.

Either this series is soon approaching a [potentially happy] ending or Rick is going to go full-on despot in the next couple arcs. I don't mind either way. Or, we'll get my ReBoot season 3 fantasy. Carl's even missing the eye now, dammit.

This issue was great, I thought. I was dreading reading it because the last few issues have really left me feeling down after reading them. Here, though, everything was hopeful and badass and they took it right to the zombies, about which Rick is right: they should have been doing all along.

Besides everyone killing a bunch of zombies and Rick coming up with this revelation to stay instead of run nothing happened in this issue. After the last one left us hanging so bad, this issue really failed to deliver.

But this was a line in the sand moment, a real 'about fuckin time' they stopped trying to tear off and give up whatever they had established. I would have been more pissed if they did the exact same thing that happened at the prison...lose half the people and jackrabbit again. What did you want or expect? A real Calvary? UFOs? Rick going all zen as he is eaten?

No, you make a good point with that. I guess I really just wanted to know if Carl was going to make it or not, but that seems to still be in the air right now. We could really use an updated character list in the next issue, so many people died lately, it's be nice to have a year book so I know whose still around and who isn't.

Welcome development with this issue, and an interesting plot turn. But the way it was delivered spotlighted some of my issues with Kirkman. A multi-page monologue that could have been delivered within the space of a paragraph. The man loves using a page what for could be condensed into a sentence.

The hopeful ending was a nice change, and I hope the comic deals with rebuilding a society, at least for awhile. I know that eventually the whole thing will get hosed, but Kirkman REALLY needs to take a break from killing everyone off so quickly. It's creating a massive burnout.

I honestly hope Carl does die and then turns. I really want to see how far Rick will push his "I'll do what I have to do" stance. It'd be interesting to know if it does finally have a breaking point and there would be something he just can't do.

I don't know that I particularly care one way or the other whether or not Carl dies. But one problem I do see that it presents is that Carl has pretty much been Rick's only motivation to do anything at all for a while now. The issue where he chops off the chicks hand is a good example of this. Protecting Carl is what pushes Rick as a character forward and gives him meaning. Without Carl he's just another broken, faceless survivor. Thinking about it more I guess I agree with the above post, I wouldn't mind seeing Carl die. I've always found Carl to be a bit of an annoying character. Now seems as good a time as any for him to lose his plot armor. His death would be a major change in Ricks life probably forcing him to become a different character. Which I'd also see as a plus because, frankly, I'm feeling pretty bored with the whole Rick as a "crazy, extreme, leader", stuff. So Carl dying and Rick just saying "gently caress it" and going a long with whatever everyone else wanted might be more interesting at least for awhile. Then again maybe I'm just getting tired of the book, overall. I stuck with it for a long time after a lot of other people said it was dragging and had turned to poo poo. But this last issue in particular felt like a filler episode of Naruto. Just really aggravating. I love reading The Walking Dead, especially the early stuff, when I can marathon it, but issue-to-issue this book makes me want to throw it across the loving room.

I can't see Carl dying, but I can't see him being the same after this. It's disappointing he went this route as I always saw Carl as the next generation... Rougher, tougher, less sympathetic. I could have seen someone important dying like Michonne, Andrea, Rick, Ricks new GF (forget the name who did anyways) it would have been difficult but understandable. True, no one is safe but if all the kids die, where else is there to go eventually but to new characters?

I've been saying this since before the recent arc began. This series is BEGGING for the "Reboot" effect. For anyone who missed out on one of the greatest TV shows of the 90s, the second season ended with the main character apparently being killed. Season 3 picked up with the kid sidekick being a grown-up badass who learned to live in a hard world without the hero. I've always gotten the impression that Carl is the future of the series. There's only so far it can go with Rick - he's a relic of the old world. If Kirkman is serious about taking this one as far as possible, we need to see what happens to someone who grew up knowing nothing else, and Carl has been that vehicle since everything started. The moment that made me realize things were heading in a Carl-centric direction was when he killed the crazy kid - that clearly defined Carl as a product of the post-zombie world. There's only so far things can go with Rick. To make the comparison even better, Enzo (the kid in question from "Reboot") lost an eye during the skip forward.

Issue 86 has to be the most worthless issue so far. Literally nothing happens in it. If I remember correctly, didn't it end the exact same way as 85? Or maybe it was 84. It ends with Rick looking all googly eyed and saying "LOOK AT THIS PLACE! It's gonna work." Kirkman's treading water here. Either he's building up to the biggest gently caress you to his characters, or he has completely run out of idea's and he's afraid to admit it.
