Do you feel it, Zach?
My coffee warned me about it.

I'm looking for a site which I once visited which worked like Google Maps but allowed you to choose between many different satellite pictures from many different map engines. It was like "the best of" map sites where you could choose what site it takes the map from. It was sweet. Anybody knows what I'm talking about?

Also from similar online-maps department somebody once showed me a map website where you could choose between various isometric views. You had a normal satellite view and then 4 different air views taken from a helicopter or maybe a satellite shooting from an angle. This allowed you to see a place from 4 different angles. It worked for UK if I remember correctly, I don't know if other countries too. Help?

EDIT: I just found that my for my second question the answer is Bing Maps - the biggest competition to Google DUH. That isometric view feature is pretty sweet and worked even on a small Spanish town I was looking for. They also have their alternative to Google Street View, which is nice as you can see the same places from different pictures. My first question still stands though!

What would happen if you took an enormously obese person and deprived them totally of food? How long would they take to starve to death? Would they last longer than a normal sized person or would they die of malnutrition just as quick?

Probably a very dumb question but I've been poor and uninsured from my teens until recently so I've avoided going to the doctor's office whenever possible. This essentially means I only ever go the a doctor when it's an emergency or I need a prescription - either way, it's always been when I had something major that needed taking care of. Now that I'm no longer poor (but still uninsured), I don't really know how doctors work. Right now I have a handful of minor things that I want checked out/fixed/prescribed for. Can I just go into the doctor's office and bring up 3 or 4 different topics or do I need to make separate appointments for each? It kind of seems like If I asked "I have a lump here, what's the deal?" then "also why does this happen when I do this?" then "oh yeah, and is this normal?" it'd be really all over the place.

Just make an appointment with a general practitioner for a physical and then bring up everything you're concerned about. The GP will check each thing out and tell you if it's nothing to worry about, treat it if it's something he or she can treat, or refer you to a specialist.

Sure, that's basically what GPs are for. Not having insurance isn't a big deal, but call ahead to get quoted a checkup price and whatnot. You might as well buy some insurance eventually - there's lots of relatively inexpensive high-deductible plans that mainly cover expensive but improbable problems, and come 2014 Uncle Sam will start fining you if you don't.

There have been experiments like this done in a metabolic ward or under a physician's care. Here's one I found:

http://books.google.com/books?id=WFIEAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA105&lpg=PA105#v=onepage&q&f=false

They usually involve closely monitoring the person and giving them vitamins. It's not so easy to predict how long it would take for them to die. It depends on an individual's genetics. Once extreme example is zucker rats. They're genetically predisposed to be extremely obese. If you starve them, they die of malnutrition, yet remain obese. Their bodies hold onto their fat stores even at these extreme conditions.

Fun fact, zucker rats who are forced to eat less from birth to adulthood end up FATTER than ones that are allowed to eat as much as they want.

I just moved into a new place and the walls in the living room are pretty long. I wanted to put up some posters that were in landscape format to go with. Unfortunately I'm guessing getting these framed is going to be expensive as hell (there are four of them, 9"x40" each). Any other alternatives to traditional framing that could allow me to display these on more of a budget? Just sticking the poster by itself on the wall looks pretty tacky obviously. If there was a way I could make the frames on my own that'd be great.

Japanese healthcare says that if you didn't have national insurance and you switch to it, you have to pay for it... for the entire term of your residence in the country before you switched to it.

This is why you get three types of medicine and a bag of powder every time you have a cold, three weeks of antibiotics every time your throat hurts, and it takes multiple visits to the dentist every time you need a cavity drilled and filled.

Also, due to Buddhist beliefs, it's hard to get things like heart transplants in Japan, so those people tend to go to other countries like America and Germany.

But on the other hand, health insurance runs me around 300 bucks a month and acts as a flat 70% off any medical procedure, period.

I'm currently looking at laptops for college. I want one that can play games but i also want to be able to do school work on the computer. in addition I don't want to break bank. My budget is around 1300 to 1400 dollars and currently I'm looking at two laptop models: The Alienware M-14X and The Dell XPS 15.

I've heard good things about both models, however, its hard finding a good comparison between the two, especially with the Alienware as more question forums either descend into an Alienware love fest or an Alienware suck debate.

So far i have seen the Base model for the Alienware m-14x, Which costs $1099, I understand that some upgrade would be needed for some systems.

I have also seen a fully loaded Dell XPS 15, specifically with an upgraded graphics card and other goodies, priced for $1,299. Basically I would probably be set with this system, but I have heard really good things about Alienware laptops, plusone of my more tech-savvy friends swears by his m-14X so that's why I'm still weighing the two.

So I wanted to ask you: the tech savvy and wise users of Something Awful, which model would be better for me?

This is what I wanted to say, but people always seem to like to dump on netbooks for whatever reason. I've been using an EEEPC for a couple years now, the keyboard size is fine, the screen size is adequate, battery life is phenomenal, and I don't even notice it in my backpack. I don't get why people spend $1000 on laptops these days unless it's a macbook. You shouldn't even need to spend $800 to build a gaming rig from scratch to play whatever games it is you're interested in.

The thing is I don't mind having lower graphics for the games I play. If lowered graphics are the only thing that's bad about gaming laptops, than I'm not too worried about that. however, if they really cannot run games that well, than that would be a problem for me.

For reference, i don't really graphically intense games, I think the game that came closest to running my families home desktop to its maximum settings was Dawn of War 2.

In addition, I'm not tech savvy, so I really won't be upgrading a desktop computer, if I did hypothetically get one, than it would probably be the base unit and any upgrades that came with i and that's it

A $1400 gaming laptop would run games worse than $600 or so desktop you build yourself, is about the long and short of it. For the money a decent gaming laptop costs you can get a crazy powerful desktop that would also last much longer.

Someday soon
They guy's going away and wants a portable system so desktop recommendations are a bit worthless really. I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 which has an NVidia card in it, I playing Portal 2 with decent visuals but I'm not hardcore into graphics - it does me fine and it's four years old. Just look at normal systems with graphics, don't spend coin on "gaming" hardware. You're getting ripped off with Alienware, and you're getting ripped off with the XPS line.

If you are aiming for portablility, be aware that laptops that have gaming hardware are heavy as gently caress. My laptop is such a burdon to carry compared to my friend's 1525 which doesn't have the graphics card. It's half the depth and probably half the weight. Much easier to slip in a bag and carry around.
A gaming laptop is a desktop replacement at an increased cost and reduced upgradability. Hence people's comments on desktops.

That said, I don't have a current suggestion for you, and when I replace my laptop I'll be building a gaming PC and having a supplemental tablet or netbook.

Basically what should be done is he should just get a standard midrange laptop. They all have fairly decent graphics and CPUs and they're honestly only a little worse at games than a gaming laptop is. But what they also have is that they don't run hot as heck, they don't have 30 minute battery lives and they cost less.

I got this Dell studio 15 last year, when "Studio" was their midrange between Inspirons and Alienware gamer laptops (the midrange is now called XPS). It's got an i5, some AMD graphics card with a gig of video ram,8 gb of system ram etc. Cost about $1100-$1200, ruins most new games just fine, but it also has a 4 hour battery and won' t boil water next to it.
