Is there a good guideline for getting a face to look like a face? I've gotten down the majority of a body, the eyes, mouth, etc, but the shape of a face is driving me crazy.

Not sure if this is the right place/thread but I have a flash question.

I have a flash animation(that someone else made) in After Effects in order to do some effects that aren't possible in flash.

The thing is, whatever engine AFX is using to render the flash file is rendering the vector art 'too' sharp so any zooming/scaling (in flash) results in buzzing on bitmaps and aliasing on high frequency vectors.

Is there any way to configure the flash 'renderer' to use a softer sampling? I can't seem to find it.

The other brute force solution would be to render out at a higher res and scale down.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "buzzing", and to clarify: are you scaling this in AE at all, or just letting the SWF play at its native size?

Buzzing as in aliasing on a fine texture thats being scaled. I'm not scaling in AFX at all. The zooms are all done in the swf.

Its pretty much aliasing. The way the swf is being rendered is just too sharp. It is sub sampled but as soon as you put motion on it like a zoom or scale, its very noticeable.

Does anyone have an idea how one would go about making a one way mirrored visor? I have a pretty clear idea on how to make the rest of the Seva suit from Stalker but this visor is giving me trouble. I first had an idea to use car window tinting on this clear acrylic lamp post globe I plan on cutting into the proper shape, but so I'm told, it doesn't stick properly. A lot of the info I'm getting on Google is giving me motorcycle helmets and replaceable stick on tinting for them.
This is the effect I'm going for, or at least close to.

Ahh, I get it now. Sorry, I can't help - I thought you were describing something happening while the SWF was scaling.

What's the workflow here? I get that the animation was made in AE and now it's playing back in Flash. How is it getting from AE to Flash (conversion settings, format, etc)?

Open up word and use one of their invoice templates, or look for one on the web.

The only thing you probably won't know is "Terms" and that just means how many days before they make payment. Typically is 30 (one month), or immediate. You probably want immediate.

They just need it for their record keeping poo poo so they can tie a check to a bill.

Softer pencils will actually repel ink, so I wouldn't go too far down the B scale.

And I know this is pretty old, but:

I did have some more questions. I can't seem to do any fills without some paper warping. I use 100 lb. bristol (both plate and vellum). I've been using Higgins Eternal with about 20% Speedball Super Black ink. Am I laying on too much ink or do I need different paper? I've noticed it's worse when I use pure Speedball Super Black ink. Is it just a thing that happens with darker ink?

There is always going to be some warping no matter what the paper is. However, you can just press it under a couple of heavy books for a day or so (or use a hot press if you have one handy) and it'll be pretty flat.

Sassing the mod is an incredibly wise and productive career move.

To actually answer your question: yes. The most prominent line-drawing artist I know of is Hugh MacLeod.

The first thing you'll want to do, though, is clean your linework up. The scratchy back-and-forth drawing works in sketches, but for finished work you don't want those jagged edges. Otherwise, the line art that I've seen work well is entirely non-representational, but you may find that representational art works just as well.

The key, though, is this: there is a market for anything if you play your cards right.

Is lighting tandoori chicken on fire for presentation a "thing"? I thought I remembered a local Indian restaurant doing it when I was a kid, but I can't find any reference to it on a quick Google search. Maybe it was another dish and I'm mixing them up?

I could see a Surrealist or even Dadaist presentation based around serving chicken on fire, but you're probably looking for the general Q&A thread in Goons with spoons.

I always felt that art is whatever you make of it. I wouldn't be concerned if there is a pre-existing niche for this. Just create good work and the rest should take care of itself.

I need to design a vehicle decal for a client and I've never done it before.
Is it anything like a stencil, where the image can't be too intricate and has to be a contiguous shape etc? Or is there something else I have to look out for?

My main concern is their logo. It's styled similar to a heraldry crest with lots of tiny details and I don't know if it'll work.

Okay, so last week I was watching a random episode of Daria that had come on late at night on TV. Jane was using gummy bears that had been heated up in the microwave to put a sort of glaze/paint on a sculpture. Could this actually work? And if so, what should I use to prevent the actual gummy bear glaze from sticking to everything and attracting bugs?

it's starch, gelatin, and sugars... so yes, you can do it, as long as you're not attached to it not lasting a long time or being made of stuff that can get brittle, rot, decay, etc.

Its the other way around. Animation was done in flash and the swf file was imported into AE to add some effects that are not doable in flash. However, when it gets rendered in AE, I get aliasing artifacts and buzzing on scaling textures that are all part of the flash content and not added in AE. Basically the flash content does this no matter where its being played whether in AE or in a browser. Having said that, it seems that the pro Adobe apps should have some flash override for non real time rendering out of flash at a higher sampling quality.

So I've got a weird issue in PS. I think I have the latest version at 12.04. I only get this issue on my laptop which has a Quadro FX570M GPU.

Whenever I use the standard brush, especially set to hard, it doesn't update the stroke until I've moved about 1/4 the diameter of the brush. This turns into really jerky strokes when the brush diameter is really large.

I've searched online and people have said that updating the graphics driver usually solves it but I'm on the latest nvidia drivers for my GPU :(

Why not buy them from a wholesaler? My dad gets them for about 4 dollars a piece. The selection is pretty limited though.

if you are just casting in resin or epoxy, its very easy if you have the right set up... any online guide that goes over resin casting will give you the info you need.

if you're making your own molds or want to, I'd suggest
http://www.amazon.com/Essential-Guide-Making-Casting-Ceramics/dp/1600590772/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1310899088&sr=8-1

really, it's all practice. once you get the basics down you just have to do it... but for little things, it's easy as pie and resin is pretty cheap.

Hi, the community health center I'm working/interning with are passing a flip cam around their offices in order to record patient testimonials.

It's going to busy people who haven't been giving much thought to where they record the videos (they're fine for transcription, but I'd like to have some decent videos for the web, etc.)

So I want to come up with a little sheet to pass around with the cameras so they get the best video given the circumstances.

I'm not much of a video person, but these are the things I'm thinking of to put on it. What am I missing?

1. Try to find a quiet, well lit location with an uncluttered background.
2. Don't talk over the patient while they're talking.
3. If you're helping them with things to say ask that they repeat your question in their answer.
4. Don't zoom or pan around while the person is talking.
5. ?

I don't think so. Thr original content is vector based animation made in flash. I'm pretty sure even if I could import into another app it would still use the same flash engine to render. Unless someone knows how to bypass the standard flash renderer?

I don't know if I'm accidentally hitting a hotkey and don't understand what's going on or what, but in Illustrator (CS5) every once in a while there will be a "phantom group" or "phantom selection" or something like that. I'll have nothing selected but there will be controls/edges around some items that aren't in a group. I'll select another tool, but the selection will remain. If I make a new object, it puts it in the "group" and resizes the boundaries of the selection to include it.

The only way I seem to be able to get out of the phantom group is if I resize everything inside then hit undo. At that point the problem will just go away. From what I can recall the item is usually text - but always unrelated text. I'm able to make a solid and have it included as well, but from what I recall it is generally text.

e: Probably unrelated, but another issue is phantom selection boxes. It's as if I had the Direct Selection Tool hovering over an anchor point but my mouse is nowhere near there. If I scroll in any direction it just selects points along that line until that area of the screen is a certain distance away from where I started. Again, this is only sometimes, but these two things are really annoying.

I'm not aware of a way to do this in Adobe apps (great idea, though), but it's something you can set up with font managers such as Suitcase and FontExplorer.
