Last month Med School signed a new producer, "Lung": http://www.medschoolmusic.com/lung-signs-to-med-school/. Apparently he's been producing since 2008 and recently his track "Relapse" was featured on "New Blood 011". I had a quick listen to Relapse and thought it was pretty bland and boring. I think it is amusing that Lung is producing stuff like this when Noisia, BSE and Calyx are listed as "favourites" on his Med School page: http://www.medschoolmusic.com/artists/lung/.

Disagree, I really like Relapse. Also this Kryptic Minds remix of one of his tunes is fantastic:

It's not by the fans though. Skullstep at least, It's just a joke from dogsonacid users like clownstep was mainly moking the American favoured DnB style. It's used so much though now it's kinda entered the general lexicon.

I just had a quick listen but that doesn't have the elements of 'skullstep', i can't describe it properly but the stuff people talking about has like extra faster breaks with loads of snare hits (i think its snare). That track seemed to just have a regular break.

Yeah see, I didn't think of it as any different drum and bass either really. But I see that Current Value is a big one in this "Skullstep" stuff.

Very good little Jungle mix this one. Nice to see LFO speeded up to gently caress, really didn't expect that. Also nice to see that Internal Affairs EP get some action, that was Goldie alongside the 4Hero boys (with them actually co-producing rather than engineering) and it's something I don't see people play or put in mixtapes much. Actually this mix may as well be a Reinforced thing as that's where 75% of the stuff comes from. Want to know why I always big up the Reinforced crew? This is why.

And the Satin Storm stuff just makes me jealous since I just can't afford - well more don't want to pay - what people ask for that Out Of My Head single.

So Hospital Records just released their Hospitality: Festival Drum & Bass album. The mix is pretty good and worth picking up. I know some people aren't a fan of Hospital's generic liquid sound, but the album has a lot of fresh music that's not all from their label.

Here's a couple of my favorite tracks from the mix:

"Visions" - D*Minds
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HV2TsMv9PQU
Really spacey one that I love. This is a new release that came out with the album. Not really familiar with Distorted Minds, but I love this track.

"Desert Orgy" - Phace & Misanthrop
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VEudg6bInpE
One for all the Neurofunk fans! I am gradually starting to like neurofunk - and this track is a killer. It's a few months old, but still a great track nonetheless.

"Recurring Dream" - MRSA & Parallax
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPopJRoDFpU
This track is a pretty smooth one. More liquid than the last two. Really dig the vocals on it.

"Stargate" - Ant Miles & Moving Fusion
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYvv0AzIXSk
New track from Moving Fusion that I love. Kinda dark and dirty. Really cool one that will get lots of play in my library.

These are just a few of the tracks that I specifically like on the album. It's definitely worth picking up, regardless of if you like Hospital or not.

I listened to Evol Intent a lot when the whole Skullstep thing took off. I was 17 and I was angry so it worked. That subgenre went to poo poo after Current Value showed up to let everyone know how it's done. After the whole thing turned into nothing but people trying to copy CV I bailed out. Soon enough after that the whole minimal and autonomic thing came around, which I think was definitely a reaction in part to that hardcore stuff. I'm pretty much just into that minimal/techy stuff at the moment, even if it is in a bit of a dry spell...

I don't mind drumstep when I'm out at a club drunk as hell, but I would seriously never listen to that annoying screechy poo poo at home.

Never really was into D&B too much, but I'm digging some of the stuff posted in this thread.

When I did listen to D&B a couple years ago, I listened mainly to Black Sun Empires albums Driving Insane and Endangered Species.

How do those fit into the genre? I never really researched it much at the time.

The track started off ok until about 0:45 when the gimmicky dubstep wavy bass or whatever it's called kicked in. Never really been a fan of dubstep/drumstep (In fact I can't tell them apart) so I hope this isn't the direction Evol Intent is taking.

Both of those tracks are from BSE's newer album, Lights and Wires, which is where they started to change stylistically leaning more to the dubstep side of things(Don't get me wrong though I still love the album).

If you like Endangered Species and Driving Insane then have a look at Cruel & Unusual which has much the same vibe as Driving Insane. Outside of albums I just did some digging around and found some other great tracks:

Dom & BSE - Sparta: featured on Dom & Roland's album Through The Looking Glass this is an immense track. I love the driving bassline however it can start to wear a little thin after a few back-to-back replays.

Telemetrik Feat. BSE - Magnet: featured on Telemetrik's album My Lightyear I really think Telemetrik and BSE collaborated well on this track.

PS: even though I love BSE to bits my favourite track from Endangered Species is still Jade - Unexist.

Was at London Lovebox this weekend and spent about most of Saturday going completely crazy at the Hospitality Stage. It was absolutely fantastic, Danny Byrd in particular as well as Camo and Krooked, even despite (because of?) the rain. Great stuff, although we were basically dancing from about 4pm till 11.30pm and wanted to die when we got home.

Got completely loving soaked (woo English summer) during Shy FX but no one seemed to care, just a lot of people stamping around in the mud. It was awesome :)

Loving that Evol Intent posted earlier. Anything else in that vein? Or anything that sounds kinda dubsteppy? I hate a lot of dub step because it sounds so corny with the drops, but anything genre-meshing like that Evol Intent song is very appealing to me. Sounds so clean.

What separates DNB from other electronic music genres? If anyone feels like answering that. I know there is info in the first post but I'm kind of more interested in personal opinions.

Check out artists like Terravita, Figure, Drumsound & Bassline Smith, Crissy Criss, and some of the more progressive Taxman/DJ Hazard stuff.

quote:

The biggest difference to most people is the higher bpm. House music sits at around 125-130, Dubstep is 135-145, but dnb can go from 160 to around 180. The other big difference is the beat pattern.

Here's a house track with a pretty standard house beat: Moloko - Sing it back
Note how there's a bass kick on every beat.

With Drum & Bass, not only is the tempo faster, but the beat pattern is kick-snare-kick-snare (called a broken beat) as opposed to 4 kicks (sometimes called 4-on-the-floor). Here's a track that demonstrates this beat pattern pretty well: Sub Focus - Ghost. Broken beat music isn't limited to just Drum & Bass. If you slowed D&B down to ~130 bpm, you'd have a genre called "Breaks" (Freestylers - Don't Stop).

To the trained ear, the drum pattern (called the Amen Break) used in Breaks and Drum & Bass came from a sample of a track called Amen, Brother by the Winstons. (learn more about the Amen break here) Obviously not every D&B track uses the same sample, but the general pattern has stuck permanently. Ultimately, this drum pattern, along with a bpm of around ~170-175, is what defines D&B today.

Chrix posted a few good ones. Cutline does a lot of Drumstep remixes, I am in love with a couple of them right now.

"Renegade (Cutline Remix)" - The Qemists
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1111us6mqLY
This one isn't really dubsteppy as much as it is slowed down drum & bass, or even house. But I love this one a lot right now.

"Cascade (Cutline Remix)" - The Prototypes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKEKF5-me34
I love the original of this track, but I almost want to say that I love the remix even more.

Crissy Criss dabbles in the drumstep too, like Chrix said.

"Kick Snare (Drumstep VIP)" - Crissy Criss & Youngman
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPP3LmXku4c

Not all drumstep is about the big drops from dubstep though. Some of it is just legitimately half-time drum and bass.

"Dark Water (Dub Foundation Remix)" - Tantrum Desire
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDaVtcVEyjo
This track has some slight... wobbling I guess you could say, but it doesn't overtake the song.

"Freak (Crissy Criss Drumstep Remix)" - Drumsound & Bassline Smith
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RK14qTO8Yzw
I love this mix. The youtube vid is absolutely horrid quality, but it is the only one online. The sub-bass is killer on it.

If you aren't a fan of the US Dubstep sound (95% Skrillex imitators) then you most likely won't like US Drumstep either. It's very mid-range heavy stuff that kind of annoys me in large doses.
Bad examples:
"Bass Monster (Calvertron Remix)" - FS & Reid Speed"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpDYnw0q63k
I hate the mid-range wobble poo poo when it takes over the song. This is the majority of "Drumstep" produced by the Play Me 2 record label.

"Heavy Artillery (Adroa Remix)" - Excision & Downlink"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoSzgcQMT9M
This one kinda bugs me too, but to each his own. Why do we Americans have to ruin music when we touch it :(

Lots of good drumstep to be found though. That whole Evol Intent EP is drumstep actually, so if you liked Cruise Control, you might wanna try the other tracks.

It can be anything really*, but the most basic 2 step beat you'd find in dnb/breaks is:
code:
1-2-3-4-
K-S--KS-
(K= kick S= snare)
Compared to the "kick on every beat" pattern in house:
code:
1-2-3-4-
K-K-K-K-
DOOF DOOF DOOF DOOF

*edit: unless you were talking about the amen specifically in which case yes there is a double kick before the 2nd snare.
