I think the installer downloads an old version of the launcher, look for Launcher 5.5g on Hard Light

EDIT: Alternatively, installing to Program Files might be causing permissions problems. Try running as administrator or installing to another directory

The bombers come in on the opposite side of the loving galaxy while I'm getting picked apart by missiles, and I have to jet all the way across the loving battlefield just to GET to them, not to mention attempt to shoot their bombs out of the sky, which is next to loving IMPOSSIBLE, and try to TAG them with these stupid rockets that they keep ducking out of the way of. Even when I do manage to TAG them, it wears off before the stupid ship can burn them to a crisp. ARGH!

When they spawn the first waves of fighters 7000 meters away from the Deimos corvette, it's a test of your patience to see if you can wait for them to come to you. You failed.

In that mission you are effectively tied to the capital ship not just because of the TAG missiles, but because of the final waves that spawn on the opposite side of the ship from where you're likely to be. The key to not tearing your hair out on that mission is to be close to the ship so at least you can zip out and smack any bombers who get too close before your reinforcements show up.

The good news is it sounds like you're past what is unquestionably the worst mission in the game. :)

It's really hard to know. Anywhere from six months to two years. One the one hand, the script is enormous compared to the first one; on the other hand, progress has been a lot faster.

I would suggest just giving it a shot without voice. It'll honestly be pretty crappy in some parts, but most of the important text should be readable during lulls in the combat.

There's one mission in Blue Planet War in Heaven (actually a bonus campaign, selectable in the campaign room) where you can fly a frigate. I thought it was pretty cool but that's because I designed it :v:

This game is so loving amazing it blows my mind every time. My only complaint is how lovely the mission where you have to disable the Sathana's beam cannons is. This mission has always been my kryptonite in Freespace 2.

So when I check out the ships in the tech room, it crashes. When I click the Ulysses it loads up as does the Hercules but the image looks a bit distorted. When I click any of the other ships below those two, it crashes. The music also feels a little distorted like it's skipping somewhat. In the training mission, every now and then a certain area in space gets all green and polygonal.

Anyone else experience any of this? The whole thing feels a bit unstable to me.

This is definitely not supposed to happen and therefore almost certainly fixable.

If you're willing to invest about ~5 minutes I think we can sort it out. Can you run a debug build (it should have a D or the word Debug in the file name and be located in your FreeSpace 2 folder, assuming you installed FSOpen), then go to FreeSpace2/data/, open the file called fs2_open.log, and post the contents?

Since it is huge you should probably use pastebin or

The debug log gives information on your computer's video hardware, the file setup of your FreeSpace 2 folder, and a couple other important things.

Hah yeah, I just finished War In Heaven and it got frantic enough that I couldn't follow the text quite often like in Delenda Est, I totally missed the dialogue where they were overloading the beams. Had no idea what the countdown was about, but by the time it triggered I'm right on top of the Carthage and its escorts and in a full on corvette-disarming-flak-dodging-oh-god-don't-let-a-beam-hit frenzy anyway. Also UEF missiles are stupidly good, spamming Darts absolutely eats a formation, the Paveway is so easy to use combined with reverse thrust, and then there's the Slammer... Plus there are a lot more close-packed formations it seems. I managed to eat Sagittarius in Deals in Shadows by strafing the whole wing with Hellfire splash damage.

Great campaign, and I'm definitely looking forward to replaying it once the voice patch hits. And for those of you reading who are just installing FSO, I highly recommend playing the two Blue Planet campaigns. Even if you don't like the storytelling style or the story, the combat missions are challenging and frantic, and I especially appreciate the thought put into the military tactics used. It's cool to see a chain of command that recognizes disabling beam cannons as the single most important thing a fighter does.

I will analyze your nervous system for beer money
On the first TAG missile mission, on Normal difficulty if you TAG a ship the beam cannons usually don't even kill the ship by itself. They should have made it so that using the non-seeking TAG is a death sentence to whatever you TAG, whereas beams sometimes miss with the aspect-seeking TAG because the electronics had to be less sophisticated due to the seeking system, or something.

Also the Sathanas mission where you disable the beam cannons is awful because the hit collision on the beams is really wonky, and the wingmen 9/10 times can't fulfill the secondary mission to kill the flak battery. I replayed that mission about 6 times on my last run-through and you're basically at the mercy of the support ship to determine whether you can nail all objectives or not.

Also, does anyone use those explosive projectile warhead torpedoes that unlock late in the game? They're supposedly an anti-bomber weapon, but they're slow and non-seeking so unless you are luckily flying right at the bomber wing you'll just outright miss a lot of times. Did anyone come up with a creative use for those?

Okay, try moving MV_Advanced out of your mediavps_3612 folder, and put it somewhere outside your FreeSpace 2 directory (or just delete it if you don't mind redownloading it later). Your video card is on the low end of the support spectrum.

If that doesn't work, try running without the MediaVPs.

ed: You could also try adding -novbo and -no_set_gamma to your command line.

It's a lot easier to just blow up the target fighters yourself rather than putz around with the TAGs. They aren't very evasive, and you can usually just sidle up
behind them and take down the entire wing.

I got rid of MV_Advanced but it was still crashing bad so I just disabled the MediaVPs and the tech room worked perfectly and there were no crashes when loading a mission. However, the weird polygonal nebula looking things were still appearing. Also, when I target a ship, a big pink polygonal object resembling it would pop up to the right of my cross hair. I don't remember getting these when I first played FS2. Do you have any idea what this could be? Thanks for all the help so far btw.

edit: played some more with it. I found out for sure it's the MediaVPs. I have to click no mod on the launcher rather than just set all the options off for it to work at all. Not sure why they're so volatile. Also, the polygonal things from targeting a ship go away when you turn off the show target ship option (something like that) in the detail section in the in game video options. The polygonal nebula things go away when I turn off the show planets/nebulae option in the same detail section above. Any way to fix these problems without just turning them off?

I'm not sure, I'll check it out. This is probably some kind of weird issue with your video hardware or drivers, the series of card you're running has some known problems with FSO. The game is usually rock-stable even with MediaVPs.

Rotational animation is possible (guns flipping out when armed, panels opening when you hit afterburners, gravity decks spinning, stuff like that). You can also use ugly hacks with invisible pivot points to fake translational animation.

Okay if anyone else is retarded as I am, after you have used the Freespace 2 Open Installer to download FS2 Open and the updated graphics pack you have to then get the updated launcher

After you've installed all that run the Launcher.exe thats now in your FS2 folder.

You have to actually select and load the updated graphics mod.

This is the mod folder you have to select for basic Freespace 2 with shiny graphics. ( MediaVPs_3612 )

Make sure your radar range is set to infinite (there should be a key in the keybindings menu that lets you toggle through it.) You should see a wavering, fuzzy dot.

If that doesn't work try disabling the 3D radar in the launcher and go back to the old school 2D.

This is a stupid little usability problem that popped up even in retail FS2. We should really patch in a way to force radar range in the mission script.

The only knock against it for me is no voice acting, im fine with reading the in-between mission briefs but in game its a distraction and makes the battles seem a bit more sterile then they really are.

You can ignore all those installer errors, they're dumb and a result of the fact that the community consistently fails to fix its poo poo. None of them will be fatal, they're just a result of those (nonessential) items no longer being available for download.

The launcher should go in the root FreeSpace 2 folder, yeah. If you're getting that error, try using WXLauncher (googling WXLauncher should bring you there).
