here's my question:

As a jailbroken dude on umm... 4.3.3 who has never unlocked... can I unlock now?

And bonus question, which may be better for another thread: Can I get a prepaid MICROSIM in Switzerland?

If you have one of the following basebands, ultrasn0w will unlock you:

Apple can unlock your (American) phone? I don't think so. It's usually the carriers that offer this service anyway (who of course do it through Apple, but I don't think people ever just bring the phone to Apple and say "unlock plz"). On AT&T and Verizon in the US, I don't think they offer this service anyway, and this page seems to agree with me.

Are you sure your sister isn't confused about factory unlocked iPhones, which are now available in America?

So I thought I'd check in and see what the current state of jailbreaking was for iPad 2s, feeling confident since I'd avoided updating mine, and was still running 4.3.2. Whoops! Looks like my hesitation's hosed me, since now they're signing 4.3.5 and jailbreakme.com only works with 4.3.3.

I feel like I already know the answer to this, but I have to ask-- am I screwed?

Yep, unless you've been backing up your SHSH blobs like a good lil jailbreaker, then you're screwed. :(

TinyUmbrella saves any SHSH blob that Apple is currently signing, regardless of what you have installed on your device.

oh god, it's.... THE DOOOO!
I just bought an iPhone 4 from a friend who I had previously helped jailbreak the phone. It is at 4.3.3 and I made sure to save the SHSH blobs on my PC and Cydia. So he just sold it to me and it's still at 4.3.3 but it obviously has all his music, contacts, etc and I want to get a simcard for the phone so I decided I wanted to restore it to a clean 4.3.3, get a simcard, put my contacts on then use Jailbreakme.com to jailbreak it after.

I'm using Windows 7 x64 and using TinyUmbrella, latest version. I first tried restoring the phone without putting it into DFU mode - so I had TinyUmbrella change the host file to Cydia. Shift+Left clicked restore, selected the 4.3.3 file. It restored and went through all the motions but right at the end spat me out with the 1013 error.

I realise that its meant to do that but I've tried the fix recover and exit recovery button.

I right click the device and click 'exit recovery' it shuts down and reboots the phone like it should but sticks me right back at the connect to itunes section. The Fix recovery does a bit of stuff on the phone using the LimeRa1n exploit I guess and then spat me out at the connect to Itunes screen, and when connected to the PC is still in recovery mode.

Any help?

Tinyumbrella reports the firmware is 4.3.3 and the baseband is 04.10.01-ICE_2_13

Anything I'm missing?

Edit: Nevermind, unplugging it from the PC as the limera1n exploit was doing its thing seems to have fixed it and spat me out at the emergency call screen where I could then set up the phone.

I bought a new laptop that finally has a battery that lasts longer than 30 minutes so I thought I might finally look into tethering and was wondering if anyone here who has experience with it could fill me in on the basics. What is considered the best app for tethering these days? How badly is AT&T cracking down on it? Is it worth the hassle?

I've been tethering with mywi (and now tetherme) since mywi came out years ago. I tether to my ipad mostly, but also occasionally to my laptop in a pinch. mywi was just a few bucks when I got it, and mywi on-demand is awesome because it lets an ipad turn on/off the iphone tether as needed, which is cool (but uses bluetooth which is a bit slower.) But something happened in ios 4.2.x and mywi stopped working reliably. So I bought tetherme for $3 and it works fine. I do 5-6GB per month every month and have had no hassle from AT&T. I suspect if you tether your PC and torrent 20GB of linux ISOs every month you might get a notice or something.

I miss mywi ondemand though.

I don't know if this is the right place to ask, but everyone seems to know their tethering. The place where I'm living has a huge wifi dead spot that covers the deck where the grill lives. This is an awesome place to sit with the iPad, and I was wondering if pdanet or one of the other programs would let me put my phone in a spot where it gets wifi (probably 15-20 feet away from where I want to sit) and then tether my iPad to it. I still want to use the house wifi, not the 3G connection. Will that work?

Tethering uses the phone's 3G connection. The best thing for you to do would be to buy a repeater or something to extend your WiFi's range.

This. Just get two Linksys routers that you can replace the firmware with DD WRT and make the secondary router into a repeater. You won't get as fast of a connection off the second router but it's an easy way to make one.

There's a few way you can do this.

1. If you have a laptop, place it where it can pick up the wi-fi signal and close enough to the dead spot to provide a good enough signal. Then set up an ad-hoc wifi connection. (it's pretty easy, just google it) Then let the iPad connect to that ad-hoc network you just created.

2. Same as what the guy above said, but you only need one dd-wrt compatible router. Pick up a dd-wrt compatible router, flash dd-wrt on it and set it up as a wireless repeater. This is a bit more involved, but there's decent tutorials for it out there.

3. Pick up a decent wireless router and a long enough ethernet cable. Connect the new router to the old router with the ethernet cable. Turn off DHCP on the new router and set it up as a wireless switch, essentially expanding the wi-fi coverage at your house. This is pretty easy to do, so don't get intimidated. I understand if you don't want to run wires all over the place though.

4. Play around with the placement of your existing wi-fi router.

Actually, MyWi (MiWi?) can indeed be used to bridge to a second wifi network. At least on an iPhone 4.

I'm not entirely sure this is the right thread, but here goes..

I have a jailbroken iPad 1 and a European account with all the apps I use daily. Some time ago I discovered Netflix and all the wonders of streaming movies. Unfortunately the Netflix app isn't available to us filthy Europeans. I looked around in Cydia but I have only been able to find apps that should improve the Netflix experience.

Is there some Netflix app out there I can use to get on my account from my iPad, where can I find it, and how do I install it? I'd rather not set up a seperate US iTunes account just to download one app and then miss out on all the other apps I usually use. :(

I have no idea how Netflix works as far as detecting your location via your IP, and I guess we're to assume you already have that all worked out with having and paying for a Netflix account in Europe.

But with regard to the app itself, you can have apps from multiple Apple accounts on one device at the same time. You won't "miss out" on all the other apps you usually use. I've personally done this since my (primary) account is American, but I live in Taiwan and some local businesses have Taiwan-only apps, I can attest to the fact that it works without problem. You need to enter separate account credentials to update, but it sounds like you'll be in my boat where 99% of the time it's my "primary" account that's updating apps so I very rarely have to worry about switching accounts on the device itself.

Is there any thing that can remove or widen the distance of the backwards and forwards track selection from the home screen?

I'm talking about if you press the sleep/wake button then double click the home button twice. Which brings up the music controls from the top of the screen.

I always start my music this way. And some how I tend to hit back or forwards and not play somewhat regularly. I don't even have fat fingers, they are just all close together.

It's a pain cause I listen to long dj mixes, that go anywhere from two hours to more than nine hours. I lose my place and it's so annoying.

Excellent. I'm at work now, but I made a US iTunes account and downloaded the Netflix app just to test if I could. No problems so far.

I'll edit this post when I get home and test it on the iPad.

The People's Tight End.
I have a sneaky suspicion that the latest version of Cydia is not fully compatible with firmware 3.1.3 (possibly all 3.x series). Does anyone on iOS 4 have this issue?

Basically, after installing a Cydia app, it'll ask me to Restart Springboard. I click the button and the screen goes black with the rotating circle animation.. and it hangs there. I left it going for about 15-20 minutes the other night. Only way to get out of it is to do a hard poweroff (power button + home button hold). On reboot, everything is fine, but it makes it a real pain to install stuff.

This is on my old iPhone 3G which I'm using as a glorified iPod Touch now. I had to do the old Exit Recovery from Tiny Umbrella to get it to load 3.1.3, I'm wondering if something went wacky with that.

Any ideas, or is it just poo poo out of luck and I should go back to 4.2.1?

Apple processes millions of transactions a second. It's not really in their best interest to also send out emails to notify their users of each and every purchase. Their standard practice is to group all your purchases together and notify you of them via email on a weekly basis.

What is the "best" way to downgrade from iOS 5 beta 4 to 4.3.3?

The last time I tried, I needed to use fixrecovery43.exe because the recovery wouldn't finish the progress. ("Exit Recovery" wouldn't work from TinyUmbrella as well as other "Exit Recovery" applications)

Is there a "cleaner" method to downgrade? (also, if I downgrade to 4.3.5 will that downgrade my baseband so it's an older version similar to the one included with 4.3.3? I'm worried about what might break using the iOS 5 baseband with 4.3.3 firmware)

Richman777

You can't downgrade your baseband. I'm assuming the downgrade process is still the same as the iOS 5 beta install is different so the downgrade works differently.

What baseband you have doesn't matter with the iOS version you have.

I'd just follow the millions of guides out there...using the fixrecovery program doesn't do anything wrong so there really isn't anything bad about using it.

Well, I was on 4.3.3 until yesterday when my phone suddenly shutdown and then went into a recovery loop that even fixrecovery couldn't fix.

I was just making a phone call when this happened.

I did have the phone jailbroken and very, very few Cydia applications installed so I really don't know what happened and it never happened before... The reason I'm skeptical about fixrecovery43.exe is because when I downgraded last time that is what I used and it scares me about what happened yesterday that it might happen again if I use the same downgrade method.
