I could name stuff I like but basically I know little that is even slightly obscure. Any directions to look?

Theres a ton of cool 70s hard rock bands that never made it that big or have been left out of the classif rock radio playlists. Check out these dudes:

Hawkwind (kind of like Pink Floyd, spacey and sloppy at times, but they have some good riffs and are pretty accessible)
Eloy (see above, but not sloppy)
Sir Lord Baltimore (heavy blues, like Sabbath but more rockin')
Blue Cheer (loud, heavy and simple)
Pink Fairies (see above, Hawkwinds drug dealers)
The first couple King Crimson albums
Wishbone Ash
The Sonics (classic garage rock, think Louie Louie. Some garage rock made it on the radio, but it's largely forgotten, if you like it check out the Nuggets series)
MC5 (big influence on punk, looooooud and fun, their second album is much much poppy and very good)
The Stooges (see above but they got heavier and less radio friendly as they went along)

Doo Do nailed it. King Crimson got more and more rock oriented before the split in 1975, so you might venture beyond the first couple albums. "Red" was the final before said split, and is a masterpiece.

I'm a huge fan of MC5, the Ramones and the Dead Kennedys.

I'm looking for something more rockabilly. And for once, less hardcore.

BTBAM has gone through a pretty huge sound shift in their career. Their first three albums are mostly grind/death metal/metalcore, then after that they turned into a prog metal band. I'm assuming because you also like Animals as Leaders that you are more into the proggier side of it. What specifically are you looking for/avoiding? Here's some more general modern metal/core with a prog bent.

Periphery
Cynic
Ever Forthright
The Faceless
Rolo Tomassi
Dillinger Escape Plan
IWRESTLEDABEARONCE

Out of all though, I'd say definitely check out Cynic and Ever Forthright. They're all great bands and you will begin to realize that metal is an incredibly broad genre of music. It's not all just people screaming into mics and doing arpeggios/harmonies.

If you like The Sonics, I would say avoid the Nuggets and Pebbles compilations as they will probably just bore you. The Seeds and 13th Floor Elevators are like the best bands on there. Instead, check out the Back From The Grave compilations that Crypt Records released in the late 80s/early 90s if you can track them down. I think there are eight volumes. It's mostly stuff from super obscure bands that were just as loud and raucous as The Sonics were but they cut only a single, or two, maybe, before calling it quits.

Also w/r/t the dude asking for similar stuff to The Cramps, why the gently caress have none of you said The Gun Club?!? Get their first two albums, Fire Of Love and Miami. Kid Congo Powers played in both bands, and he has a new band (Kid Congo And The Pink Monkey Birds) who put out a record on In The Red this year that is great. Maybe try The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion? Brimstone Howl? Rocket From The Crypt? Flat Duo Jets? Johnny Thunders? If you're interested in rockabilly, get some Hasil Adkins.

They get lumped in with punk music because they played at CBGB's but they really don't fit the bill at all.

Still more punk than Blondie though...

Can someone recommend me some beautiful loving music? I've been listening to Harold Budd these days, both his solo work and his collaborations with Eno(The Pearl in particular), and the best way I can describe this music is concentrated beauty. It's not always to my taste (at times I prefer something grimier, somehow) but I would like to add more albums to my rotation. I'm leaning toward piano music but it isn't necessary. I'm familiar with Eno too, of course.

I tried asking on the last page but I didn't get a response. I'm looking for psychedelic synthpop like Black Moth Super Rainbow. I already know of the members' solo work and their collab with the Octopus Project but I'm looking for more psychedelic music with analog synths, electric piano, mellotron, etc. it doesn't matter what period it's from or if it's something obvious I may have overlooked.

Early Emperor, and mid to late '90s Behemoth might do it. Also check out Bal-Sagoth for over the top fantasy based symphonic BM. Darkmoon Warrior might fit the bill as well, but they're pretty whiny.

If you like folk-based BM, check out Kampfar, as they're a bit symphonic as well.

I don't know how familiar you are with these bands, since they're relatively well known, but Yndi Halda, Mono (Hymn to the Immortal Wind), The Evpatoria Report (Golevka) and The Ascent of Everest (How Lonely Sits the City) all have a similar aesthetic to GY!BE. A Silver Mt. Zion as well, if you haven't heard of them already.

Get a hold of the Mono & World's End Girlfriend collaboration Palmless Prayer/Mass Murder Refrain too. It plays on the Modern Classical sound that's present in Post-Rock more than the aforementioned bands tend to.

IT KEEPS HAPPENING
Past couple days I've been listening to jazz musicians like Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Thelonius Monk, Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, etc. and my last.fm recs are starting to fill with other classic jazz artists. Previously I'd considered most jazz to be impressive-if-inaccessible music but it's really beginning to resonate with me. I figure last.fm's got me covered for all the classics. This has got me curious though- are there any must-know highlights in contemporary jazz? I am ignorant as all hell about this genre and don't have any clue how to find new jazz to listen to beyond following last.fm.

BonHair

If you can find any local or semilocal venues, check them out! Jazz is often much better live! I know how you feel though, finding names isn't easy. A general tip is to look up the members of whatever band you are listening to and check if they are playing in other constellations (hint: Most of them are).

Here are a few names I like:
One of the best bands in Denmark: Ibrahim Electric:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tq_8_bUceoQ&feature=related
A bit of an acid Doors-like sound by a Guitar/Hammond/Drums trio

Another semidanish trio: Phronesis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ly8KniNgkXo
Bass/Drums/Piano. I don't really know what to say except that the bass player is amazing.

And lastly a great international name: Medeski/Martin/Wood: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6ygZ4_1d3A
Another trio: Keyboards (of all sorts)/Bass/Drums. They do a lot of different stuff, so shop around!

I guess what makes cunninlyguists kinda interesting is that they are a southern group operating in the east coast underground tradition. there are number of other groups that have that similar backgrounds and philosophies. for example, you could compare kno to say 9th wonder or the are or khyrsis or s1 etc. since that is dating myself a little bit, you might look to big krit or freddie gibbs (although not a southerner) as examples today.

and i guess more traditional southern influences are also worth checking out so at the least goodie mobb and outkast.

However, if you are just getting into hip hop i would listen to the east coast roots in the native tongues and such as ultimately only east coast rap is what matters.
