If you're asking me to explain the recs, I was just throwing out movies that start out somewhat normal but proceed to get goofy and violent in a self-aware fashion.

Crank 2 started out looking like a normal sequel but halfway through they decided to see how far off the rails they could take the movie. Making it both goofy and violent, and it couldn't have had a more self aware ending than what it did. I haven't seen many movies that let its audience know in no uncertain terms "gently caress you, this is your ending, like it or not". Its bizarre but I loved it.

Slow train coming
This AMC marathon has got me in the mood for mob movies.

I am a huge fan of:
Godfather I and II
Goodfellas
Casino
Carlito's Way
Once Upon A Time In America
Mean Streets
Untouchables
Donnie Brasco
A Bronx Tale

Also love Boardwalk Empire and The Sopranos, of course.

I recently saw "Mad Dog and Glory", which was pretty disappointing considering the two lead actors are De Niro and Bill Murray.

Any recommendations?

The Departed: Scorsese having some fun with his gangster-film mode, if you haven't seen it already. Not his most artistically credible work, but definitely one of the most entertaining.

City of God: absolutely fantastic Brazilian film about the descent of Rio de Janeiro's dirt-poor favelas into drug baron warzones, seen through a generation of young slum kids from the 1960s to 70s, many of whom become notorious outlaws. I realise the prospect of subtitles turn some people off but this is a great production that matches brutal realism in the characters and plot with imaginative, energetic direction and soundtracking.

Animal Kingdom: understated, off-key Australian film inspired by real events in Melbourne gang history, about a teenage boy taken under the wing of his extended family, who also happen to be an unnervingly tight-knit clan of bankrobbers whom the police are hellbent on annihilating.

Miller's Crossing is the Coen brothers' charming, irreverent take on the gangster genre with Gabriel Byrne as a relentlessly wiseass Irish mob consigliere who manipulates the hell out of a rapidly escalating gang war to his own ends.

Mesrine, Parts 1 & 2: French double bill biopic with Vincent Cassel as Jacques Mesrine, a charismatic, stunningly arrogant outlaw whose exploits in bank robbing, prison-breaking, police-taunting, and all-around badassery across two continents put Dillinger to shame.

Also recommending. It's very intense yet understated. It's also the only Australian film I've actually liked so far.

I come across Australian films that are about "Australia's most notorious criminal" and they always seem to be about someone new (Chopper, Ned Kelly, that Underbelly show, another one that escapes me at the moment) but no, I haven't seen it. I'll give it a shot if that's a recommendation

Would anyone mind recommending me sci-fi movies that are terrible at the science part. I just watched this island earth and in it there's a ridiculous scene where three scientists hide behind a small metal slab so that an alien listening in can't hear them, you can see bits of it in the clip below starting at one minute in.

I'm hoping there are more daffy sci-fi movies that make mistakes like that, thanks.

Ugh, I wish I could contribute to the thread more and not just pop in asking for recommendation, but well, here I am again.

First, please recommend me some movies in which the main scenery is either urban decayish or ghost townish. I also love the quirky, remote smalltown feel à la Twin Peaks. Movies that have come close are:

Identity (nice setting, lovely thriller)
The Pledge (Loved this one)
Insomnia
Badlands
Easy Rider
Winter's Bone

I asked this a while back before but got only a few replies that really didn't fit the bill.

Secondly, are there any good space dramas / thrillers? I love especially those in which the isolation in vast darkness is strongly present. Bonus points if it has beautiful scenes where people either stare or float into space. Some movies I've seen:

2001: A Space Odyssey
Alien
Sunshine (good for two thirds of the movie, then went into poo poo)
Moon
Pandorum (crap)
Event Horizon (nostalgic crap)

For the small almost ghost town setting I really enjoyed Red Hill It has a Western movie atmosphere and I'll admit a couple of moments where you will chuckle at the townfolks idiocy but nothing that should ruin the movie for you.

For staring into space, again I recommend Silent Running which a majority of those titles you listed drew inspiration from.

As far as mostly-abandoned ghost towns, I have an obscene amount of love for Last Man Standing, the Western/gangster movie update of Dashiell Hammett's novella Red Harvest, previously adapted as Yojimbo and A Fistful of Dollars. Set in a dusty Texas border town during Prohibition, the movie stars Bruce Willis, Christopher Walken, and William Sanderson (you know him from Blade Runner, or as E.B. Farnum in Deadwood) as a crazy coot of a bartender. Lots of cool suits, hats, tommy guns, and even Judd Apatow's hot wife Leslie Mann as a prostitute.

For a horror option, Silent Hill is set in a super-creepy dying rural town that transforms into what I always envisioned hell to look like.

Thanks for the recommendations so far! I've already seen quite a few of them (Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, The Wicker Man and Silent Hill) and I'm not in the mood for Béla Tarr. I put Silent Running, Red Hill and The Bothersome Man on my watchlist. The latter has actually piqued my interest before but I couldn't find a copy of it back then.

Slightly different request.

Recommend me a movie to "listen" to. I have an assignment for class where I have to listen to a movie without the aid of the screen. The goal is to study the sound design. We are to write specifically about a particular scene, 3-15 minutes.

I have 5.1, if that affects your consideration.

Looking for two different kinds of recommendations...

1. Any good recent animated(CGI) films. The last one I saw was Finding Nemo for reference. I thought I might try Kung Fu Panda(is that any good?) Anything else like that I should look into?

2. Thriller/Drama/Horror Films where "the bad guy/antagonist wins". I realize that's kind of a spoiler since I'll know how any movie recommended basically ends but that's pretty much the only way I can describe what I'm looking for. Skeleton Key is a pretty decent example of this just off the top of my head.

1. Wall-E, Up, and Toy Story 3 are all incredible -- easily my favorite Pixar movies, and their most recent three (up until this summer's Cars 2).

2. Check out Angel Heart, Spoorloos (aka the original Dutch version of The Vanishing), Twin Peaks (yes, the entire TV series, which is only one short excellent season and one full-length season with ups and downs), The Thing, Session 9, Silent Hill (kind of), the Dawn of the Dead remake (and probably countless other horror movies), and while some would argue, I think Chinatown definitely counts.

1. I really liked Rango, but mostly for the unique animation and art style, rather than the story. It also fits the bill for another post in this thread asking for colourful movies. Even though it's 100% 3D CGI, it was never released "in 3D" because 3D glasses would have dulled the colour. If you just want to see another Finding Nemo though, anything else by Pixar won't disappoint, they kind of set the standard. Try "Up" or "Ratatouille"
