You've inspired me to dig out the Close Combat games because I haven't played them for years.

edit: okay, having spent the last two hours reading up on the series and not really reaching an answer I should probably ask you all properly: what's the current latest, greatest or fan-favourite version of Close Combat? (no thread on the forums :( ) The last time I played it properly was around 10 years ago with CCIII, but there's been numerous releases since then and the series has changed hands a lot.

CC3 and CC5 are my favorites. CC3 is where they really perfected the combat dynamics, and CC5 is where they perfected the theater command system.

If you want to fight with the same group of men every time and take whatever the game throws at you situation wise, CC3 is the way to go. CC3 is very linear - the Germans will always approach Moscow, and the Russians will always take Berlin. It's a ton of fun though, and you'll find yourself checking your squads after each battle to see who was awarded medals and who died (and who got acts of cowardice :stare:).

If you want to have theater command and move all sorts of battle groups around and fight the battles out, go for CC5. CC5 is the place where you can win the battle of France for the Germans. This is my personal favorite because the scenario editor allows you to do anything you want with the map. Want to play as a country being attacked from all sides? Make a scenario. Want to play as a country invading with paratroopers to the north and sea landings in the south? Make a scenario.

CC1 is way too old for my tastes, and CC4 is basically CC5 beta: winter mode. I've had a lot of fun with CC2 and it's "rush to grab the bridges" game play, but in the end it's not 3 in combat terms and it's too linear to compete with 4 or 5. If I had to pick just one I'd go with CC3 or CC5.

EDIT: If you're interested in historical context, here's where the different games fall:

CC1: Normandy, starting about 30 days in once all the landings are done and the paratroopers have linked up.

CC2: Operation Market Garden. The allies try to land a bunch of paratroopers along a very long stretch of road in the low countries to make a very thin beachhead into Germany. Hilarity ensues.

CC3: Down and dirty Eastern Front Combat. Barbarossa to the fall of Berlin.

CC4: Battle of the Bulge. Cold, tired, and under-supplied Americans face the only running tanks the Germans have left.

CC5: Normandy done right. Starts on D-Day with beach landings and paratroopers scattered all over the place.

I'm still depressed from beating Mirror's Edge. I can't believe it's already over. :smith:

I used to love The Specialists. http://store.steampowered.com/app/90004

I dunno why, but I'd stick Mirror's Edge in the same boat as The Specialists. Anyone have any games like this? I wanna go with Brink, but I don't know just how good the mechanics are. I'm thinking of getting a Game Fly trial membership so I can try out Brink/Call of Juarez.

Anyone have any PS3 recommendations?

Brink is a disaster. There are better paper-doll dress-up games, and that is really the only area in which it is even satisfactory. And I enjoyed the gameplay more than the average person, I think.

Thanks a lot for that! Very helpful. I think I played every game up to CC3 but nothing later. As far as the modern Matrix remakes go, it seems that they have merged all of the grand strategy elements and it's only the scenarios that differ now. At least that is my impression. I might check out CC5 as well as one of these re-releases.

In the process of searching I did end up discovering this fan remake of Panzer General which is pretty incredible (and the creator went on to work on Panzer Corps, recently released).

Whilst I disagree that BRINK is a disaster overall as a game (when you get enough people in a room it's a good multiplayer game), I cannot warn you enough about not purchasing it because you'd like some parkour style player movement. What Mirrors Edge did fantastically BRINK does not do at all well. It was one of their selling points but they bungled it, it's clunky and combined with the sometimes laggy matches, does not feel smooth at all (it's basically just pulling yourself over surfaces whilst mashing jump).

The only reason anyone should buy BRINK is if they re-release it as a budget title in the future or something, so that it gets a good stable playerbase - I say that as someone who bought it at release and still owns it. Although there's people playing it it's probably circling the drain right now :(

I need some PSP recommendations, preferably RPGs or games that are not too action-heavy as I find the PSP very uncomfortable to hold. No remakes/ports of games that were previously released in the US as I likely already have them and/or have played them on their original system.

I think I must have lower standards when it comes to portable games, as I've been lying around playing Legend of Heroes: A Tear of Vermillion—it's almost as lovely and generic as a JRPG can get, but it makes me feel nostalgic for Lunar, and it's something I can play after I've turned my brain off before I go to sleep. So I possibly don't care if it's a mediocre/bad game as long as it tells a story, is entertaining to some extent, and doesn't make my hands cramp up.

Hey guys my video card recently took a poo poo and as of right now it looks like it will be a while before I can get a new system. So I was wondering if there were any decent "low spec" co-op games that will run on Win7 64bit.

The card that I am running right now is an old ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT. I can manage to play Last Stand in DaW II Retrobution but on very low settings and some lag.

As for genre, just co-op.

Thanks.

Maybe a bit lower spec than you're after but have you tried the Sven Co-op mod for Half-life? You can play through the whole storyline of Half-Life and Opposing Force co-op style, but there's also a ton of other maps for it.

There was a mention of port royal 2 a few pages ago and I wanted to ask. Is there something a little more modern with a similar flavor as that? The top three I came across were either Patrician 4, East India Company, or Dawn of Discovery. All though I might just pick up Dawn of Discovery since I enjoyed the demo and it's pretty cheap now. Though it felt more like a town builder than a trading/production game. Can any one comment on the other two?

Also, Port Royal 3 will be released in 2012, which is great news.

Patrician is trade heavy, Dawn of Discovery emphasizes town building. Personally I found the Nintendo DS version of Dawn of Discovery more enjoyable because of its tiny maps and short supply chains, YMMV.

You should get a kick out of The Last Express by Smoking Car Productions.

Compiled from Wikipedia:

It is an adventure game set on the Orient Express in 1914, the player takes on the role of Robert Cath, an American doctor on the train's final journey from Paris to Constantinople (modern Istanbul) before World War I. It is noted as being one of the few video games that attempts to realistically simulate real time. One of the game's most notable uses of this technique during a concert, in which two of the non-player characters perform a piano/violin duet that lasts approximately twenty minutes of real-time: the player character is free to sit down and enjoy the music, or move as he pleases. Additionally, the game features multiple endings; about thirty are "fatal", in which Cath is killed or arrested, and four are "non-fatal" endings, of which only one is considered to be the proper ending.

It's quite interesting and pretty, you can see screenshots and buy it HERE from GoG.

Depending on her humor, the Conker 64 remake on the original Xbox scales extremely well on the 360.

I'm looking for a first or third person shooter that has a survival mode (or features it) with enemies coming in waves or just a game with tons of enemies on screen, preferably on PC but I do have a 360 and PS3.

If there is a very good mod for a game that adds a survival mode I would also be interested. Multiplayer isn't required but it is preferred.

I like: Killing Floor, Skulltag, Serious Sam, Left 4 Dead, Painkiller
I kinda like: Resident Evil 5 Mercenaries
I don't like: Gears of War, Halo, Bulletstorm, Red Faction: Armageddon

If you've still got a PS2, King's Field: The Ancient City is the best example of a 3D Metroidvania-style game I've ever played.

On Wii Virtual Console, try Wonder Boy in Monster World (Genesis) or Dynastic Hero (TG-CD). They're different versions of the exact same game, with neither being clearly superior to the other, so it pretty much comes down to whether or not you want CD sound. I don't remember if there's a price difference.

My older consoles got soaked in a basement flood awhile back, but I've still got some ps2 games to play, so I'll be replacing the ps2 anyway if it won't run on the ps3. I'm in need of an RPG game with lots and lots of items to buy/find/make to let me make a totally badass-looking main character. Basically I need a fun game (preferably for DS) that lets me collect a lot of equipment and let me dress up my paper doll super battlemage wizard ranger berserker and kick rear end. Any help?

e: I've also played the Diablo games, Planescape Torment, Dark Messiah, all the Final Fantasy games, just trust me when I say I've played a lot. I'm not looking so much for a fantastic old game on GoG as I am looking for a clean-looking RPG that I can take with me where I go and have lots of customization for my character.

I've heard good things about The World Ends With You, but the customization part is the real stickler. If I give my character a bunch of cool pins and stuff do they change or do they just get a new move?
