It's entirely meaningful, it just isn't recent. The Teutonic Knights grabbed the land (on a neighboring Polish duke's invitation, more or less) and then a bunch of German settlers were moved in to take it over.

Well Saxony uses it only for people from the area I mentioned (who are mostly quite far from speaking hochdeutsch). No discriminating going on against hochdeutsch here.

The Baltic languages are more closely related to Slavic than to other branches of the Indo-European family but they're considered distinct. Sorry.

I keep tabs on a few country-specific T&T thread and I gotta say that this is by far the most amusing one for an outsider looking in, in terms of the weird esoteric arguments y'all seem to have all the time.

I'm going to Berlin this weekend with a friend and I'm not really sure what to do. It'll be my second time in Berlin and I already spent a week+ there doing touristy stuff and just lounging around, and I think it's gonna be the third time my friend's been there. We're not really interested in museums. What kind of open air/outdoor/things on the streets could we do to pass the time during the day? I'm open for suggestions that are off the beaten path (e.g., no Checkpoint Charlie). Also is the Berghrain really that hard to get into/worth it? If it helps my friend is a girl.

You consider going to the Berghain and want things to do this weekend? http://imrauschmitfreunden.de/ have fun! Edit: On it's own this might be a bit confusing. This weekend there is a... let's call it excessive, festival named "Im Rausch mit Freunden" in Berlin. If you are even remotely into electronic music this is mandatory and even if you aren't, it's only 15€. hankor fucked around with this message at 17:08 on Aug 15, 2011 |

There has actually been a long-going debate about whether the city-state of Berlin and the state of Brandenburg should be reunited into a state of Prussia, but there's not much support for the measure. Already economically weak Brandenburg doesn't want to get saddled with non-too-shiny Berlin finances, and the very cosmopolitical Berliners don't want a bunch of province hicks to dictate their policies. It will never happen. As has been mentioned so far, outside of history books and delusional historical revanchists, the term "Prussian" exists only as a Bavarian slur for every north of the Weisswurscht equator (an imaginary geographical line that separates Bavaria from its' northern neighbors). In Munich, we tend to use the term "Saupreiss" , which means "Prussian Pig" Back to the passport questions: You won't be able to keep your other citizenship if you get the German one- and getting it isn't a piece of cake. A Croatian-born friend of mine had to jump through several year's worth of bureaucratic hoops to get there, and he went to school here, speaks perfect German etc. I have both German and Italian passports, but this is only possible because of a special legal agreement between the two nations. There was a very heated and partisan debate about double citizenship in the late 1990ies, the CDU/CSU tried to stir up the anti-foreign vote by outlawing it (they succeeded), so now the laws are very strict.

Is that true?

Yeah, ä is only one letter ae are two. Don't know how that would make any sense. Hell, most older cell phones could only send one sms and would count down from 160. Never was there any sudden jump when I typed ä, ö or ü.

It was something about ä taking more memory than ae but I was also drunk at the time (and a Swiss person told me this, I know they don't use ß, but don't they also not use capital Ä et al as well?) so maybe I remember wrong.
