Went for a ride with some friends today. Had a blast, only broken part of the day was a sway bar link on my buddy's ride that should have been disconnected anyways. I did discover my oil pressure sending unit was leaking today as well. This was also our fist solo trip into a new set of trails. We barely scratched the surface.

I put my jeep in storage the other day...that was a terrible, terrible moment In other news, i have a 2 door 09 Wrangler that might get traded in toward a used 2012 rubicon sometime next year. I want a 4 door rubi, the 2 door wrangler x has been nice but just a bit cramped whenever i had visitors or was dd for the night, or needed to haul things from here to there, etc. It always seems like people hold on to their jeeps for the winter, park them in a resale lot starting early spring, then realize "No poo poo, i might end up *needing* this thing!" and they disappear off of the lots real quick-like. I miss my jeep

I have a dumb question. I'm guessing the answer is "no" even if anyone knows, but hey, figured I'd ask. I had a 2003 Wrangler (Freedom Edition AMERICA!!!), which I tearfully traded in a few years back. I'm looking to get a new 2011 Wrangler soon. For Christmas in 2003, my dad bought me some of the official seat covers for the Jeep (the ridiculously expensive, >$200 ones). I kept them when I traded the Jeep in with the intention of trying to sell them, which I of course did not do. I don't suppose there is any chance those seat covers would work on a 2011, would they? (A guy can dream, can't he...)

I could be wrong though. edit: yeah, it appears that the JK has completely differently shaped seats than the CJ7/YJ/TJ

Anyone want to buy some super nice seat covers for a 2003? Actually, anyone have any recommendations for seat covers for the 2011 that aren't an arm and a leg?

I took my few day old Rubicon out to this trail http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=15 today and had a BLAST. I was crawling over rocks that I could never imagine driving over. I was really lucky to have an experienced friend with me. I probably would have turned around at the first big rocks without his encouragement. As it is, I crossed the "lake" and made it through all the difficult parts of Middle St. Vrain and Coney without a single scratch.

What would cause a caliper to repeatedly lock up? It seized once before, I replaced the caliper, pads, and rotor (it was in need of it). Now, it's doing it again. Also, started noticing a bit of a grinding/rubbing noise from the rear of my '92 XJ when turning right - rear diff?

My stupid loving cherokee block needs to be bored. Can't get away with just a hone job. I was going to do a hone job and have them assemble the thing because the price was right and I don't want to deal with it. Since I need extra machine work and new pistons I'm building the drat thing myself to keep it within budget so I wont be complete tits up when I re-sell it. I need I'm assuming .30 over pistons. Rockauto is where I'm shopping. There are a bunch of different pistons. Sealed power four different part numbers that are apparently compatible with this turd. Can I just slam the cheapest pistons into my cart and call it a day? Hypereutectic; 2 - 1.50mm Groove, 1 - 4.00mm Groove, 1.592 CD, Recessed Head .116 deep; DUROSHIELD® skirt coated piston, 0.931" Pin Dia. VS Hypereutectic; 2 - 5/64 Groove, 1 - 3/16 Groove, 1.592 CD, Recessed Head .116 deep; DUROSHIELD® skirt coated piston, 0.931" Pin Dia. Either one will work right? Oh loving tits what I have I gotten myself into. At least the rings are labeled so I just match them to the piston. Gonna need all sorts of bearings and poo poo too.

Random Offtopic Musing My JEEP is a standard. When it gets to around 2,000 RPMs you can take it out of gear without pressing in the clutch. Then once it settles back down to around 1,000 you can put it back into gear; say from 2nd to 3rd and so on. It this a bad thing to be doing or is it saving me wear and tear on my clutch?

Took a trip to the crash site of a T-33A from back in the 70's. The trail is pretty awesome, not quite as hard as the stuff I was hitting on Sunday but it was a lot of fun. After that we took a trip to Kingston Peak to play in the mud pits there. I am loving the capabilities of my new Rubicon. Shifting without the clutch is fine but you need to be skilled with this practice or you can hurt your synchro over a rather short time. The clutch is just there for start/stops and lazy shifting for the most part. You will get better gas-mileage and performance with the clutch. A skilled person can clutchless shift for tens of thousands of miles and the trany will have no more wear than someone using the clutch. Obviously their clutch would last forever though. You just need to practice doing it and pay attention to your engine revs and your speed when you up/down shift. The goal is to relieve the torque of the engine and the driveshaft from the trany. It's done with rev-matching (also called float) the engine to your speed and gear. Slip out of gear and into neutral. Then float your revs again to match the next gear you are going to hit. Then just slip into that gear, gently but deliberately. Exit/enter your gears when your momentum is steady for a second. Double-clutching on older tranys pretty much used the same steps as I described. Some large trucks still require this. It's a nice trick to learn if your clutch ever fails.

Isn't it very illegal to remove anything from a crash site, especially a military one, even decades later?

InitialDave posted:Isn't it very illegal to remove anything from a crash site, especially a military one, even decades later? That plane is probably still technically government property and I'm sure they'd label it "terrorism". The headlines would read: "MAN STEALS GOVERNMENT PLANE" just to get people to read them, when it all blew over the guy would be a best selling author. ninja edit: the book title would be "How I Was Sent to Gitmo for Cleaning up a National Park"

InitialDave posted:Isn't it very illegal to remove anything from a crash site, especially a military one, even decades later? Yes, it is illegal to remove debris from any historical plane crash site. Also, the stuff is down a 200 yard, 45 degree slope covered in sandy loose rock so hauling airplane parts out of there would be rough...not to mention the 3 hour rock crawl to get there.

Got pics sent to me from the shop doing my cage in my LJ. I became immediately erect. The sound bar will be modified to go where the overhead hoop is. There will also be a harness bar behind the seats, there are sliders to the frame and the cage is through the dash, through the floor to the sliders.

I told myself a zillion times I was not gonna buy a brand new Jeep, but it just worked out great. I was in there way after closing on my test drive, and every time I told them I was gonna go home and sleep on it, they would do something to give me more money. First they gave me $1750 more for my trade than originally quoted, then they gave me a $1000 "customer rebate". Then they knocked my interest from 4.something to 1.9, THEN they gave me $500 off the lifetime warranty package - putting the lifetime warranty at $1400. They dont do lifetime warranties on the drive-train anymore?? edit: I meant where its included in the price of the vehicle. Tacos Al Pastor fucked around with this message at 23:13 on Aug 17, 2011 |

So here's a question. I'm getting custom bumpers built for my Jeep. The fabrication shop asked me what size OD Tubing I wanted to use. I'm not too educated when it comes to metal fabrication. Any ideas on a proper size for front/rear bumpers with nerf style steps that have built in rock sliders?

ThinkFear It's 5 bolts in the back, 2 latches up front. The top can be carried through a door. commissargribb I believe it's because of the windshield sweep, and maintaining the oem lines and triangulation. I'll have some finished pics up later.
