Holy poo poo I saw the episode of Ultimate Car Buildoff where they built that thing. The competition was a mid-engine converted minivan. IIRC, the Astroghini had a huge fuckoff turbo on it that had an inordinately long lag time on it. The 0-60 time was good for a minivan, but once it hit 30-40mph and that thing kicked it, it was almost undriveable because it was so fast and understeery. robotsinmyhead fucked around with this message at 00:49 on Aug 15, 2011 |

As Nero Danced posted:Your pants are safe, and probably will be forever. I swear Honda was using already rusted metal when building some of their cars back then. IIRC, the rubber seals in the back quarter panels where great at protecting the metal, but trapped water and salt and poo poo and rusted the metal. The fix is to remove the seals and apply body sealer.

Oh yeah, you're right. I guess I was thinking FWD because of the way it drove, pushing like a freight train into every turn.

There's more to understeer than drive type - it still has the majority of the weight up front so even with RWD it's going to want to push until the cows come home, right up until you get some snap oversteer by laying into the throttle too much with that turbo (if it still had the turbo, that is).

I know this is a nervous breakdown waiting to happen, but I still sort of want this http://rockford.craigslist.org/cto/2547520485.html No exhaust, power steering leaks, needs a windshield, and the seat mounts are probably a pile of rust, but all the expensive things have been taken care of already. I can only guess what other horrors this is hiding.

Well for $600 you could probably strip it of the good parts and junk the rest and make your money back.

That's still cheap as hell to be rolling in style. Ridiculous local insurance rules aside, I'd buy that for six hundred bucks, and I just bought a Miata yesterday... Edit for some content. A friend of mine is selling his Golf, and that's the actual photo that the dealer put in the ad: I guess it's good if you want to hide lots of small scratches? I offered to take better photos with my SLR, but for now it's stuck with this. mobby_6kl fucked around with this message at 22:29 on Aug 16, 2011 |

He said that there are fiddly bits that seem to croak, but quite a bit of the cars parts are related to the E34. The engine has been rock solid and the transmission has been trouble free. I asked him if he would buy another, and he said in a split second. If you have your own tools and are willing to work around that sweet sweet v12, do it. YMMV.

How many of those can there be left in any condition anywhere? And is that a Gremlin I see behind it?

Yeah that's what you'd usually get for something out of our local scrapyard; I just have an irrational anger towards that phrase (also I once missed out on a perfect parts car because the guy actually scrapped the car and I loving cried).
