We've got a Hyosung dealer here in town and the guy that runs the shop acts like they are Ducati's. From what I've heard the 650(600?) model has an older SV650 engine in it, and the owner says he races one very successfully. He kept trying to get me to trade in my R1 and buy a 600. I had no interest at all but I've always wondered what's the word on these bikes? I see a lot of them used in my area, the cruiser version looks pretty drat nice but would it just be asking for trouble?

I wish I would've screencapped the kid selling one here in town. The loving right clip-on was broken completely off and he tied it on with like a piece of rubber tubing or something. I have no idea how it stayed there and he was totally nonchalant in the ad about it. It also had mismatched bodywork (I'm not sure how since barely anyone owns them) and some kind of aftermarket exhaust most likely shoehorned on so it sounded totally awesome to him.

This about sums up Hyosung owners.

I can believe they're older sv650 motors. Low grade companies like that tend to buy the materials / machinery off bigger brands when it wears out of spec. The bikes are "comparable" in the sense that the best ones the company makes are probably still wildly out of what a big name company would consider "in spec". I mean, it's not a big deal to have your piston diameter measured +/- 0.5mm right?

nsaP

alright?
Hyosungs seem like a bit of junk now, but if the company keeps afloat and suckers keep buying them, they could grow into a decent manufacturer.

Don't get in on the ground floor tho.

I believe Marv compared them to Hyundai and I could see that being the case. In the mid 90s Hyundai was a joke, by the early 2000s they were making decent cars, and now people don't think twice about buying one.

I'd offer around 1800-1900 and see if he bites. It probably needs a carb cleaning and basic maintenance. The guy has probably ridden it enough to break it in - I doubt it's really going to hurt that motor to be honest.

Worst case you can sell it again and almost assuredly get your money back. Doubly so if you get it running well.

nsaP
May 4, 2004

alright?
You're probably going to have to replace some things too, rubber lines and brake lines will dry and crack with sitting. I'd eye it real good and try to get him to take off what you're going to have to do to it. Pop the gas tank and check it too, there's a good chance it's full of rust. You'll have to clean that, and check the lines and filter for rust moving thru.

Pretty much every maintenance item is going to need some attention even tho it has low miles. That said it could still be a good buy, you just have to be aware of work it'll need to get it running well.

I'm not sure how it's lack of break in will affect engine life tho, maybe someone with more knowledge can chime in.

Edit: Just noticed he replaced a heavily clogged fuel filter...yeah...probably rusted tank.

I wouldn't pay more than a grand for it. Low mileage isn't a selling point with motorcycles, it's better to have regular usage over a period of time, especially for a known good engine (like the GS500).

Off the top of my head, you're gonna want to change all of the fluids (oil, brake, fork, shock), as well as fork seals. You're also going to need new tires, a chain, and it does sound like the tank is rusted, so figure $50-100 for supplies for that plus your time, and when all of this was said and done, you'd still have a 9 year old GS500.

What are K1s worth?
http://bc.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-motorcycles-sport-touring-1991-BMW-K1-Very-rare-collector-bike-complete-W0QQAdIdZ292433510

quote:

This is the third of my three bikes that I'm selling due to declining health. I recently bought this 1991 BMW K1 as a restoration project. If you know about K1s, you know what an extraordinary and rare bike the K1 is: a defining moment in BMW history; less than 7000 produced over a 5 year run; in 1991 just over 700 produced and only 170 brought to North America. Learn more here: http://www.motorcycleclassics.com/motorcycle-reviews/1989-1993-BMW-K1.aspx

I won't be able to bring this bike back to showroom condition as I planned. However, you can buy it as-is and ride it now, restore it later. I'm the third owner of this black beauty, having purchased it from the estate of the second owner. It's a complete bike and is mechanically sound, having been shop serviced since 1997 by Cal Moto BMW in Mountainview, California. With just 29,000 miles, it runs like a new bike and needed only a new battery before my incredibly fun 2000 mile ride home.

If my body was up to it, I'd keep this wonderful, thundering bike to ride occasionally but it deserves better than that.

Frankly, the paint on this bike is its weak point. The seller misrepresented its condition to me and I'll not repeat that error. Somewhere in its life, the fairing was repainted in the proper Classic Black Metallic color but it was not clear-coated well and the gloss is not what it should be. In addition, there is some tip-over damage (scratches and minor chipping) on the left side of the bike, easily touched up for daily riding if you choose. Having said that, all of the fairing parts are intact and the whole bike could easily be repainted in proper Glasurit for around $1500.

A Fox "Twin Clicker" shock is fitted, a vast improvement over the stock BMW shock. It could use rebuilding, a service available locally for about $150. The bike also has a built-in, hidden radar detector (that works), as well as an Ungo ignition disabler (that doesn't, as far as I know).

Also included is a complete set of the very rare K1 rear luggage with rain cover and the correct BMW Multivario tank bag. All the luggage pieces are in excellent condition.

No matter how you look at it, this is a lot of bike for the money. It will only appreciate as these become more rare. (the last one to sell locally fetched $9000). It's fast, comfortable, eats up miles at 50 miles/US gal, runs rock steady with laser-accurate handling and one-finger braking. Daily rider now, winter restoration project, and an investment in a true motorcycling classic. Plus, it qualifies for a BC Collector plate for cheap insurance! How can you go wrong?

I'd consider a trade for a well set-up sidecar rig.

Oddball bikes like that hit a sort of weird pricing gap. M For awhile there was a Yamaha GTS down here for sale for under 2k, that started at 4.5k and slowly worked it's way down. I'd keep an eye on it and see how long the ad hangs around unless you have to have it.

The ad is a great example of what you should look for, and it really can't be faked. They're easy to spot because sincerity is so rare in this marketplace. The sale is almost a secondary consideration--it's more like they're conducting interviews to select the next custodian. There's typically so little left to the imagination and so much value add that negotiation becomes tacky. These are the people you want to deal with if you're considering a 1,000-mile fly and ride and need to be in your cube Monday morning and not flipping through two year old Us magazines at Jed's Garage in Podunk, Alabama.

Eh, I'd probably want to pay closer to $2000-$2100 for that, but I'm a cheap bastard.

Waiting until next spring just means you'll be paying more, because riding season is starting. Fall/Winter is the best time to buy.
