I don't see how that makes any sense at all. Why should the nature of the medium prevent criticism of the content or of the people who enjoy that content?

I don't need ten COMEDY IS SUBJECTIVE posts to inform me that people like different things. Some people like The Real Housewives of New Jersey and some people prefer Masterpiece Theatre. I am aware of this. It's this idea that these preferences apparently say nothing about the person that is new to me.

The simple fact that you assumed (incorrectly) about a guy's listening taste, and then followed it up with a smarmy "See, this is why.." line of faux-intelligent bullshit is the reason you're a human being. Not that this will be news to you, either.

Now is not the time to argue with another about podcast. We need have some sort of solidarity until it takes over what we still know as radio so that in 10 or 15 years time, when podcast are the status quo, we can say we were there for genesis and that podcast arent as good as they used to be. Then and only then can we truly and rightfully criticize people for their taste.

Im curious what about that particular episode cemented the meathead opinion in your mind. From what I recall he actually didn't talk that much and the subjects werent very polarizing. He spoke on the unhealthy nature of cigarettes, proper dieting and Americas dominance in the entertainment industry while also making GBS threads on Ted Nugent which arent typical meathead subjects or opinions.

WIth that said I'm not going to say you are wrong in that regad because Joe Rogan has strong meathead tendencies that are still present in him as a result of serious athletic training during his formative years and on through most of his life to be a serious and multiple weight class Tae Kwon Do champion. Some habits especially those that you use to rigidly define your life die hard. But there is a certain charm in that when you understand him and the show on a deeper level.

Before I go any further let me qualify my fandom. I do not think he's a particularly good comedian and while I'm an MMA fan I often times find myself trying to decide if I want to mute the tv and lose the audience vibe because I dont particularly enjoy his perspective on fights. I only say that to make it clear im not one of those superfan types.

Ive been listening since day one because from my point of view the real premise of the show is Joe Rogan is a dynamic personality who as a result of his varied life experiences is supremely curious about all things especially those areas that he feels are being dismissed because any sort of bias or he smells a rat. In conjunction with his general curiosity about taboo subjects he is also invested in the idea that people can evolve in there personal life as the direct result of him making his own conscious decision to never quit on the never ending path of self improvement with tangible results. The podcast has become a way for him to gather like minded individuals who have also made that personal choice to evolve and at least make an attempt at becoming better people. While his advocacy for weed and psychedelics can often times be heavy handed and border on being nothing more than peer pressure I think that end goal is to make the world a better place and he's found away to influence what he sees as positive change through the free flow of ideas and honest opinions.

He's clearly and sometimes embarrassingly wrong about a lot of things and he's just an average guy who tries his best to come to reasonable conclusion and I think the best he hopes for is that if you dont agree with him you at least see where he's coming from and understand the perspective because people are more complex than any one single idea and we should be using the internet to take everything in and find common ground rather than only take in what we choose so we can surround ourselves in an echo chamber. He does sometimes let personal bias get in the way but he's usually the first to admit that and he seems forthcoming with corrections. Ive never checked it out but I know he has a live thread for every podcast and continuously checks his twitter to allow people to point out inconsistencies and its not to save face its because being correct is a primary objective. Its really easy to just write him or anyone off because he has sone points of view that you dont agree with but I think its best if you treat him as a friend who has opinions you dont agree with rather than a public figure with a clear cut agenda of bringing you over to their side no matter the cost. Theres nothing on the line here so you can easily disagree with something he says without feeling the necessity to disregard him as a person.

Thats the primary reason I enjoy these sorts of podcast where the hosts is able to have long form discussions. Its not concentrated into a simple sentence with no room for nuance and you can actually try to gain some perspective on where they are coming from and you're lucky you gain a new perpective rather than an impulse to to come to a quick analog facebook style of like of dislike.

I know ive probably went deeper and responded to thinks you didn't intend to imply but its more a response to some of the other negative but ultimately empty comments about his and others podcast. Also If were to add Brian Redban to the discussion I would have no problem with turning on a dime it the most hypocritical way imaginary because he ads absolutely no value to the show. I dont really have anything against him besides the fact that he stands as the antithesis to my perception of the goals of the show. To hear him speak in a way that makes it clear he's completely content with being the creepy old guy that dates young porn stars and has no intentions of breaking through the current ceiling he finds himself under really kills the vibe. Pus its apparent in his offensively bad grammar that education has never been a concern for him at any point in his life. Joe often says about Detroit that there are people that that as a result of the literacy rate are only as smart oas the people they know. Even though Redban is from Ohio he is a perfect example of that theory.

Basically the long and short of it is if you do choose to continue to listen try to tune into the intent just slightly below the surface and accept that sometimes he'll be flat out wrong about something just as you may from time to time be wrong about something. He may get a little too high and say something like "i thought the were 30 languages" without a hint of irony but i bet he listens to this recordings the next day or twitter comments and probably groans with embarrassment more than we can can imagine since its not our names attached to it. But i think its worth giving him the benefit of the doubt for choosing to not remain ignorant and for going out there on on a limb at least twice a week i the he first place and offering his ideas rather than an image he thinks you should buy into.

EDIT: holy poo poo my post didnt seem that long as I was typing it. Someone say something bad about Greg Proops since I appear to be in blowhard mode and I think Greg could probably use any extra listeners I may convert.

I didn't feel the latest episode as being particularly meat headed either. If you want to listen to a meathead heavy show just listen to any of the MMA centric ones.

I'm in total agreement with you as to why to listen to Joe's show. Even though I find most of his ideas to be bizarre and totally misinformed I still like the way they talk about stuff. I never said I was going to stop listening. I like him as well and find his show pretty entertaining. It's just I hate when he talks politics and the past two episodes(which is like 1/4 of the shows I've listened to) have dealt with a lot of left/right politics and he just strikes me as a... "meatheady" person. Plus it's such a dumb insult I regret using it. I mean our definitions are probably completely different.

Yeah I honestly did not intend to make it that long but your response is perfectly ironic considering the pint was that you should make an attempt to listen to what people have to say. But the even deeper point was that you should pay more to the intent. So you received and agreed with at least 50% of the point and only read about 50% of the point. I'm going to chalk that up to a 100%

So cool we've (you and ElCondemn) been able to accomplish the goal coming together based on the larger idea. Thats good enough for me! I sort of agree with your opinion on his political discourse but I dont think he's ever been able to develop a detailed opinion other than "they are all the same and choices are artificial" Which as it turns out is mostly true but a worthless claim if you aren't able to back it up.

EDIT: In some strange form of kismet If you Rogan listeners recall back in the day and still currently Monsanto is a company Joe has had major issues with. I dont think he's ever explicitly stated the source of the information he has on them. I've found the source on accident as I picked a movie on Netflix to fall asleep to and It's called The Future Of Food and is currently available in HD. I'm thoroughly disgusted and its been on for 15 minutes. If you're into losing hope for the future of humanity because of a documentary you dont get a second opinion on, this is a goodie!
