I need help in seeing a doctor with no insurance for my girlfriend.

She has no health insurance - her parents do not have any either. She is own her own and has no job to pay for a doctor. She constantly has stomach pains, her jaw hurts a lot, and various other health issues. She is on birth control and I'm not sure if that affects her health conditions.

I want to take her to a doctor that will do a quality full check up on her that won't put me in debt unless I have to. What can I do? I have no understanding of the process about how to get her to a doctor so any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

You can go to http://211.org/ to find local programs to help the uninsured. There are usually a few low-income clinics that base their rates on how much your girlfriend makes per month/year. In my area of California, sexual health (i.e. gynecologist/birth control) are completely free if youre under a certain income threshold. There also may be state based insurance for people who are without insurance and lack the funding to pay for a doctor. The requirements are usually extremely strict and will take a couple of weeks (to a couple of months) to apply and get approved/denied.

My roommate went on a trip last week and after getting back last night, stayed at a friend's house. Found out that the friend has cockroaches.... BAD. What should we do with her stuff (suitcase of clothes mostly) to make sure we aren't going to be having our own problem in a couple months? This is in Pennsylvania, and I don't know specifically what kind they are.

Washing it should be fine. As long as there's no actual roaches that she brings back, you're fine. Roaches are not like bed bugs in that the egg clusters are everywhere. So yes, wash the clothes and shake out the suitcases outside and you're fine.

E: And some roach traps around the kitchen area never hurt anyone. I don't have roaches, but I always keep these around because I don't know if my neighbors may have them.

Lo and behold last night I received a text message at 5AM from someone trying to recover my Gmail password. I also tried to log on to USAA to pay an insurance bill only to find that account was restricted. That may have been because I screwed up the password once, but I don't think it is that sensitive. Anyways, how should I go about handling this? Has anyone run into something similar?

I'd contact your insurance company via phone (i.e. not online) to find out about your account.

But the rest of it just sounds like phishing to me, the Internet's Evil Twin's business-as-usual. As long as you're not giving them any info, just ignore it and delete it.

Gmail password phishing has been going on for a long time.

There are steps you take if you suspect that someone already is using your identity (Social Security number, Driver's License, birth certificate, etc.), but there's no way to report or forestall simple phishing, nothing you can do about it. It's like the Nigerian mail scam, just part of the scenery.

Has anyone been a police volunteer, specifically in the UK, it's something I've always been interested in but I'm not sure what you'll actually be doing, I'm not too bothered if all I'm going to be doing is walking round and paperwork.

The only information that I could find on the webpage (for my county at least) was very vague and just used terms like "serving the community" etc. I'd prefer to be something more than just a Community Support Officer, but I'm not sure how far "in the action" I would be able to get without having the training.

Traffic support was really what I was looking at but I know that the police have to do an advanced driving course, so I'm not sure if I could be anything more than a ride along?

Even though I'm in the U.S, I'd be very, very surprised if police allowed civilian volunteers to "ride along" at all, for a whole host of very large and important legal reasons (e.g. what happens if your PV Buddy for the day screws up your arrest and thus your chain of evidence? What if your PV Buddy gets in the line of fire and gets killed and his heirs sue the police? etc. ) Cops, like members of the military, do not generally encourage civilians to join them on the front lines.

Here is a list of some sample UK Police Volunteers duties.

http://www.npia.police.uk/en/9819.htm

quote:

Examples of established roles include:

* Front-counter assistance (Providing a triage system in busy central stations / Opening police offices/community points/one-stop shops in rural areas, residential areas, towns, etc)
* Providing administrative support to officers and staff, including filing, photocopying, typing, inputting data onto crime systems, etc
* Assisting with crime prevention and community safety initiatives
* Recording and storing lost and found property
* Providing specialist skills, eg language, computer and IT skills
* Helping with PR and media work, including sending out press releases, taking photographs, etc
* Supporting Watch Schemes and liaising with specific sections of the community, eg pubs, shops and businesses
* Website design
* Gardening - providing a welcoming and attractive environment
* Assisting with Special Constabulary and Volunteer Cadet schemes
* Supporting criminal justice units by improving service delivery to victims and witnesses
* Specialist roles (Forensic accountants - accountants volunteering on complex fraud cases, analysing information and acting as advisers / Management consultants - advising senior management teams on business management and best practice)

Notice how none of them involve being on the actual front lines, so to speak. They are all behind-the-scenes administrative-type stuff. The closest you could get would be the front-desk triage job, or being the person with the front-door key to open up the tiny local cop shop every morning.

So yeah, it's *all* "walking around and paperwork".

I'm not sure what you mean by "traffic support". If you mean clerking and collecting the fines, I'm pretty sure that court officials do that, not volunteers; again, for legal reasons.

If ya wanna be "in the action" and do the for-real cop stuff, ya gotta BE a cop.

Not as volunteers, but you do know that a lot of agencies allow and even encourage civilians to do ride-alongs with on-duty cops? I think our police department allows one every six months or year, I can't remember which.

That's what I was fearing, traffic support is what we call pretty much anything to do with vehicles (as far as I'm aware) it ranges from pursuits to speed fines etc.

Pretty much anything to do with guns is dealt with by Armed response, but I guess the threat is always there so I see your point, but I'm not training to be in the police as a profession when it's just something I want to try.

But thanks for the help anyway, I must have been looking too specific when I looked for volunteer information.

I'm guessing it varies wildly depending on departments but ride-alongs are definitely allowed, a buddy of mine does them all the time. They're not going to let you storm a drug house with them or walk around a murder scene though. I thought about trying it out but I guess they're generally pretty boring.

Just a heads up that if it's from someone you don't know well you might want to double check that is isn't a scam (the check may be fake - the bank will accept it, you ship the goods, and then a week later your bank calls you and tells you the check was fraudulent).

Yeah, I'm familiar with those, but those didn't sound like what he was looking for, those are specifically "for tourists only" so to speak. They're occasional events organized to happen during a low-risk patrol, and they aren't, like, a regular thing, as in, "I'm a Police Volunteer and every Tuesday and Thursday I ride along and help the cops". The ridealongs are implemented for accountability to the taxpayers ("See? We let you ride along occasionally so you can see we aren't abusing our privilege and you can see what you're getting for your tax dollars"), not for actual, like, assistance to the cops in the patrol car, which, again, is what it sounded like he was looking for.

Last Christmas I got a gift debit card thing with 30$ on it. Went online, registered it, and then bought various items online. I threw it in the trash when I exhausted its value. It was pretty easy and useful. Are there "gift debit cards" out there that I can buy, exhaust their value with, and then toss out afterwards? I'd like to make purchases online, and if I'm questioning authenticity of the site, I can put that card number in there not having to worry about anything.

Yeah, you can get a "Visa Gift Card" in most grocery stores, I think. They're banking on you using up most of the money, and then tossing the card with like $1.73 left on it, because it's too much of a hassle to use two cards to complete a transaction. I know I've got two or three of those laying around my apartment with <$2.50 on them...

The best thing you could do is go in at a quiet time and talk to the police at your local station. They will know better than anyone what the community support officers get up to in your local area and you can see if these are really people you'd get along with and want to put up with in your spare time.

I lived in London and the community support guys were pretty involved in general policing. A lot of what they did appeared similar to 'bobbies on the beat' of old. Helping old people, tourists, shopkeepers, being a reasurring physical police presence, dealing with gobby youfs and hobos. Not at lot of admin, but lots of hanging around outside in the cold though.

Based on my own experience with the boxes of games that you get at garage sales, no, there is no way to remove the tape from the paper without also removing the top layer of paper, because the adhesive from the tape has basically glued itself to the top layer of paper, and it's practically impossible to un-glue something from paper without damaging the top layer of paper. However, I have seen in my time that extreme age and dryness will cause tape adhesive to crumble as it loses its grip and the plastic part of the tape to age and crumble as it loses its plasticizers and then fall away. However, this invariably leaves a mark on the paper where the tape was. I have no idea how you'd simulate "age and dryness" at home, though.

A quick check of eBay shows that vintage Monopoly games from the 1930s are going for about $30 to $80. I don't believe you have anything particularly collectible or special there, sorry.

If it was mint, i.e. still pristine, i.e. not having been through the thrift store mill, i.e. in better shape than "pretty good", you could contact some kind of professional museum-type conservator. But as it is, knowing what a "pretty good condition" Monopoly game looks like and is going for on eBay, I wouldn't bother.

My credit card month (Discover and Citicard Visa) also starts on the 19th; I receive the bills usually on the 22nd through 30th; on the bills it always says, "Late fee after" usually about the 14th to 16th of the next month, so I just go ahead and pay on the 1st, never had a problem.

Or just call them. Why do you have to pay yours on the 16th? Is that a Chase thing? Discover and Citicard give me about 3 weeks.
