Basically since you clearly DO NOT know what you want or even what to expect from the genre why don't you just take it all in and actively listen? That way you can come to a truly informed decision as to what you consider good and what you dont instead of whatever ignorant uninformed conclusion you've already come to. At worst you steel some music you wouldn't have bought anyway then delete. At best you actually find something you enjoy that sheds new light on what you consider just guns and money.

I never post in this thread but I wanna say that I'm doing exactly this because I don't know anything about rap and it's pretty rad! I just read through and when someone says something is awesome I make a point of listening to it a couple times, and it's pretty much the best way to learn poo poo. Thanks for being a good thread, NMD Rap Thread.

Listened to big krit and yelawolf for the first time today. The big krit tape was his newest and it kinda just sounded like ugk (I get the feeling this was intentional though), but hey that's not anbad thing at all. The beats had a serious pimp c vibe, and the bun features didn't help. Yelawolf kicked my rear end though, no idea why I slept on him.

I'm a big Krit fan but Last King 2 is just kind of eh. It's just a compilation of previously released but under-the-radar stuff I think and most of it isn't really exciting, most of it feels like him on autopilot.

His Def Jam debut album's still coming out next month, I'm looking forward to that.

It sounds like you're talking about his Last King 2 tape; have you listened to Return of 4Eva or Krit Wuz Here? Those albums are both great

Yelawolf definitely has some good joints and is a fantastic live performer but he's also put out some material of pretty questionable quality, especially lately, and I don't really have great hopes that his "real" major label debut will top Trunk Muzik and really doubt anything as good as Pop The Trunk will be on there

God damnit this is my worry almost exactly, except I don't think Pop the Trunk is even the best track, I guess it is the one with the most gravity though because it's what everyone seems to, well, gravitate towards. But shame on who ever is telling him this Lil Jon joint is going to pop off. Maybe I'm wrong (I hope!) but I don't think it will, i feel it just isn't catchy enough to do what he wants it to do.

I saw him do a 15 minute set at the Apache Cafe in Atlanta back in 2008. He had a live band which included a black teenage kid playing the fiddle/violin. I wish that he would bring that back.

automatic gun for fast, continuous firing
Yeah so I went to Rock the Bells this weekend and it was really cool, definitely go if you have the chance. Here's my Rap Report on it, the formatting is kinda weird but I couldn't think of a better way to do it:

Black Star didn't show up, which sucked, but I still got to see a bunch of dudes.

Ghostface, Raekwon, and Cappdonna were good, but I don't think Cappadonna needed to be out there- too many really distinct voices at once. Supernatural also came out and did a freestyle with the names of all the songs they did, it was cool. The Genius was great, and Killah Priest was a really good hypeman and he did his song from Liquid Swords too. Masta Killa and Ghost did a freestyle with those guys too. The RZA was wandering around too, and he ended up selling Wu-Tang chess sets for 200 dollars and getting free weed from the crowd.

Black Moon was incredible, they jumped all over the speakers and ran around in front of the crowd. Buckshot is really good at freestyling, which I did not know. I even got to high-five 5ft cause I was in the front and have long-rear end arms, it was pretty sweet. They are also tiny, tiny dudes.

Mobb Deep was really good too, Shook Ones was incredible with 1500 other people yelling the lyrics and Ron Artest wandering around the stage. ([url]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHVt8opG-68[Sound quality is awful, but you can see Ron Ron dancing around and I'm in there somewhere!) They also had Ras Kass, Too Short, and some other guy I couldn't see from my spot show up for a guest spot, which was cool.

KRIT was really cool except for the retarded bros dancing in front of me and my friend for the entire set, those guys were dumb.

Common was probably the biggest surprise for me, I'm not a big fan of his at all but he puts on a really good show and DJ Dummy is sick.

Curren$y broke his foot somehow and Doom flaked out again.

I saw him live a year ago and his show was great. He played gently caress You, Daddy's Lambo, Pop the Trunk, Trunk Muzik and some others I forget. He definitely can rap live just as good and fast as on his records. Trunk Muzik was the fastest live rapping I've ever heard and the crowd all loved him even though he was opening for B.O.B. who everyone actually went to see (and who ended up disappointing everyone).
