Yeah, I got an e-mail about that this morning and got really excited I've seen them twice, once at the House of Blues here in New Orleans in 2008, and then once last year at Voodoo Fest. They were still enjoyable to watch at Voodoo Fest, but they weren't half as awesome as they were at the HoB. They're coming back to the House of Blues for this tour, and playing potentially more older stuff than when they played in '08 there, so that's gonna rule.

I wasn't impressed with it much at all when it first came out, but after seeing them play some of the songs from it live and listening to the album more and more, I like it now. For some reason, it just didn't hit me right away as being awesome like every other album of theirs has. Don't get me wrong, it's definitely their worst release. But it's got some tracks that are super enjoyable to listen to, like My Time, Summer Angel, Secret Country, Hold Me Down, Into The Mirror and Animal Backwards. There are a few tracks on that album that I wouldn't be too broken up about if I never heard again, though.

New hella track. http://pitchfork.com/forkcast/16177-yubacore/ Got to say, they are one band who hates sounding the same cd after cd. I really like the direction of this new one though, the two released tracks so far have blown me away. 20 more days! New Giraffes? Giraffes! and Hella cd in the same month. What more could you ask for? Harminoff fucked around with this message at 06:11 on Aug 10, 2011 |

I haven't even heard the whole album yet and it's killer. Between this and Tera Melos' "Patagonian Rats" it has been a good year for math rock already. Still no release date for Giraffes? Giraffes! :[ Oh and btw, Mutiny on the Bounty are just about done with their new album. From their Facebook: "We're officialy done with the recording, tomorrow we keep going with the mix for a whole week. It sounds already killer like that, add a couple of good reverbs, compressor, tons of work and magic tricks from mister Bayles and it will sound magic " They're recording with Matt Bayles who has produced records from the bands Botch, Minus the Bear, The Fall Of Troy, Mastodon, Russian Circles etc... So it's looking like this record will have a seriously good sound to it.\ For those unfamiliar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMQ2pSBHjWE

So it's looking like this record will have a seriously good sound to it.\ Just thought I'd add that he played keyboard for Minus The Bear up until Menos El Oso and probably was largely responsible for forming the band, given he worked as a producer for both Botch and Sharks Keep Moving just before they broke up and members went on to join MTB. Trivia aside, I just wanted to thank everyone in this thread for largely introducing me to my favorite genre of music. Unfortunately, I don't have much to contribute, but I can try and shoehorn in a couple of bands. Octis or Ocrilim is the moniker for Mick Barr, the guitarist of the previously mentioned Orthrelm. Although it's normally classified as avant garde or experimental metal, I feel that it fits the spirit of this thread perfectly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_FQ1xGgq_hI&feature=related He also did a pretty cool collaboration with Zach Hill (drummer of Hella/Bygones.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZfARY-Bn7o Chavez is a band I have seen labeled as math rock quite often, although I don't really agree with that label. In any case, it's loud, obtrusive, and wonderful in every way and you should definitely check them out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evahRENlIXw&feature=related

So I remember hearing about the band Loom somewhere in NMD, I don't think it was in this thread because it was years ago. Anyway, their album Angler was posted and I ended up getting it and basically the album was very straightforward "blah" mathrock, plus they had a violinist, which pretty much took center stage on the whole album (example). I was really not impressed and kinda set it aside/forgot about it. I was just looking for youtubes of Loom to recommend them to someone who was looking for "orchestral" mathrock and noticed they had more music now. It's actually pretty great; they got much heavier and they almost sound like Cinemechanica, which is cool. Have a listen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mreK5zVtD9g So basically if anyone wrote them off like I did give them another shot

The Number Twelve Looks Like You has a secret to tell everyone when they get 1000 Twitter followers. I am so loving excited at the mere possibility of this band regrouping. They're one of the shining stars of modern heavy music in my eyes, and they broke up just as their music was reaching new heights. I was gonna post this in the metalcore thread, but most of those people have horrible taste and #12 is definitely more math- even if they're heavy as poo poo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2s21tO6M5gU

All of these bands save Friends have broken up. These four artists are beyond incredible and honestly blow everything else out of the water. As in, peace out Pink Magic (I haven't even really listened to it yet) and Gloss Drop. Do yourself a favor and get this stuff or email me if you need help.

I'm extremely excited for their new album. Their singer left the band to start a family, which is cool with me because he was the weakest part of the band for me. The replacement they got is the lead singer from a band called Pennines who is totally awesome. Everyone should give them a listen if you haven't. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D04JZnosDOw This has me so freakin' excited

Everyone check out Morkobot! Dark, sludgy, groovy and overall pretty experimental Italian math-something. Myspace or LastFM, whichever you prefer. If you're not into songs that go past the ten minute mark (like their older stuff) then check out their new album, Morbo, which is more like this

I searched the thread and didn't see Blakfish mentioned yet. They were friends with and on the same label as bands like Colour and Tubelord, and like most of those bands they've already broken up. I think they're probably my favourite band in the genre even though I generally don't like hardcore music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YREocBCLxYo The 3 remaining members who didn't suddenly quit mid-tour formed another band, &U&I: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T88EPLPs3HQ

Oh man, that trailer song sounds so loving great. It sounds like a cross between the older Menos El Oso/Planet Of Ice era stuff and the newer Omni type material, which is gonna be loving incredible if true. I didn't really care for Omni at all at first, but that album has seriously grown on me. I dig most of the tracks on it now. And if the whole new album is like that one song in the trailer, it's gonna blow Omni away.

I was a bit late on the Minus the Bear bandwagon (discovered them shortly before the release of OMNI) and this preview is just driving me nuts. Also, seeing them perform Highly Refined Pirates in its entirety was just about the greatest thing.
