I am looking for a WRX for about 8k Cdn. There is one locally for 8500. 02 wagon, 250k km (150 miles), just had timing belt.

Seems expensive to me, but if I look anywhere in the Northwest US, prices are about the same, and I have to pay 8 % duty and have it inspected.

What should I look for? Is there a buying guide somewhere?
Is there some location that has cheap WRX's (with no rust) that I fly to and I will get a better deal than 8k - 8% - flight+fuel (5-6K)?

Im not in a rush to get a car, but my fiance doesn't like me driving around in my free truck that blasts her car with oil smoke every morning. She is paying for it so she can decide if I need to get a car or not.

That is expensive. I've seen 02 WRX wagons going for $1000 less with less mileage here in Southern Alberta.

See if you can negotiate with the seller, though it might be worth it if the t-belt service included tensioners, idlers, waterpump, etc.

What needs to be done to an 02 WRX 5 speed to make it worth having/building?
One with a blown second gear has come across craigslist and I am thinking about picking it up and building it up. I was under the impression that as long as youre making 300WHP or less it was just 1st and 2nd gear you should be concerned with. True/false?

depends on the year of your wrx. In about 04 all the 5-speeds got a better gearset which is basically the JDM STi stuff. So if you have an 02-03 it's an upgrade. If you have an 05+ it's not.

I'm pretty sure mine is the updated version since it came with a torx drain plug.

I get most of my aftermarket OEM replacement stuff from rock auto or I make advance auto parts price match them. Google for the 5% off coupon. I cant remember the OEM place but I think its subaru genuine parts.

Also FWIW I really like my stop tech pads and rotors on my 02 WRX.

Sometimes when I'm at a red light or stop sign and I put the car into first, I feel a clunk from the rear. Is this normal, or is it something that needs to be checked out?

Love that stuff. I'm not sure about the LGT, but filling the rear diff and transmission is ~5-6 liters. That's maybe 3-4 fluid changes.

I am going to be driving in an autocross event tomorrow, first one with my new car. I know a few years back they had people that would walk around and write down VINs for Subaru. This is a local club, but who knows they could still be there.

So my question is, besides the drivers side bottom of the windscreen are there any other VIN locations visible from the outside of the car? 2011 STi.

An unrelated question: Is a Haynes manual good for these cars or is there another preferred service manual I can buy?

Thanks.

If you have no other options Haynes is passable. You can get the Subaru Factory Service Manual in digital form and they are awesome. I got one on eBay and print out what I need in a plastic binder. I also bring my laptop just in case to access everything. Definitely find a Subaru FSM.

Body is from a 2004 2.5 TS wagon. Car has a rebuilt title, and I am in Ontario. My area has a number of subaru specialists, and the swap was performed by one of them so I believe that the swap was done right

Here is a listing of what was put into the car during the rebuild, from the guy who rebuilt it:
Both front air bags (Momo wheel), air bag control unit and front seat belts and front sensors were replaced
Dash was changed out to WRX black with all door cards
Front and rear WRX seats
Gauge pod
Complete ( all the way to rear of car ) wireing harness was swaped out to WRX
GC8 aluminium lower control arms
v7 inverted struts and springs all around
4 pot front, 2 pot rear brakes
R 180 rear diff with big knuckles
GC8 STi axles all around0
JDM v7 sti power train 2.0 L
JDM factory down pipe with cat
STi reat muffler
WRX center pipe
Engine ECU re-flashed to remove 180 KPH speed limiter
18" Spec B wheels and tires
Extra waist spoiler on hatch
ST1 side skirts
STi fog covers and side bolsters
STi hood scoop
STi carbon fiber tie bar
Adjustable blow off valve (this will be coming out if i do buy i

I looked at the vehicle, it drives very well and is in excellent shape. Is going to need 8 tires and brake pads within the next year, IMO.

For anyone who is knowledgeable, what should a vehicle like this sell for? How much hurt would I be in for if I were to buy this? I have some mechanical knowledge and want to learn more but would likely take it to local specialists for something complicated.

I bought it. Love the poo poo out of this car.

That's still 3-4 years of changes. In my line of work, open oil is waste oil and even new oil should be filtered. Of course, I'm not going to throw it away but I won't be using 4 year old opened oil. Too paranoid.

On a silly note, what are the oil pans made of? I changed my oil for the first time recently and have a slow leak from the drain plug. Coming from a decade with VWs and aluminum oil pans I've never had a plug leak. Granted the crush washers are brass and not that silly hollow aluminum Subaru gave me, but really. Is my prior torqueing paranoia biting me in the rear end here? Going to do the transmission/diff Sunday at work and will break out the stahlwille torque sticks to figure out how off my calibrated hand is.

That's a fair point. It's such a shame the only way to get the Extra-S is an a mini drum. It does have a resealable cap that may or may not be adequate. I have a drum in my garage now, what about transferring it to airtight containers and storing it that way? I had some leftover Motul Gear 300 that had been opened but resealed for a few months. I called Motul and they told me it wouldn't be an issue but it was so long ago I don't remember the details. I recall gear oil not being as delicate as other oils as far as using open containers?

Not behind them. They sent us two blocks in a row that were completely hosed due to improper machine work. The guy doing the work hosed up and took out a huge chunk of the deck where the oil passage to the head goes. So we put it all together, started it up, and discovered a geyser of oil shooting out between the block and head. We also had some issues with their honing work.

Peformance Developments is one of the few places in Socal I feel like I can trust anymore but they're expensive. Valley Machine would be another.

For other regions...
Bay area - LIC Motorsports, GST Motorsports
PNW - Maxwell Power
Midwest - AMS, TIC, or P&L
SE - Top Speed or Forged
and I don't really know many places on the east coast.

Sorry if this has been asked before but what do you guys think of the new 2012 Impreza? I've been looking into replacing my old 4Runner and I thought I'd go with a new compact sedan. The thing is I'm looking to maximize my features within that segment so I don't end up with a boring car that I'll be stuck with for many years later.

I'm holding off on the new 2012 Focus to see what the 2012 Impreza can offer. However I'm not holding my breath since it seems compared to other cars in its class the base Impreza has always been a pretty mediocre car compared to it's WRX STI sibling. The bland interior and cheap styling of older Subarus has always gotten in the way of me buying one but it looks like the new Impreza might give me the best of both worlds. I don't trust Ford with a direct injection engine when the Germans haven't been able to get it right for so long so I'm willing to take the power hit for a 148hp boxer engine, mechanical reliability and an AWD system.
