The Meters, The Ohio Players, Rasputin's Stash, and Slave are all pretty sweet, as is, of course Funkadelic (Maggot Brain is my favorite album, but might not be as "soulful" as you want). i also highly recommend checking out The Last Poets' Delights of the Garden, which is full of socially-conscious proto-rap, not to mention a pretty funky release for them.

For Parliament start off with the Mothership Connection and Funkentelechy vs the Placebo Syndrome, their most popular tracks are on those two. Other than that here's some random funk: Cameo (first couple of albums are great, the 80s albums are good just probably not what you want) Zapp (get the first three, just do it, three of the funkiest loving pieces of music recorded) The J.B.'s (James Browns backing band, has a bunch of parliament members before the p-funk. Mostly instrumental) O'bryan (mainly just the song Lovelight, but all his songs were written by Don Cornelius the host of Soul Train. The music video is ) BT Express (disco funk) Instant Funk (more disco funk, but way more memorable) Willie Hutch (more soul than funk but it's great fuckin poo poo, get the Mack soundtrack) Early Prince Compilations are cool too, second best way to find cool poo poo you'd never hear of, besides digging for 7"s and 12"s

Like, not just regular chiptunes, and I can't really explain it well, but all MS-DOS music as some kind of certain quality to it, I imagine with how it was synthesized by SoundBlaster. Stuff like this and this. I love Alexander Brandon since all his songs have kind of retained their MS-DOS roots, but I was wondering if anyone else does anything like that these days. I'm not quite sure that this is your answer, but Max Tundra is absolutely amazing and I've always felt that he has a strong "MS-DOS/Amiga" vibe underpinning his music rather than what you'd call "chiptune," which implies a more C64 vibe. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKX87YfaAgE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TToBhI1bJjc

Roy Ayers is one of my favorite musicians, and just in case you haven't heard it, here is one of his songs that is often overlooked stateside (i think in the uk it's something of an underground club classic) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPNWM98Eko0 As for stuff like Roy Ayers, if you don't mind listening to mixes without tracklists or separated tracks, I highly recommend roctakon's good life mix http://knyew.blogspot.com/2009/03/mixtape-mondays-dj-roctakon.html Here are a few other songs that I feel you might like in the 70s rnb vein. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48CWDlNlYfY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fY9fLHwZ-1U http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwRp3CkJpGc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNuCYzqiuBk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dmX2uhQrZs Another useful resource would be the mastercuts jazz funk series, as those songs were played contemporaneously with roy ayers classics like everyone loves the sunshine and runnin' in uk clubs during the 70s and 80s. http://www.discogs.com/Various-Classic-Jazz-Funk-Mastercuts-Volume-1/release/388697 If you like hip hop Roy Ayers was constantly sampled in the 90s (and still to this day to a lesser extent) by the likes of Pete Rock and other east coast producers. If you go to the-breaks.com you can find out many of the songs that have sampled Roy Ayers. For example check out this mix http://smokingsection.uproxx.com/TSS/2009/07/dj-d-madness-folks-get-brown-in-the-sunshine-mix

I'm not entirely sure what they want to say with the album, do they want to make indie rock or krautrock worship or what, it kind of lacks focus. Still has some really good songs in it though If you like it, you might want to check their first EP out too, it's called Inner Sunshine.

This is kinda odd but I recently went to the Shambhala Music Festival and kinda discovered that I love a certain style of electronic music, I just don't know what kind since there are 10 billion subgenres and it's kinda difficult to wade through them all. I think it's either dnb or dubstep but there's a certain style to it that I can't get over. To provide an example, from about 45 seconds to about 3 minutes in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yI6otAnjj-Q&playnext=1&list=PLA100A294A4257B09 makes me erect. I really like what I assume is the tempo from the dnb and the dark sound of dubstep. So: A) Am I correct in naming the genres? B) Who are some artists that do this kind of dark and fast thing? I looked through some popular dubstep artists and found I love Excision, kinda like Flux Pavillion and dislike Skrillex (or at least what I've heard) if that helps.

Two requests: 1) I like bands like The Rocket Summer, Relient K, Fun, The Morning Light, Steel Train.... bands that write and play their own music, but are more towards the pop side of rock music. I DON'T like the nasaly emo voice or processed voices. Just fun rock pop music. Someone has suggested Mumford and Sons but aside from "Little Lion Man" they seem a little mellow. 2) I moved to Detroit and will be working with inner city kids. I know NOTHING about rap/hip hop but it's a genre that I've been wanting to get to know. Same as above, I prefer artists who write their own music/lyrics. I like originality. I know that's vague, or odd, but I'm very unfamiliar with this genre. Basically though, I want to become familiar with it to the point that I can say, "hey, you should check out ____" to one of my kids and they think I know my poo poo. e: P.S. I'm totally cool with female rappers too. In fact, I'd LOVE to check some out if you have any suggestions. anaaki fucked around with this message at 21:29 on Aug 26, 2011 |
