DX1 talk, I finally got a smartphone so I went and figured out how to extract sounds from the game's files and then found the datalink noise, which I'm now using as my notification sound.

I got really confused when it went off while I was playing HR though

Well the game takes place in 2027, at which point Morgan Everett is still running the show and Bob Page is supposed to be his apprentice. DXHR shows their relationship as being the exact opposite which just doesn't make sense at all.

I think you're overthinking it. Him telling Morgan that he should probably do a thing does not equal AH YES, BOB PAGE IS THE MASTER HERE.

It's a lot more than that but I'd rather not go into a big discussion of where DXHR screws up in the DX thread when I really came here to ask if anyone had installed the new New Visions pack that came out while the thread was closed, and if so, what they thought about it. So, uh, did anyone install the new New Visions pack and what do you think of it?

So seeing as Human Revolution is clearly doing well sales wise, I'm wondering what the chances of them making a HD remake of Deus Ex 1 are. The best we're going to get these days is New Vision and a high-res Gunther.

I wonder what gameplay changes, if any, they would make.

On second thoughts maybe they should just leave it the hell alone.

Although they could add some of the cut stuff! Like going to the moon... :allears:

I think it's more likely that they'll just make a brand new Deus Ex game set between DXHR and the first game. I'm trying to think of big ambitious 3d games that have had a straight up remake and I'm just completely drawing a blank. Tomb Raider?

Well stuff like Metal Gear Soild, Shadow of the Colossus and Halo 1 are getting full remakes, so it just seems like the in-thing at the moment.

There's Star Fox too. Ocarina of Time just came out. I'm just saying there's a trend at the moment.

MG:S Twin Snakes counts I guess!

I installed the new New Vision pack, played liberty island for the millionth time, didn't really notice much difference. Had a lot of fun again though! DX rules.

Not sure about the rest, but Twin Snakes had quite a few game mechanic changes: http://metalgear.wikia.com/wiki/Metal_Gear_Solid:_The_Twin_Snakes#Differences

The one I distinctly remember is first-person view so you can shoot out cameras, but it looks like there were actually a ton of things that went into the remake to make it play better.

Tomb Raider, Devil May Cry, XCOM. The latest Medal of Honor and Castlevania games were meant to be something of a reboot. It seems to be the newest emerging trend at the past E3.

There's still quite a bit of story they could tell before looking at remaking the first game. The moon and space stations mentioned throughout the games, the arctic stations, maybe seeing the civil war in the US. Deus Ex always had such a rich world, I would love to see more of the side/background stuff you hear about happening through newspapers and idle NPC chatter.

All the others had entirely new engines with changed gameplay. SOTC is more that they gave it a new texture pack and increased the quality of certain effects.

Twin Snakes is essentially an entirely new game for example with MGS2-based gameplay.

I guess I'd prefer that over major gameplay changes. Bug fixes I'd like.

Yeah they should just remake Deus Ex + Shifter, increasing the graphics quality and adding some of the cut areas. Perfect.

Say what you want about how awesome DX1 is as a game, the combat is really clunky. DXHR made it too much focused on stealth IMO, but in the original you're either a weakling who can't hit poo poo, or a monster killing rooms of trained agents in seconds. The AI is dumb, the melee combat too simplistic, and some weapons just break the game (silenced sniper, hello).

If it was to be remade I would love to see some jedi-knight esque melee mechanics, and something like the takedowns of HR. Agressive flanking and seeking cover should be high on the AI's list of things to do, instead of just running toward JC to get owned by a shotgun blast in the face.
The active hacking of DX:HR is also a big improvement IMO.

I mean, DX1 is great, love to play it even today (even without mods it's still fantastic), but all combat-related things are just weak and easily exploitable.

I've finished Invisible War for the first time!

Man, I really don't like how any of the characters look, but JC and Paul look particularly bad. After finishing it, I have to say. It wasn't nearly as bad as I expected it to be, but I really hope it's considered non-cannon and Deus Ex 4 takes place after Deus Ex.

As I recall, the issue with this was the maps weren't changed about and the AI wasn't much better either. It became a simply a much, much easier of the PSX game just by virtue of first person shooting and being able to hang off things.

With human revolution out, I've decided to finally get around to knocking Deus-Ex off my backlog.

There are a few links in the OP that don't work any more (the fixer) but is that needed with the steam version?

I tried to set this all up when I first bought it on sale over summer, but found that whatever "fix" I was told to install simply broke the installation and prevented the game from launching.

Right now the only thing I have installed is the default steam version.

You just need the fixer but the website for that seems to be down. There's that New Vision mod if you want to look at updated textures and I'd save Shifter for a subsequent playthrough.

The game is fantastically playable in Vanilla, all you need is the launcher for your first time so it runs in a modern resolution. If (when) you replay it then you can fiddle around with Shifter or Biomod but those are mostly just fun tweaks for people who have already played it.

Dunno what is up with kentie's site, but you really want his replacement exe and D3D10 renderer. You should also install Biomod because it makes the game a lot more balanced and a little more accessible.

Play vanilla + the fixer for the first playthrough. You WILL want to play it again, so then you play with shifter/biomod the 2nd time.

Replacement exe, that's what I did. I'm sure I replaced it and then the game just wouldn't launch any more.

The DX10 renderer is far from necessary, and you can forgo the fixer .exe with a little manual tweaking. After running the game for the first time, and picking your video options, you'll have to change the default resolution in the .ini file. After that, just be sure that each time you start playing you alt tab out, open up the task manager, find Deus Ex under the Processes tab, right click and choose "Set Affinity", then uncheck all but one processor.

Also, don't install Biomod. There's no reason to go loving around with a game (any game) before you even try playing it vanilla.

Ok, I'm on a fresh install of the game now, intending to play through with Biomod (I've played with Shifter before and liked it quite a bit) and I wanted to launch the game once to ensure everything was in the right place.

But for some reason, the game will only play in windowed mode. I feel like in the past I have used the updated exe from the kentie site but uh, that website is down and I don't have those files.

Running in compatibility mode for XP, thought that would change something but nothing. Any help?

I tried to use it and the DX10 renderer on the Steam version but it immediately crashes to desktop on launch, couldn't figure out why from all their bug forums, but I wasn't the only one with that problem.

Frankly I was kind of appalled that they didn't redo ANY of the character textures... I mean come on, there's only like 40 or so of them in the whole game anyway, would it really have been that hard to do? With the DX10 renderer you wouldn't even need to redo models or animations to make them look quite a bit better.
