Looks like one of those cheapo chinese sportbikes. Probably 2-stroke and less than 100cc, which could make it cool in the right hands.

The guy finally emailed me back. He said that there wasn't even a brand on it, and that the motor needs a rebuild. Pass.

We've got a Hyosung dealer here in town and the guy that runs the shop acts like they are Ducati's. From what I've heard the 650(600?) model has an older SV650 engine in it, and the owner says he races one very successfully. He kept trying to get me to trade in my R1 and buy a 600. I had no interest at all but I've always wondered what's the word on these bikes? I see a lot of them used in my area, the cruiser version looks pretty drat nice but would it just be asking for trouble?

I see a lot of them used in my area, the cruiser version looks pretty drat nice but would it just be asking for trouble? I wish I would've screencapped the kid selling one here in town. The loving right clip-on was broken completely off and he tied it on with like a piece of rubber tubing or something. I have no idea how it stayed there and he was totally nonchalant in the ad about it. It also had mismatched bodywork (I'm not sure how since barely anyone owns them) and some kind of aftermarket exhaust most likely shoehorned on so it sounded totally awesome to him. This about sums up Hyosung owners. I can believe they're older sv650 motors. Low grade companies like that tend to buy the materials / machinery off bigger brands when it wears out of spec. The bikes are "comparable" in the sense that the best ones the company makes are probably still wildly out of what a big name company would consider "in spec". I mean, it's not a big deal to have your piston diameter measured +/- 0.5mm right?

Hyosungs seem like a bit of junk now, but if the company keeps afloat and suckers keep buying them, they could grow into a decent manufacturer. Don't get in on the ground floor tho. I believe Marv compared them to Hyundai and I could see that being the case. In the mid 90s Hyundai was a joke, by the early 2000s they were making decent cars, and now people don't think twice about buying one. nsaP fucked around with this message at 17:46 on Aug 17, 2011 |

I still love my Shadow, but I've been eyeing Craigslist for something more standard or sportier than my cruiser. http://denver.craigslist.org/mcy/2551779615.html Diamond in the rough? Or a potential headache from the long time it's sat / low miles and possible lack of being broken in? I don't know much about GS500s, but I hear them recommended as great starter bikes pretty often.

republic posted:I still love my Shadow, but I've been eyeing Craigslist for something more standard or sportier than my cruiser. I'd offer around 1800-1900 and see if he bites. It probably needs a carb cleaning and basic maintenance. The guy has probably ridden it enough to break it in - I doubt it's really going to hurt that motor to be honest. Worst case you can sell it again and almost assuredly get your money back. Doubly so if you get it running well.

You're probably going to have to replace some things too, rubber lines and brake lines will dry and crack with sitting. I'd eye it real good and try to get him to take off what you're going to have to do to it. Pop the gas tank and check it too, there's a good chance it's full of rust. You'll have to clean that, and check the lines and filter for rust moving thru. Pretty much every maintenance item is going to need some attention even tho it has low miles. That said it could still be a good buy, you just have to be aware of work it'll need to get it running well. I'm not sure how it's lack of break in will affect engine life tho, maybe someone with more knowledge can chime in. Edit: Just noticed he replaced a heavily clogged fuel filter...yeah...probably rusted tank. nsaP fucked around with this message at 01:13 on Aug 18, 2011 |

Low mileage isn't a selling point with motorcycles, it's better to have regular usage over a period of time, especially for a known good engine (like the GS500). Off the top of my head, you're gonna want to change all of the fluids (oil, brake, fork, shock), as well as fork seals. You're also going to need new tires, a chain, and it does sound like the tank is rusted, so figure $50-100 for supplies for that plus your time, and when all of this was said and done, you'd still have a 9 year old GS500.

Oddball bikes like that hit a sort of weird pricing gap. M For awhile there was a Yamaha GTS down here for sale for under 2k, that started at 4.5k and slowly worked it's way down. I'd keep an eye on it and see how long the ad hangs around unless you have to have it.

Ziploc posted:The talk about the declining health and the consideration for a sidecar bike trade was very . The ad is a great example of what you should look for, and it really can't be faked. They're easy to spot because sincerity is so rare in this marketplace. The sale is almost a secondary consideration--it's more like they're conducting interviews to select the next custodian. There's typically so little left to the imagination and so much value add that negotiation becomes tacky. These are the people you want to deal with if you're considering a 1,000-mile fly and ride and need to be in your cube Monday morning and not flipping through two year old Us magazines at Jed's Garage in Podunk, Alabama.

It's also getting pretty close to the end of the season here in Oregon. Should I wait until next spring?

Eh, I'd probably want to pay closer to $2000-$2100 for that, but I'm a cheap bastard. Waiting until next spring just means you'll be paying more, because riding season is starting. Fall/Winter is the best time to buy.
