I traded an old AW-4 and the parts to install it to another guy whose girlfriend was 3-pedal retarded and wanted to drive his jeep. It came out of a 95 XJ.

Honestly though, you can pull one out of any 6cyl standard XJ at the junkyard that doesn't have a pukegoat, I believe 87 or 89 is when they started using the AX15 instead? I believe the flywheel and pilot bearing are the same but not sure. The best vehicles for donors are going to be 93 or 95 and later (I forget) XJs for the AX15 since it'll be an external slave model, and if you luck out and find an 00 or 01 XJ you can pull an NV3550 out of it which is even better. If you have 4wd and get the trans from a 91 or later XJ/MJ you'll want to swap the input gear from a 91 through 94.0 NP231 into your NP231, or equivalently, bolt in any 91-95 NP231, since these have the newer 23 spline input gear needed to match the newer trans.

I *think* I got all the year splits right, could be wrong. The RENIX fans over on NAXJA probably know more.

EDIT: there is also something different about the trans crossmember and mount between pukegoat and AX15. Grab the trans crossmember and mount/exhaust bracket whojingy when you pull the trans out of the donor. Might also have to swap to a different clutch master since internal and external slaves have different fluid flow requirements iirc.

I wave at mil jeeps, CJs, most wranglers (sometimes I dont wave to unbuilt JKs), built up cherokees and some others like broncs. Most wave back.

I find it also depends where I'm at. The postal courier in my area drives a plain-jane JK unlimited with a hardtop and always waves but sometimes when I'm in town around the mall, I'll see people in JKs that make eye contact and have plenty of time to wave back but just stare at me like I'm an idiot.

Should have just got bigger tires. An I6 patriot doesn't really have that much better MPGs than a wrangler does it?

That's a bunch of great info. I've looked into it casually before and it looked doable, but I'll research it deeply before pulling parts at the junkyard. It's not like the Jeep is my daily driver, so if it turns into a big project no big deal.

The general rule of thumb is for the less-capable vehicle to initiate the wave. Usually, however, that meant the newer vehicle, however the newer wranglers are pretty good out of the box, so that kinda skews things a bit.

I'll wave in my Cherokee, and I sometimes get waves back - mainly because I have body damage that proves I do drive it, I think.

pitman arm is fine, so are the TREs on the linkage from that to the idler arm on the frame and the TREs on the linkage from the idler arm to the driver side steering knuckle. I'm reasonably certain it's because the 5/8" rivets holding the steering box bracket to the frame are slightly stretched and my front tires were badly scalloped (tread down to 0 on the outside, still about 3/4" deep on the inside) and somehow one of the monkeys at the govliquidation lot managed to bend the 2" solid tie rod when they unloaded it... just haven't found time to fix it yet.

I really hope I don't have to change the kingpins in this beast, because the tire/wheel weigh about 300-350lbs, the brake drum is over 100, and the knuckle is at least 100... and I nearly broke my 3 ton hydro jack last time I changed a tire on it.

Do you know how I learned to strip down an engine and rebuild it?

By doing it because I had no other choice.

Don't worry, just plan for some unexpected hang-ups, and ask for help when they happen, and you'll get it together no sweat.

Yeah, there's only one way to learn. I helped my father build is new mustang 5.0 motor this summer and got it all down conceptually.

More of making GBS threads myself spending all this money on parts and machine work and am terrified of loving it up. Thankfully the 4.0 is PlaySkools my first motor so it shouldn't be too bad. I'll be more relieved when it's all buttoned up and running.

I'm going to put the back seats back into the Jeep for the 1000+km road trip I'm doing on Thursday. I'm going up north to far-North Queensland and will be meeting a couple of friends there. We're going to use my car to do some offroading.

My question is, how do you stop the back seat from swinging/bouncing forward when it's folded up, as it will be on the way North when I'm by myself? Just strap it somehow?

Do you have it up because you need the space? If not, just leave it down. The only other way I can think of would be to pack something in behind it or use straps.

I guess I don't NEED the space. I will have an esky and a bag with clothes and my camera case but that's probably about it. I think my brain was just automatically going "no one in back seat = back seat up" but that's stupid.

I'm planning on checking out a 1990 Cherokee (don't know what package) this Sunday. It's got a poo poo ton of miles on the body, but is apparently rust-free and has a clean interior, which is supported by photographic evidence. It also has had a new engine put in it, a dent in the rear passenger door and a leak in the fuel rail. I don't know if it's one of those heat-shrunk hard plastic lines, an O-ring on the injector or what. Anyway, it's got the 4.0 and auto trans, if that makes a difference.

What should I watch out for? And for $1,000 is it worth it?

I recently rented a 2011 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 which I drove from Michigan to Massachusetts. I liked it - roomy, quiet and fairly comfy even in basic rental fleet trim. Never did check what engine it had (Pentastar V6 I assume?), so I'm not sure if its gigantic gas tank simply tricked me into thinking that it had decent gas mileage or if that really was the case (we had 4 people in the car plus a trunk crammed full of stuff). Acceleration from a standstill was really sluggish, but once you got up to speed overtaking wasn't much of a problem.

One minor detail that I thought was especially nice for endless highway cruising was the fact that you can get your speed shown digitally on that little display between the speedometer and the tach. Just a little thing, I know, but it helps you set the cruise control just right. It also tells you which direction you're driving in, which I thought was kinda neat since it helps a bit with navigation even if you don't have GPS device with you.

Normally I don't care much for SUV's, but I wouldn't mind owning one. Looks decent too.

So I checked out that 1990 Cherokee today. The tires are in surprisingly decent condition and have about 50-60% left, which is more than I expected. It started okay and had decent belts. Best part? No rust or Bondo, not to mention a pretty good condition interior. Apparently, the seller's dad will replace the bad O-ring on the fuel rail. Cool, one less thing I have to do.

Things wrong/missing:
- Ceiling console doesn't do anything, but the lights do work
- Needs some new coolant hoses and a flush, stat
- Burns oil and makes a bit of smoke
- Needs a new A/C condenser
- Exhaust is rattly as hell and needs a muffler/straight pipe/something
- Missing a spare tire
- Needs an alignment (read: steering wheel is really cock-eyed)
- Will get fresh engine/tranny oil
- Driver side passenger door is missing thumb button for door/can't open and rear passenger side door has a cosmetic dent, but still opens
- Paint's faded a bit
- Brakes should be bled

Kind of a knit picky list but overall, not bad considering they were asking for $1,000 and I talked them down to $800 with the fixed fuel rail leak. Couldn't pass it up for that much. I've never really had a beater worth beating, but I think I might've found just that in this Jeep. Should be fun! :clint:
