There was a bunch of people talking about them on the last page or so. I have no idea the type of stuff they play on tour, especially since I think they debut a lot of new stuff and do tour exclusive poo poo.

Also if not Atmosphere, who were you looking to check out on the Rhymesayers tour?

The Real is Back 1/2 really make me wonder just wtf 103 will sound like. Will it be Trap or Die/TM101 Jeezy or his new rap style he started doing for Inspiration/Recession. Even though I think he hasn't put out a bad album yet these two mixtapes sound nothing like Trap or Die 2 which was a classic.

Plies is suffering from doing too much too fast. Idk why he keeps putting all this poo poo out when it sounds so lazy and he's barely getting buzz in the first place.

What do I call the kind of stuff that Gucci does? I'm in an argument with someone at work that says Gucci is awesome and he flows like a mofo. I play him Das Efx, Lupe, Royce or whatever and he just calls me old. I'm fine with him liking Gucci, I just want to go, no this is "so and so" and this is "mad loving flow."

Either way, what do I call the stuff he does? I want a name to search for while I do research.

Ok, I lied the boy does not appreciate flow and I want to shove his face in it. I've played him all sorts of things, and it's getting to the point where I really do think I'm just old.

thats bullshit tho, his output hasnt been on the same level but its defo not a case of the same song over + over again. infact on another forum i check some dude was saying its hard to tell what tm103 is gonna sound like cause hes came with so many different sounds since his last album.

Gucci does have flow. It the way he ties the words together more so than the words themselves. All rappers have it but most are either boring or biting someone else. Gucci is entertaining in the small doses I've taken him.

FWIW that's so far my second-fav album of the year behind XXX. I get kinda a Lupe vibe from him (from his first and second albums mostly) (also that's not an insult, as at least to me Lupe was/is pretty good at combining really good lyricism and the actual ability to make listenable songs about soapbox poo poo or even just regular stuff).

If you liked that you might wanna check out some of the other dudes in Black Hippie, although they're not nearly as good in my opinion.

Game's got the low-down on gays with gats:

quote:

"Game don't have a problem with gay people," said the rapper, before qualifying, "Game has a problem with people that are pretending not to be gay and are gay because the number one issue with that is that you could be fooling somebody and you could give them AIDS and they can die and so that in the closet poo poo is real scary. So, we've got to get into the real seriousness of it and it's just not fair to other people -- If you gay, just say you gay. Be gay and be proud."

ehhhh i don't think the issue is the content so much as style (arguably over substance i guess). Royce can flow, sure, but he's primarily a punchline rapper. really Das EFX is probably the closest of those that he listed and they go a lot slower than Gucci when he's at his peak

Jay-z fans.

I agree with the second half of your post in that its probable that no ones mind is gonna change but I'm a huge nerd who loves arguing about rap so I would say try and figure out what dude considers good flow bc there's a lot of potential criteria to make that distinction

Hmm...Jay-Z fans just might be close. Although tbh I've not actually met many diehard Jay-Z fans (I'll never quit saying he's the Eagles of rap).

And for the second part, I'd argue it too but even I know that sometimes you'll hit a base level where you just have to agree to disagree and no amount of argument is likely to do anything.

The reason he was aping mobb music is because Master P actually lived in the the Bay area for a while in the 90s (in Richmond, I believe) before he got famous, and he used to make music here. Eventually he moved back to New Orleans and brought the Bay Area sound and hustle with him (independent labels, selling tapes from the trunk of your car, etc), and got rich off of it.

Here's an early 90s track he was on with a bunch of SF rappers, back during his Bay Area days (third verse):

so i just read that Mos Def is retiring the name "Mos Def" after 2011 and going to call himself/record as/make movies as(?) "Yasiin" which is all fine and dandy or whatever, for me anyways, people loving hate change so I try to play the other side of that and embrace it (just in day to day life, give it a shot) but I do feel like cause Mos Def is easily one of the best names in hip-hop.

i dunno if anyone in this thread gives a gently caress about anything other than trap music anymore but i just thought this was interesting. he talks about having built a career with the Mos Def brand and no longer wanting to feel like there is such a difference in who/what he knows himself as and what people refer to him as but if thats the case why have I never heard the name Yasiin before, being a pretty big Mos fan?

also theres some line of thought about prince changing his name to a symbol and jordan wearing the 45 and tying this all together into a 'who the gently caress does anyone think they are' rant but i lost that while i was looking for my original CMONSON emote so gently caress ya life

You cant recall the album Black On Both Sides and eagerly anticipate the return of Eve and you're making judgement calls on "casual rap listeners". How quaint.

I had not heard anything about the name change though...Is it strictly as he says it is, or is there some sort of record company issue there like it was with prince? I know he was having some serious issues with his label that resulted in the nonsense that was his previous release so I'm wondering if thats the real issue here? He's usually pretty forthcoming but still it seems weird.

Doubt it's label stuff, True Magic (which was better than people gave it credit for) was his last album on Geffen (iirc) and that's why it was half-assed. This sounds like more Mos Def nonsense. Dude can rap his rear end off but I can't remember hearing him speak any other time that wasn't at least mildly cringe-worthy.

And yeah, all his solo stuff came after Black Star so don't know what dudes going on about. At the very least he's pretty dug in with the same crowd that digs Stones Throw and that type of stuff. He's also been in movies and was nominated for an Emmy, so it's not like he's exactly obscure at this point.

I guess we can chalk this all up to Mos being a little weirder than we thought, but then there's a video of him doing Madvillain's "Accordion" in a shiney feathery mardi gras style mask so I can't tell if that is contrary to that point or just helps reinforce it

Mathematics is still one of my fave Primo beats.

But yeah I guess he's trying to distance himself from the late-90s NYC boom-bap slang connotations of Mos Def? I admit I'm not terribly familiar with his recent stuff (I downloaded a few of the promo tracks for The Ecstatic maybe I don't really remember) but I seem to have the idea that he's more or less completely moved on musically from where he was at in the Rawkus days
