Justifiably Mad!
I have a feeling there is going to be a subplot to try to get the rest of the craziness out of Jack, because he seriously went from pretty well-composed to slightly loony in these last few pages.

It depends on how you look at it. Coyote is a god with a sense of humor. In reality, that would be the most terrifying thing. But since it's not real, he's hilarious.

Nah. I get the feeling he was just holding back until he got her reaction, and now that he knows there's nothing at stake/no need to let her down, he can be more open.

Some guys like their women crazy and difficult. Granted Zimmy takes that to a whole new (homicidal) level, but still.

Besides, Jack always struck me as a little bit 'off' but maybe either hiding it better, or just made a little more intensely strange after his run in with Zimmy. She didn't break anything that wasn't already at least a little cracked.

Coyote's cool, but he's an archetypal trickster. As far as I can tell there isn't too much else to him - which is great, I love trickster characters - but I find the characters with more unpredictable moral substance to them more interesting. And more relatable, I suppose.

I guess what I'm saying is that I could get my fill of coyote from real world folklore if I wanted to, but Mort and Jack are all Tom's. They're fun to get to know.

Eh, I think it's one of the most awesome depictions of a trickster nonetheless.

Of course, a lot of that has probably to do with the beautiful design...

Yeah it kinda feels like she's grasping at anything to regain some ground. I'm wondering if she actually did like him and is now just pissed it's all blowing up in her face.

That or she really is the most emotionally stunted person in the world.

That's exactly what I thought it was.

Jack is being nice and gentlemanly. Annie has a kinda denied crush on Jack and likes the attention. Jack keeps playing into it. Annie tries to flirt and essentially gives him the all clear that he can be himself. Jack does, and thought Annie was leading him on to mess with him, says he doesn't know why. Annie tries to regain footing, pulls out stuff from when he was not well. Jack is confused because he is a bumpkin.

I'm tired, this may be incoherent.

But it seems like Jack is implying Annie planned this whole shtick? Meeting in secret, acting flirty, and when the time is right, drop the "I don't like you" bomb. Which implies a really nasty manipulative side that plays a long, long game.

Which is odd, since Annie is very much emotionally stunted (witness: first days of school after forest), and that doesn't seem to play into someone being able to manipulate emotions like that.

I'm starting to wonder what exactly the forest did for her. Maybe gave her the courage and vitriol to start trying these games.

I feel weird talking about the feelings of adolescent girls. I suppose its Tom's success at making believable, well rounded characters.

Edit: Looking back, it looks like Annie picked up a willfull streak that Kat is uncomfortable with.

Yeah, I just read through the comic in the last few days and one thing that's stuck with me is that Annie has a pretty nasty side to her. When she feels wronged she doesn't just lash back, she actively enjoys making the other person suffer. I could very easily see her becoming a completely awful person.

Here's to the new us.
Its just such a random thing to be upset about, especially there were literally zero consequences for either Annie or Reynard. Neither of them hasn't mentioned it since then and hell, Jack was under the control of the mind spiders, it really wasn't his fault.

So Annie trying to scrabble for ground actually makes her look a lot better, because if she is genuinely trying to string Jack along emotionally over such a small thing, what the gently caress Carver.

Makes me think that near the end of the story we're going to get some traumatic childhood flashback to the moment that caused all of her issues.

If it's her mother's fault, then before.
If it's her father's fault, then after.
But there's definitely something we still haven't seen yet.

E: I mean, poo poo, while it was bad, that probably wasn't as traumatic as we think it was. Certainly better than not being able to say goodbye to your mom.

Let's see: Annie's dad is emotionally distant, blames her for her mother's slow death. Her mom is dead and she was the one who had to escort the soul. Probably leading her to seriously wonder whether her mother went to the elsewhere the other souls go to and if she didn't just, you know, end. She just found out that she's not entirely human. Spent an entire summer with Ysegrem of all people. (who, honestly, is probably one of the more stable influences in her young life.) And, oh yeah, she's 14.

I think the girl has plenty of known reasons to be an emotional mess. And we've known for a while that Annie just doesn't get people. At all. Not even remotely. I mean, hell, for most of her early childhood the people she socialized with were dead the next morning. That's gotta leave a mark.

Annie is in no way normal, but I don't think we need a big reveal to explain all this because the explanation is already there. I think we might have overlooked it because Annie presents it in such a matter of fact way, but really her childhood is all kinds of hosed up.

I don't understand this strip at all. "What was all this?" "You did all this just to get me back" All what? Jack's talking like he's just been the victim of some big organised thing, but all Annie did was turn him down when he showed an interest in her. I feel like I accidentally skipped a page or something.

Well, Tom answered that on Formspring.

I like that Annie has this petty and nasty side that comes out at times. Flaws like that makes her feel much more real and what Jack did to her and Reynadine was pretty damned lovely, so I can understand why she would hold a grudge, even if she knows it's irrational due to it not really being his fault and all.

Also, seeing as this is my first post here and all, I'd like to say to Tom, if you reds this thread, Gunnerkrigg Court really is quite spectacular. One of the absolute best comics I've read, online or not. The closest thing I've read previously, in tone and quality is, I think, Jeff Smith's Bone.
