I'm going to go look at a PSP3000 some guy is selling on craigslist. What should I be looking at in terms of defects or dealbreakers?

Dead pixels, and if you plan to play UMDs, check the drive. Battery life is important too if the guy has a faulty battery, but I don't think there's a way to check that without using a couple hours up.

Analog stick and the buttons on the bottom Home row are probably some of the better buttons to check out. Check if it has a charger/charging port works, if you wanna be through, turn the wireless switch on and meet at a McDonalds or Starbucks and see if you can pick up a wireless signal from there. Sometimes it might have a problem with bringing up the HOME menu if you shake it while playing a game; that's usually due to the switch that gets depressed when a UMD is inserted and the tray is closed. Bring some headphones and test the jack, and the speakers. You totally want to make sure the main buttons/triggers are good, that it reads and writes to a memory stick fine, and that it reads discs. If it can't do any of the above three it's going to be much less useful, save for parts.

He doesn't have a charging cable - any other way to make sure that port works? Edit: This dude tried to sell me a 1. obviously stolen 2. probably broken PSP. How did I know it was probably broken? As I said he had no charging cable and naturally the battery was out of juice. Gotta love craigslist. Bigass Moth fucked around with this message at 16:15 on Sep 6, 2011 |

Once a marine tried trading in a well-beaten PSP over at the local Gamestop, but couldn't because he had no charger, plus the scratches on the screen. I plugged in my multi-system charger into an outlet there, charged up his PSP and tested it out, then gave him forty bucks on the spot for it. A lot of people seem to forget or lose stuff like accessories or chargers when they go to sell their systems. If you pre-emp them by buying a pre-owned PSP car charger or wall adapter at Gamestop you can potentially cover your own rear end by making sure it's not totally DOA. If it is busted, you can at least return the adapter and get your money back. The wall adapter is probably the best idea though, because if you're fiddling with a car adapter and he is a crook he might decide to deck you and jack your car instead of dealing with a broken PSP.

More cool games for cool dudes have gotten price cuts on the PSN in North America today. BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger Portable - WAS $24.99 NOW $9.99 Gladiator Begins - WAS $39.99 NOW $9.99 Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus - WAS $19.99 NOW $9.99 Resistance: Retribution is on sale for $15.99 this week as well. I've been waiting a really long time for Gladiator Begins to drop in price, will definitely pick it up for the PS Vita pile.

Gladiator Begins is a really drat fun old-world RPG/brawler. It's basically a streamlined version of Colosseum: Road to Freedom on PS2 with some caveats like simplified stat gains instead of playing rhythm games between events and an easier way to select gear you've earned after fights instead of running around at the end of combat and grabbing everything you can before the screen fades to black. I've gotten one of the endings and I'm itching to pick it up again to see the others and try out other weapons and skills I didn't use the first time through. The only negative is that I'll have to learn again how to parry attacks effectively before I reach those Egyptian lunatic fighters.

I've been dying to get the full version of Begins, kinda makes me sad that the new PS3 one Vs is going to be some 3-on-3 fantasy medieval thing.

They improved the pacing a lot and instead of giving you predefined characters ask you to create your whole troupe, giving you full control over them; which changes the feeling of the game a lot. That, plus i know a girl who'll really enjoy drawing her own characters and then making relationship charts for them.

I'm guessing the reviews are harping on the cutscenes and the repetitive nature of most of your fights, of which both are true. Once you start getting into the high-ranking fights though you'll get some more exotic match-ups.

I meant HALF-MINUTE Hero, oops. The reviews mostly say the combat is flawed or nothing special. Blocking and countering doesn't work, just mash away.

The later fighters get really drat aggressive with attacks & skills that being able to counter successfully is almost a necessity. Then you can wail on them to your heart's content. Blocking I will say does work, but to a rather limited extent. Equipment can get knocked off if its hit too many times in succession and there's some skills that can get around armor or inflict stun regardless if you're using a shield or not.

I made a bunch of weapons and armor from Phantasy Star Online. The customization in this game is awesome.

There's tonnes of Gladiator Begins free DLC on PSN, but I gather it's only useful if I start a new game eh? Looks like they're different body types I think? edit: Ah not a big deal. Nice to have more to choose from, but nothing making me regret my original choice. The Vivid Beast Woman and Robot ones looks fun. And I guess "Ella" was the controversial Tokyo Game Show one. edit2: So the weapon stats are ATT/DEF/WGT/and value I guess. The stupid digital edition doesn't come with a manual of any kind. I can't figure out why early on the Gladius is worth more than the Novacula though when the Novacula seems to do more damage, be more defensive, and lighter. teethgrinder fucked around with this message at 23:42 on Sep 7, 2011 |

I think weight might affect how hard a weapon/armor is to knock off of someone but don't quote me on that. And yeah, weapons are kind of strangely priced and you'll find a lot of junk early on. The weapons with blue or orange names are the ones you want to keep on hand for combining.

Thanks! The game is a lot deeper than those reviewers gave it credit for. Guess it was just a style that wasn't for them and they didn't have the patience for it. If Loco Roco 1 is still going for $30 on PSN (last time I checked, may have changed) the likelihood is probably... not really.

Yeah, some earlier games seem to have really been overlooked. Locoroco is a case in point. The Wipeout games too. But they may deliberately leave those up to encourage purchases of the new prequel on Vita. Which I hate to say but miiiiiiiight sell me on the system.

Am I correct in thinking that how well you dodge and land blows contributes to how the crowd sees your battle? The reviewers all admitted to just mashing buttons. (And then didn't understand why they were booed.) Something I didn't realise early on is that you can do many events per day as long as you do them in order.

The art first put me off, but honestly, the writing is pretty good and entertaining and the combat is fun, with a few quirks lifting it up from the usual jrpg fare. Definitely worth a few hours.

Pacing can vary (slow start), and sometimes the chapters are hilariously similar, but overall don't regret my time with it (story wise). As far as combat goes, Mithaldu is right, normalish JRPG but with a "materia"/"golden sun djinn" element to it. The random bonuses that popup in the turn order are a nice touch also because it adds a bit of an in-battle strategic element to it. I'd say if you're looking for a solid JRPG and have exhausted a bunch of other known options that its a good one to try next. Overall I was a fan and hope they translate the next two chapters. I love Trails in the Sky. Be warned, though, as the ChiTownEddie said, it's part of a trilogy. If you care about the story at all, like me, you'll have blueballs by the time the game ends. It took me 40 hours to finished the game.
