Agreed. The weapon system is pretty cool, though, and most of the enemies in the games we play in here are strictly bullet sponges, too. I think it looks like a pretty decent game, if you don't go in expecting Deus Ex and Shadowrun... and if you don't have to pay $29.99. I'd probably buy it for $19.99 despite the short play time, but not at $30. I guess that's what Steam sales are for.

Just drag and drop the PK3 file onto gzdoom.exe. The WAD menu on startup only lists IWADs, or stand-alone games like Doom 2 or Heretic.

The quick and dirty way: Drag and drop Brutal Dooms WAD onto your GZDoom EXE.
The longer but cleaner way: Get Quickly Launchering GZDoom from the OP and use that to launch mods in the future.

He's soooo dreamy...

I don't get the hype behind Hard Reset, at least based on the demo. I know the people making it are exciting, but the demo had one of the deadest environments I've seen in a long time, the enemies were dull as hell to fight, you move slowly, the weapons didn't feel particularly interesting...

I mean, I want it to be good, but I've seen a lot of people gushing over it and I just don't see it. It's not on the level of Dreamkiller or anything, but it ain't exactly Painkiller either (and I didn't even care for that one).

If you didn't have fun with Painkiller I just don't know what to say.

I'm about three hours or more into Hard Reset and I think it's loving solid game. The weapons are varied and once you learn what gun works against what enemy you can absolutely wreck everything. It's an action game without all the fluff bullshit that games like Call of Duty are filled with to the brim.

The game itself is short, its solid and i liked the demo but this is the EARLY FPS Megathread, that game has:

-Regenerating shield.
-Slow player movement (in painkiller your could bunnyhop to get insane speed).
-Where is the blood? We need blood.

Im going to get it for sure, but not going to pay more than 15$ for it, specially when Serious Sam: BFE is a month away.

I totally agree with you. Someone mentioned all the detail they put into the environments, but to me it all feels just randomly slapped together. Usually billboards, neon signs etc can be used to great effect to tell the player about the world. Here it tells me absolutely nothing, other than that the devs watched a bunch of cyberpunk poo poo before building the game.

Also agree with Guillermus. Other than bullet sponge enemies (not fun to fight) it has very little in common with early shooters. It's still just the same corridor level design that people poo poo on Call of Duty and other popular games for.

Oh god Vampire Slayer, it was for me and a bunch of friend our gimmick HL mod (as our main were DoD, Frontline Force and Firearms). That mod was hilarious.

Are you going to set up a server or something? Its been a few years and dont know about version and if it would work with HL steam version (I know that The Specialists and Action HL do).

Extraordinary!
Vampire Slayer was such a perfect "fun" mod. The hours I spent crouch-leaping onto the Priest character will always define, to me, the sheer mod innovation of that era. I can still hear that horribly sampled blood-curdling scream, too. I miss the days when mods were created, released, and THEN balanced... it made things a lot more interesting than "TWO EQUAL TEAMS VERSUS EACH OTHER", which is what everything's been reduced to.

Jealous? No? Go frak yourself, Smoothskin...
Early FPS memories:

Doom 1: I first played this as shareware, but it was a modded version. A lot of the sounds, well everything but the music, was replaced by clips from movies. Examples:
- When you opened a door, you hear "Now that is a big door!" from Tron.
- Firing a rocket results in a guy saying "Oh shiiiiiiiiiiiiiit" (no idea on source)
- At the end of a level, someone says "Oh yeah? Well, gently caress you! gently caress you! gently caress you, you piece of poo poo!" (no idea, either)

I probably shouldn't have been playing that version at 9 years old.

Doom 2: Played LAN games at a high school during the summer one week. Deathmatch was great, but co-op always turned into a bloodbath where one guy kept blasting me with a plasma rifle because I accidentally shot him with a pistol.

Quake 1: Totally owned people in deathmatch, especially at LANs where other players would exit my game if I left the computer for a few seconds.

Quake 2: First internet multiplayer experience. I can still remember my first frag: killing someone with a super shotgun as he came around the corner. That was when we had to play on the single player levels and you couldn't see what weapon was in another player's hands.

Sin: This was a Quake 2 engine game released at the same time as Half-Life in 1998. Single player played out like a B-grade action movie. Multiplayer had some great maps, like one where all the players are 3 inches tall and one where you can go on the walls and ceiling.

It had an expansion and a sequel that was supposed to be the start of an episodic series. Piracy sank the studio and they switched to casual games.

Similar for me too. First internet game I ever played was Quake 2 using Heat.Net

I still remember the match. I had no clue what I was doing, but managed to join a deathmatch game with someone named "HoneyGuns"

At the time I believed I was playing against a girl due to the cutesy name.

Years on the internet have taught me much.

I agree with this. Off the top of my head I have HL1, Duke3D and the Doom games so I'd be up for multiplayer in any of those, especially Sven Co-Op for HL1.

I played Brutal Doom yesterday. Loved hitting the "gently caress yourself!" taunt after reducing enemies to a bleeding mess. The only thing I don't like is having to manually aim weapons, especially with the chaingun/assault rifle because of recoil.

Guillermus
Dec 28, 2009

The Assault rifle is your sniper weapon, just tap fire fast, dont need much recoil management. The new chaingun is awesome, original one is just a speed-up pistol wich was kinda boring, while this one is jaw-dropping. I find myself using mostly the pump action shotgun, brutal doom balanced it nicely that is a headshot machine for every small-medium enemy, while i just pop the SS for really tight corridors. You can kill just fine imps and zombies with the pump shotgun at like 150 feet or even more now.

Also, headshots in that game were awesome! I also liked how the enemies would adapt to your play style. Shoot them in the head enough and they would start wearing helmets.

Yeah, while the gore is awesome, the best thing that Brutal Doom does is make sure that even when you've got a BFG and a ton of cells, you'll still be using your 'weakest' weapons as they actually have situational uses.

I don't know about that mouse bug, but I should warn that the penultimate level in Marathon Resurrection is literally impossible to complete without trickjumps or cheats (the jumps at the very end aren't possible to do with Unreal's physics). I'm not sure how that got through, but development stopped after the first release or two so it never got fixed.
