I was always a Democrat growing up, my father voted both ways but for the last 5 or so elections has voted straight Democrat simply because the right to him has just become more and more crazy.

Since then I have started hating America more and more simply because the things my dad has never encountered. Such as dealing with the police, or our lovely health care system, or our terrible prison system.

I think at this point I am more of a progressive anti capitalist with a strong distaste for lovely xenophobic Christians that hide behind Jesus to justify their hate.

I never really got the liberal brain washing college references, because most of my professors I've spoken with, when we hit on politics they describe themselves as conservative and will mention they voted for McCain last election, for instance. Not saying this is the truth everywhere, just where I am so I never got the whole "My teacher is a liberal so I must be a liberal too" vibe at my college.

One of the political science professors I had is good friends with Karl Rove. There were only two professors I had that I knew for certain were Democrats and that's because as an operative I encountered them at several fundraisers my candidates had.

And yet my conservative family members blame my professors as well. Which is funny because I was a Democrat in high school. (A republican in middle school because I was dumb). Now I'm not a democrat. At least, not a mainstream democrat. I'm probably to the left of Bernie Sanders on some things.

I was a Republican in high school and my first year of college because I was really pro-life, buying the abortion being analogous to slavery thing and whatnot. I also, as a high school freshman whose favorite subject was science and got A's in a family where both parents worked in science, watched Kent Hovind and for some reason totally bought it.
Mom is liberal while admitting to not following politics or the news, dad is conservative, but isn't really vocal about it other than expressing general disgust about Clinton and Obama. He mentioned to Mom once of "Your buddy Michelle Obama inviting this rapper, who sings about killing cops, Common, to the White House," but I couldn't get a word in edgewise after my sister was aghast after dad said he'd still have Bush, who she said she wanted tried for war crimes.
Despite subscribing to those two of the crazier parts of American christian fundamentalist culture, I believed in the social safety net and couldn't understand why anti-gay activists couldn't just live and let live. Still, when you think that an atrocity that rivals the Holocaust in body count is literally happening, other stuff tends to seem less important.

Consequently, when I fantasize that I am not a huge wimp who babbles incoherently and averts eye contact at the first sign of conflict, I want to ask "So abortion rivals the Holocaust in sheer bodycount. You believe it's part of a concerted effort to keep the number of African Americans down. Yet the thing that gets you out of the bed in the morning is is gay marriage and keeping the Bush tax cuts for billionaires? You'll wreck the economy to preserve those tax cuts, but for stopping genocide it's 'Don't do anything drastic, just vote for us every four years until we get enough Supreme Court justices.'"

The idea that Democrats "promote" abortion to keep the number of blacks down is absurd. That demographic votes overwhelmingly overwhelmingly for democrats. It should be the opposite.

Oh, like plausibility or factual basis has had any bearing on the content of these emails we posted, or any of the conservative talking points of the last few years.

True, the only person actually straight-up said that the idea that Democrats wanted to provide welfare so black people would have single-parent families with too many kids, and then provide easy access to abortions so they'd get so zealous they'd accidentally abort themselves to extinction, or something, was "just some idiot on the internet."
But still, people talk about Margaret Sanger's belief in eugenics and putting Planned Parenthood clinics in black neighborhoods as though it had any relevance to what the organizations plans are today. I think Herman Cain is the highest profile person to do this.

The racism in this instance is multi-layered. The way right wing people justify this is by saying blacks are too dumb to notice. They like to do the same thing with liberal Jews who don't agree with endorsing everything the Israeli government does.

Got a question. How do you politely tell someone that supply side economics is a myth?

I'll be watching the rugby game from last night with my friend and her bf this afternoon. This guy is a corporate lawyer, argues that creating a "hospitable business environment"is all that's needed to create jobs and that the state shouldn't pay for retirement benefits because even someone making $30,000 a year can put $100 away ever month for the future (I doubt this guy has ever made $30,000 a year in his life).

He's very polite, not belligerent and my friend is my fiance's cousin, so I don't want to piss anyone off. Should I even bother or just keep my mouth shut?

I think your best bet is to simply say "Let's please not discuss politics." Unless you live with the person, discussing politics with them isn't going to go anywhere. There's just not enough time in a single, social gathering to make an impact.

For reference: I married a Glenn Beck fan, and reason did get through over the course of a year. Arguing with her family at various family functions, however, has just resulted in a gentleman's agreement to not bring up politics around me.

I'd start out by pointing out that in 'the golden age of capitalism' the unemployment rate was 4.8% in the US, 1.2% in France, 1.6% in the UK & 3.1% in Germany. Then ask him whether the unemployment rate was higher during the gilded age (when there was a "hospitable business environment") or lower.

Or better yet, don't discuss politics unless you want an argument.

I have found the following article to be very thorough and convincing in debunking supply-side economics:
The failed experiment -
How misplaced faith in tax cuts and other economic myths are destroying the country
, by David Cay Johnston, a journalist specializing in economics and tax issues.
It also made me very angry. But it should be a good place to start building arguments, if you don't decide to avoid the issue entirely.

Be aware that the response may well boil down to "well, they didn't really implement it properly, it would have worked otherwise," at which point there is not much to go on, anyway. But maybe you can find a way to respond to that, as well.

To answer with my own experience: Two of my professors that I liked the most were both deeply deeply conservative. One went to grad school with John Yoo and ran with that crowd and the other just grew up conservative and never changed. Both of them were PoliSci and both of them were teachers first, opinionated conservatives second. Whenever we had class discussion, which was very often, they were tolerant of any viewpoint no matter how divergent from their own it was only if you could support it with solid logic and facts and such.

Long story short, I always ended up on the opposite viewpoint as they did and ended up constantly having to rigorously defend my positions and the more I did so the more it pushed me to become more and more progressive. When I wrote my term papers in their classes, in the parts that asked for our opinions I was scathingly critical of conservative policies and ideas and I made to sure to heavily source everything I said and they graded the papers based on the quality of the argument, not the content so I passed with solid As. I'm also pretty sure that if they were shown that LF thread they would both find it hilarious for whatever that is worth.

Fake Edit: I don't want to say what school I went to but it is in the bible belt.

Some old ones my mom sent me. Sorry that they're a bit on the long side, but trust me, they make absolutely no sense, so bear with me.

quote:

THE GREEN THING

In the line at the store, the cashier told the older woman that she should
bring her own grocery bag because plastic bags weren't good for the
environment. The woman apologized to him and explained, "We didn't have the
green thing back in my day."

The clerk responded, "That's our problem today. The former generation did
not care enough to save our environment."

He was right, that generation didn't have the green thing in its day.

Back then, they returned their milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles
to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and
sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So
they really were recycled.

But they didn't have the green thing back in that customer's day.

In her day, they walked up stairs, because they didn't have an escalator
in every store and office building. They walked to the grocery store and
didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time they had to go two
blocks.

But she was right. They didn't have the green thing in her day.

Back then, they washed the baby's diapers because they didn't have the
throw-away kind. They dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling
machine burning up 220 volts - wind and solar power really did dry the
clothes.
Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always
brand-new clothing.

But that old lady is right; they didn't have the green thing back in her
day.

Back then, they had one TV, or radio, in the house - not a TV in every
room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief, not a
screen
the size of the state of Montana. In the kitchen, they blended and stirred
by hand because they didn't have electric machines to do everything for
you.
When they packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, they used a wadded
up old newspaper to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap.

Back then, they didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the
lawn. They used a push mower that ran on human power. They exercised by
working so they didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills
that
operate on electricity.

But she's right; they didn't have the green thing back then.

They drank from a fountain when they were thirsty instead of using a cup
or a plastic bottle every time they had a drink of water. They refilled
their writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and they replaced
the
razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just
because the blade got dull.

But they didn't have the green thing back then.

Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to
school or rode the school bus instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour
taxi service. They had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank
of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And they didn't need a
computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles
out in
space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.

But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful the old folks
were just because they didn't have the green thing back then?

I'm not even sure what this is trying to say. :psyduck: BACK IN MY DAY WE DIDN'T DO THINGS HEALTHY FOR THE ENVIRONMENT! WE WERE HEALTHIER BECAUSE WE WERE LESS TECHNOLOGICALLY ADVANCED! :bahgawd:

I never knew all of this about the Flag Draped Coffin and most likely most of you haven't either.....

"The Meaning of the Flag Draped Coffin"

Meaning of Flag Draped Coffin
All Americans should be given this lesson. Those who think that America is an arrogant nation should really reconsider that thought. Our founding fathers used GOD's word and teachings to establish our Great Nation and I think it's high time Americans get re-educated about this Nation's history.

Pass it along and be proud of the country we live in and even more proud of those who serve to protect our 'GOD GIVEN' rights and freedoms.
I hope you take the time to read this ... To understand what the flag draped coffin really means ... Here is how to understand the flag that laid upon it and is surrendered to so many widows and widowers.
Do you know that at military funerals, the 21-gun salute stands for the sum of the numbers in the year 1776?

Have you ever noticed the honor guard pays meticulous attention to correctly folding the United States of America Flag 13 times? You probably thought it was to symbolize the original 13 colonies, but we learn something new every day!
The 1st fold of the flag is a symbol of life.

The 2nd fold is a symbol of the belief in eternal life.

The 3rd fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans departing the ranks who gave a portion of their lives for the defense of the country to attain peace throughout the world.

The 4th fold represents the weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in time of war for His divine guidance.

The 5th fold is a tribute to the country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, 'Our Country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right; but it is still our country, right or wrong.'

The 6th fold is for where people's hearts lie. It is with their heart that they pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America , and the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.
The 7th fold is a tribute to its Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that they protect their country and their flag against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of their republic.

The 8th fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day.

The 9th fold is a tribute to womanhood, and Mothers. For it has been through their faith, their love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great has been molded.
The 10th fold is a tribute to the father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of their country since they were first born.

The 11th fold represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies in the Hebrews eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

The 12th fold represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in the Christians eyes, God the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit.
The 13th fold, or when the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost reminding them of their Nations motto, 'In God We Trust.'

After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington, and the Sailors and Marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones, who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for them the rights, privileges and freedoms they enjoy today.
There are some traditions and ways of doing things that have deep meaning.
In the future, you'll see flags folded and now you will know why.
Share this with the children you love and all others who love what is referred to, the symbol of ' Liberty and Freedom.'
